Re: Canada vs. USA - 2010 U18 and U22 Series
5-4. Was there. Score reported is Correct. Hux was in the building !
Winning goal was scored with about 40 seconds left in the game during a mad scramble in front of the net after a juicy rebound was not cleared out.
Hard luck for the Maple Leaf who had battled back from a 2-1 deficit at the last intermission to take a 3-2 lead on a nice deflection tip in goal.
Earlier in the game, the canucks had a lengthy 5 on 3 PP, on which they failed to convert. IMHO US was better at driving the net, and it netted them at least two of their goals.
Good pace to the game, and either team could have won.
Best play of the game was the US goaler making a fantastic save sometime in the second of a point blank shot from the top of the crease, while she was already down from the initial save on the rush. (Hopefully HUX got a shot of that for posting).
He did indeed, but is resting after the long, whoopie pie free drive. Photos to follow~
You have to watch the games to determine the top players on each team. Lots of other deserving players not on your listing should be mentioned.
Good to see you this morning! Sorry I didn't get over to say goodbye - I had to rush to the parking lot to exchange some NH garden fresh salsa for some freshly picked VT zucchini and summer squash
I agree with your points - both teams had chances to win in each of the three games, but the US squad was very hungry around the net, and their defense corps was solid on D and a huge asset offensively.
The first game was sloppy on both sides - nerves, I presume.
Game 2, IMHO, was the best played game for both teams.
In game 3, the US carried the play initially, maintaining offensive possession for long spurts, but couldn't convert. Canada's squad didn't have a lot of O-zone time, but made the most of it, striking first. As happened in the first two, the US came back quickly. In the third period, despite killing a 1:30 second 5 on 3, the home team looked a little too tight, and took a few "preventable" penalties, which cost them the lead. Phalzer, a diminutive D (just taller than "The Great One", I hear), was the spark plug for several goals, and was stellar on defense. Gritty, not pretty, play around the net won the game.
I didn't hear anyone in the crowd complaining vociferously about any calls, and neither team looked surprised by the officiating. I think the Canadians got penalties when they found themselves a step behind on a play, and the US when they got a little too tense and started to play the body a bit too exuberantly.
One comment: I am at the point where I can hardly stand to read even the threads that I'm interested, because they've been taken over by posters who make the Down with Brown crowd seem welcoming
. It really makes me nostalgic for RStarr
