Canada vs. USA - 2010 U18 and U22 Series

Re: Canada vs. USA - 2010 U18 and U22 Series

Nice to see you guys have rekindled your love affair. :) Get it on!
5-4, the U22 sweep was very convincing. We should be in good shape for a while. This is good competition. We'll see later. ;)

Geee...think the source of that comment could be of any significance? Wouldn't be a source of Canadian heritage by chance? Perish the thought!

Misery loves company. It's good you have company in your misery.

I'm running out of kleenex.

Yeah...you're fond of making that claim. I can say likewise occurs for me virtually everytime I refute any of your bull****.

Keep believing you're special my friend...keep believing. ;)

Was that your super duper colossal final post on the topic then? Hate to keep asking...

Actually Brooky I was finished but then I got cleaning up after the dog in our back yard and thought of you again.;)

Wondering what you thought of the vastly superior American 18's squad's ability to only score 11 goals on 121 shots. Do tell.

Oh man! You really got me with that one didn't you! You surely are just incredibly clever...what a terrific slam! You gonna tell me my mother wears army boots? Maybe now you'll go clean up after your pet monkey and think of me again.

So again...you didn't really "say your piece" back there, 6-8 posts ago.

I think my reppers who frequently use the word "immature" in reference to you are on to something.

I'll leave you with one last comment that came to me via tweet from the Lake PowerPlay arena...

"It appears to me that the entire US refereeing crew has attended the Stacey Livingston School of Officiating."

That's a wrap...
So you're not leaving us, and it's not yet a wrap I'm guessing?

Re: Canada vs. USA - 2010 U18 and U22 Series

The U22 series was an embarrassing display for USA Hockey. In name only was this an exhibition series. Bench shortening actually started at the Lake Placid games. It seems that rather than utilizing the talents of the players they did have, players were played based on their familiarity with the systems that the coaches used.

Decisions were made early as to which systems to use and they were adhered to throughout regardless of their success. With only 8 goals for and 16 goals against, I think the success of said systems speaks for themselves.

And even with the obvious flaws (and more than a week less of practice than the Canadians), the coaches chose to cancel 2 of their practices scheduled in Canada when they could have worked on some of these issues.

The D in particular was very poorly coached. Communication was bad. (They were lucky they only had 1 Too Many Men). For a summer series, some players were grossly overplayed (not being in season shape) and then there were huge letdowns in the 3rd. The PK was way too passive (and CA took full advantage of it last night).

All in all, a very disappointing series to watch.

This is pretty shocking if true. A short bench in Lake Placid when the players were being "evaluated?" Was this part of the USA Hockey playbook or were the coaches so determined to prove their own capabilities that they were prepared to sacrifice all but the chosen few? Either way it reflects poorly on USA Hockey's process and coaching selections. I heard from a friend who watched all three games in Toronto that USA was out-coached in every one - the short bench killed them in game 1, the undisciplined penalties and lack of two-way, defensive play lost game 2, and game 3 was more of the same. What a disappointment for the players who worked so hard to be there.

Read the question. I wasn't there...so I'm gonna have a hard time diagnosing that, so why would I answer that? You want me to make something up? If you weren't there, I'm guessing you can still enlighten us. I guess I could whine about Canada being screwed by officiating...it seems one can do that without witnessing the games.

I do appreciate your kind "vastly superior" assessment. I'll have to take your word for that.

Still haven't "said your piece" I gather?

Yup, this retort along with the army boots and the pet monkey suggestions, pretty well flanges things up for me...why don't you and your "reppers" take the rest of the day off....;)

It's important to me that things be flanged up for you...I am relieved.

Can't speak for my reppers, but I'm gonna take the rest of the day off, despite my typical complete disregard for your unceasing propensity to give forum members "commands" as if you actually believe they give a **** about what you think they should do...;)

Thanks for bringing us back to hockey :) Your friend's assessment from the games was spot-on.

I am also struggling with the purpose of these games. It wasn't just the D that sat, I counted at least 4 F's that had greatly reduced playing time.

Either USAHockey did a poor job of selecting these players (but how can you determine that if they didn't play) or the coaches took the lazy way out and stuck with the "chosen" ones, but either way, it seemed like a wasted expense for bringing these 22 players to Lake Placid/Toronto. (And don't even get me started on how much these players gave up over the summer to prepare for this "opportunity".)

And what really gets me is you can't even say this strategy worked. They only won one game (against the U18s) and that was after allowing 4 goals to be scored on them.

Interesting contrast of coaching philosophies; Canada seemed to roll both lines and defenders throughout the series. US actually shortened their bench; especially the D. They had eight D on roster and essentially only played four and sometimes five. Could be one reason CA seemed to dominate third period each game.

Seriously, if the coach has such trouble counting to 8, then she should have not dressed two of the defensemen each game. That would have been preferably to being dressed and getting only one or two 20-second shifts each game.

Let me get this right, the bench was "shortened" at Lake Placid? Wasn't that the evaluation process for the U22 series?

From my discussions with several parents and seeing it myself, isn't playing with a short bench what the Americans have always done? I watched the U18 series last year in Calgary and seen atleast one US player on the ice for three shifts in that series!

Uhhm.....All these players are heading back to college, so they would and should be working out/preparing for hockey anyways....In other words...They only gave up their time to attend the camps/series...Considering the opportunity not that much of a sacrifice....In addition attending the camp benefits players with preparation for their season...Being named on the team adds to your resume, playing time or not, and you get to network with the who is who in the hockey world......Long story short, see a lot more positives than negatives, even if you are a small time role player.

Would be interesting to hear from the essentially non-participating players who spent 10 days in Lake Placid and Toronto watching their teammates play. I doubt very much if they saw much in the way of benefits regarding "adding to their resume" or "networking." I would be willing to bet that not one of these "small-time role players" would say that there were more positives than negatives in this so-called U22 development camp.

And in regards to getting in shape for the upcoming college season; this camp was totally detrimental for them; especially since they cancelled two practices and there were no provisions made for the non-players to work on conditioning. It was essentially a forced break from both hockey and conditioning.

I would also bet that had these players known how little they would be used, none would have accepted the invitation to spend time on the bench watching their teammates play. They came to play not watch.

You make some good points, but consider this....

All of these players are "Big time Role Players" on their respective club teams. Thats is all most of them have ever known. Now as a smaller fish in a smaller tank with all big sharks, they have to adjust to being a ""small-time role player". I bet you that some have more trouble adjusting to that concept than others. While many may not see the benefit TODAY, they will realize it down the road, for some soon, for others years later. This is how the real world works as well. They should be honoured to be named to the U22 team, and I bet you that all of them will use it on their resume.

I leave you with these sayings...
.....You sometimes need to learn from your failures before you can succeed.
.....Nothing ventured is nothing gained

Jim Fetter, the most under-rated coach in college hockey, bar none!

To put him up against Digit Murphy, at the U22, was almost unfair......
