Canada vs. USA - 2010 U18 and U22 Series

All of these players are "Big time Role Players" on their respective club teams. Thats is all most of them have ever known. Now as a smaller fish in a smaller tank with all big sharks, they have to adjust to being a ""small-time role player". I bet you that some have more trouble adjusting to that concept than others. While many may not see the benefit TODAY, they will realize it down the road, for some soon, for others years later. This is how the real world works as well. They should be honoured to be named to the U22 team, and I bet you that all of them will use it on their resume.

Someone help me understand this logic. I think it reflects what happens, but do not understand the reasoning. One would think that the Players on a National team would be something more than "Big Time Role Players". Why invite someone on a National Team that you do not plan to play?? Is the skill disparity across a National Team that great??? Does the play at that level still allow top players to skate every other shift and perform at peak performance???

FWIW, the "real world" does not work that way. No company would pay someone to work there (pay expenses) and not expect them to contribute to the bottom line (play the game).

Hard to say what the disparity of skill was in this event, as far as the players who didn't see the ice. However, one of the D was All-WCHA last year and another D led her WCHA team by a wide margin in icetime per game. They probably would have held their own if given the chance.

Why don't you research Augustine's Law and Pareto Analysis, and then tell me how a standard distribution in the real world typically works.

Sorry if my post was not statistically significant. What I should have said was that in my experience at all the companies I have worked at, we've never paid anyone to watch others work and for the privilege of wearing the company logo on their shirt.

Anyone remotely interested in statistics also understands that 1 to 2 data points do not constitute a trend. My point was that given that there wasn't a week of practice/games activities, there was no indication as to how each of these players would do.

As with other aspects of the series, decisions were made in haste and without basis.

Re: Canada vs. USA - 2010 U18 and U22 Series

talked to a couple of the U-22 girls and they are still exhausted from three games that one of them said felt like they played 10 games instead of three...

Re: Canada vs. USA - 2010 U18 and U22 Series

We'll assume you were talking with a couple of the American girls then....:)

One US, one Canadian...

Both said the series was grueling to play in despite the results and a good training session for the upcoming season...

The US player was one that I assume saw a lot of time considering her current status in the US system and the Canadian received what she refereed to as a regular shift.

both sides of the equation and the same reaction of tiredness all around..

I would hope the experience for both made them improve and show them their weaknesses so they are both ready to go when the college season rolls around.

Re: Canada vs. USA - 2010 U18 and U22 Series

I leave you with these sayings...
.....You sometimes need to learn from your failures before you can succeed.
.....Nothing ventured is nothing gained

Your sayings would be more purposeful if they were directed at the US coaches. I’m not sure what the players are suppose to learn from, not playing means they weren’t even given the chance to fail.

These players were selected to play on a US national team but were given unarguably the worst division one coach currently coaching in the NCAA. Clearly US hockey didn't see winning as a top priority or they would have picked some one else for the job. The pathetic thing is the coach couldn’t even simply play everyone so that they could be evaluated. Good job proving yourself coaching, talk about your all time backfires.

Re: Canada vs. USA - 2010 U18 and U22 Series

I've talked to some coaches over the last few years, and I find this bench management issue is all over the map with US National teams....

This year plenty of complaints about too short a bench at U22.

There’s a time and place for playing a short bench. A festival is not one of them.

Moral of the story. No matter what a coach does, some find a reason to complain about it. Unless you were in the room, or part of the coaching/evaluation staff, you have NO IDEA on the objective of the program U22 program just completed, or the instructions from USA hockey to the coacvhing staff. I'm sure those that were in the know are not posting that info on this board.

No matter how brutal a coach is, some find a reason to defend them. You don’t have to be in some room to know that if the US’s top priority was winning then they would have picked a different coach.

P.S....And it was only a matter of time before you would chime in on this coach on this thread. You have made your opinions quite clear in the past.

P.S. And It was only a matter of time before you chimed in to defend your beloved coach, I just held out longer, so I'm only as guilty as yourself. If she ever did something worthy of a compliment, I'd gladly give it to her. Unlike you, who will never question a coach's ability no matter how deserving they may be of criticism.

Obviously, there is some history between a couple of the posters re/ US coach. But the people we were sitting with at Toronto had never heard of any of these coaches; we had no previous bias for or against the coaches.

What we (and the players) expected from the camp at Lake Placid and the Exhibition series was to see all the players perform against arguably (probably unarguably now) the best U22 team in the world. The goal being to determine who the US top players in this age group are.

Perhaps that wasn't the goal of USA hockey; perhaps the coaches were told by USA Hockey to use their best judgement to win these exhibitions; even if it meant using several players very sparingly. If that was the directive, than USA Hockey (IMO) missed the boat on seeing some good players not participate and should definitely share the blame.

If the coaches acted on their own, then blame falls 100% on them. They shortened the bench during the Lake Placid scrimmages ; shortened bench during exhibitions in Toronto; and played only one goalie in Toronto. We had previously been led to believe that Dahm was unable to play; turns out this wasn't true. She was able to play.

Not real sure what this camp and series v Canada accomplished; except maybe that the players who did play for USA are no match for Canada.

I do question coaches decisions at times, but just not on this board.

I'll put up my record on this board against yours any day of the week. You clearly have some sort of axe to grind. 90+ % of your postings have been directed towards this coach or her program, all in a negative fashion. My public record of posting over the last 5 years are much more balanced. Less than 5% of it is directly related to the program you love to tear down.

Re: Canada vs. USA - 2010 U18 and U22 Series

It would be easier to blame the coaching staff if there wasn't already a history of shortening the bench. The question USA hockey has to wrestle with is: is this part of the American Development model you are now touting as the way forward? What kind of example are you setting for all of the youth coaches that are watching?

I agree with your last sentence, but I can tell you that there are a lot of coaches out there already that fall into this category. In boys hockey it's very common, but I don't agree with it. A coach should use their players. After all, they chose them. I hate it even more when some coaches go short all season carrying 11 or 12 players. It's wasted development opportunity at the cost of winning. Most higher level teams shorten the bench if they think they don't have the quality...... I would be interested in finding out the approximate ice time of each player on the U22 American team. Anyone have that information? :)

Re: Canada vs. USA - 2010 U18 and U22 Series

I still don't understand why coaches select a team then basically corrupt it by not playing the players they picked. Why basically screw a players season and development as well as there self image by stringing them along to sit them. If there not wanted cut them at tryouts.
