Canada vs. USA - 2010 U18 and U22 Series

Re: Canada vs. USA - 2010 U18 and U22 Series

agree with your premise, but i do not believe there were tryouts for this exhibition. thought the team was selected based upon past performances. i could be wrong, but the roster was announced during the early summer and was unaware of any tryout festival. should this be accurate that there were no tryouts, your message is even more compelling. why select a player just to have them sit during the games.

Re: Canada vs. USA - 2010 U18 and U22 Series

I heard at the U18's the coaches did not play everyone the first and second game, but then everyone played in the third. At least one D and one F sat (different ones I believe) for the first two games. They didn't get a single shift in the games they sat. So what is the difference. I believe some people really have a grudge against the u22 coach.

Good call Prep...It's obvious to most that the people moaning about the
U22's aren't concerned about the players that didn't play...only concerned about staining the coach.

Re: Canada vs. USA - 2010 U18 and U22 Series

I'm not even addressing the coaching Staff. I think this benching, sitting whatever you want to call it starts back at U16 U19 at least on the women's side. I know its even earlier on the men side . I would think that USA Hockey would want to over stress development on the higher level especially at Summer Camps. We all have seen players that rise to the level needed when given the chance. The players selected must have showed something to someone why deny them the chance to move forward or even play. Makes little or no sense to me . . Roll the lines find out what you have before the international events.

Re: Canada vs. USA - 2010 U18 and U22 Series

Why basically screw a players season and development as well as there self image by stringing them along to sit them. .

Not following your logic. I don't think having to sit on a bench for 2 or 3 games in a one time a year series for U22 would "screw", to use your words, a players season. They probably learn more and are challenged more by being with the U22's than being with their regular team. The pace of the practices, and being on the ice competing with and against the best of your peers is more challenging than being with your club team, where most of these players are stars on their teams.

I do agree that sitting players on a regular basis over a long season can be detrimental to a player, specially in minor hockey, which should all be about development. But lets face facts here. We are talking about college players, not minor hockey.

Players making it to U22 camps should be honoured. Many will realize it only later.

Why don't you read this clip, from a player who did not quite make it....

I have spoken to this young lady, and she took this to heart and learned from it in all the right ways.

You heard wrong! Get your facts straight before you slander a coach who actually has a clue how to run a bench, specifically in an EXHIBITION series!

Sorry to upset you!!!! but I didn't hear wrong - and I'm not slandering any coach. I'm not going to name the names of the girls who did not play in the first or second game because that would be inappropriate. And your right the coach does know how to run a bench because they swept the series.

I just don't understand how a player would feel "honored" by simply making it to the U22 Camp and then not playing; and I have spoken to two of the three defenders who saw less than a total of four minutes playing time during the whole series in Canada. They do not feel honored; they feel cheated by not being able to show their skill in these exhibitions.

The logic of feeling honored is like the JV player who is brought up to the varsity for a game or two and then not seeing any action. The JV player is supposed to feel thrilled by the fact that he/she is actually sitting on the bench with the big team. Have yet to meet a player who is thrilled by this experience. The players in Toronto were not JV level players and were not thrillled by the experience of sitting on the bench watching their teammates play the game.

Would have made more sense to pick twenty players and play them.

I couldn't agree more. If you don't think they can play at that level, don't pick them. If you'd simply prefer to run a shorter bench to give the best players that much more time, simply go with a smaller roster in the first place. Give the others the pre-camp experience alone for their development.

At the risk of over simplifying this... it has been reported here that the American 22's cancelled 2 practices in Canada & as trival as it may seem, if that is true, methinks if you get to the bottom of that issue you will all have the answers to the others. I mean as short a time as these girls had to prepare that's.. well..from a coaching standpoint, absurd.:(

Murphy is on the record on her profile page saying "The biggest thing for me is winning. That's really all I care about right now, and I'll do whatever it takes to make my team (Bears) successful."

Couple that attitude with the fact that whenever 2 teams with the Maple Leaf and the Stars and Stripes on their respective uniforms drop the puck... she ain't no "Festival" or whatever you call it. :)

Re: Canada vs. USA - 2010 U18 and U22 Series

Uhhm.....All these players are heading back to college, so they would and should be working out/preparing for hockey anyways....In other words...They only gave up their time to attend the camps/series...Considering the opportunity not that much of a sacrifice....In addition attending the camp benefits players with preparation for their season...Being named on the team adds to your resume, playing time or not, and you get to network with the who is who in the hockey world......Long story short, see a lot more positives than negatives, even if you are a small time role player.

Obviously this is a great opportunity. No arguments there. But it is also a tremendous sacrifice in other ways beyond the need to train, which of course all players should be doing anyway. The timing the various camps and events often means sigificant missing of school at either end, as well as great difficulty in securing and maintaining a summer job or other summer plans.

Re: Canada vs. USA - 2010 U18 and U22 Series

Without wanting to pile one it seems pretty clear the Digit was not the best choice for this position. She has never had players of this caliber to work with number 1 and definitely never had 20 of them at one time. Digit is generally playing with 10-12 legit D1 players and has little choice but to shorten her bench significantly just to try and compete. Given that the real purpose of the U 22s if to identify and evaluate future talent for the national team this appears to have been a wasted opportunity.

If she brought her Brown game to the U22's, no wonder she lost. :D I don't think she would be that stupid with her experience, but if you're right, it actually fits. :)

As I've been reading this thread those have been my thoughts as well...pretty obvious that her strategy and coaching did not work and at the end of the day she will be judged by the USA's 0-3 record. Doubtful that she will be selected for any other international competitions in the near future.

There was not ONE player that didn't see ice in all three U18 games for team USA. You could not be more incorrect. Just stop.

I am amazed at the amount of blame being placed on Digit. Some of the usual Digit haters are here to pounce as expected, but it seems like Digit is getting the lion's share of the blame here. The players have to take some of the blame in the results of this tournament. Especially game 3. First of all Digit didn't have final say on the roster, that is done by a USA hockey commitee with input from the coaches. Maybe these just aren't the right players?
Sounds like her game time decisions can be seconded guessed. I wasn't at the games so I'll have to defer to the people who were, but this is an annual complaint on this board. USA hockey coaches shortening their bench because they fell behind to the Canadians. Katie Stone was also criticized for the same thing when she coached the U-18's. Maybe a lot more of the criticism should go to the people selecting the players?
Now on the other hand Jodi did a great job! Maybe, maybe not, or was is it all the players doing? Very little is being said about the job Jodi actually did. Why? because they won. Coaches get criticized when a team loses and very little credit when they win. That's the nature of the beast and most coaches like it that way. Jodi is 11,55,3 as a head coach. I guess after this tournament we can expect her team to go out and win the NESCAC. Of course not! I'm not bashing Jodi but she, like Digit, has a tough time recruiting with the academic standards of a NECAC school. I haven't seen any "Does Wesleyan care about women's hockey" threads on this board nor should we.
There are plenty of pieces of the blame pie to go around and maybe Digit deserves a big piece, but not the whole pie.

Ok Digit bashers, lets have it.:)

Hey OnMaa....Was it you that suggested Priceline and Hotwire? Just wanted to tell you that I tried it recently, and it worked like a charm. Saved lots of $. Thanks for the tip...if it was you. :)

I did too, UCONN Fan, but pat yourself on the back. You could almost put a form diatribe together on this topic, MadLibs comes to mind, and just fill in the coach's / team's / official's names where appropriate.

Actually, I can picture a whole MadLibs series apropos of a number of threads that get recycled year after year with a different character list:rolleyes:
