So, he'll be back on the DL on what, Tuesday?

I think that's a little optimistic. There are almost two whole days until Sunday. ;)

Wouldn't it be a nice comeback story if he led the Braves to the postseason? I would only die inside a little bit. OK, actually, a lot.

**** Axford. One strike away...again.

Also, Lucroy headed to Appleton to start rehab assignment soon. Marcum out until "after August" according to Doug Melvin on air tonight.

That was painful. :( Supposedly there is now discussion about switching closers.

Had not heard about Marcum. Did they say what was wrong? I'd be more concerned if Estrada and Fiers hadn't been great in their fill-in roles... but it would be nice to have them available in the bullpen too, since the bullpen has been terrible.

Lots of questions floating around. Nobody seems to know who is going to catch when Luc returns, but that's the least of our worries. And, uh, that whole Greinke thing... kind of odd timing that they sit him right before the trade deadline.

Joey Votto is out 3-4 weeks, so that changes the division picture a bit.

Re: Brewers 2011 - Yo...Marcum for the post-season or jen may get a little Greinke

I realize that a manager walks a tight rope when it comes to closers and their psyche, but Ron-Ron will take some blame at some point if Axford is destroyed (ala Turnbow) by being left in that spot too long. It's not like we don't have another option.

Ron-Ron is making some of the same mistakes as the guys that came before - Starting Marcum against the Cards in the NLCS much like Sveum with Suppan in '08 & sticking with Axford when he clearly needs a break like Nedley with Turnbow.

I just don't see Roenicke as much of an upgrade from what we've had. The Marcum start last year is nearly unforgivable. It was so obvious what was going to happen - to everyone except Ron, apparently.

He certainly sticks with the guys, just look at the Weeks deal. It took him forever to move him down in the line-up when it was clear he was killing the top of the line-up. Also look at the Hart deal. The minute Gamel got hurt, he should have moved Hart to first, and then stuck Aoki in the OF. He had a Japanese batting champ/mvp riding the pine to allow a journeyman Ishikawa to play.

Ax has to be done closing. I like the guy, but every loss that is "preventable" is one more nail in the coffin. They have to win and right now if they any chance to get into the race.

So what's the official scoop on Grenkie missing his next start?

Officially, the scoop is that his routine was thrown out of whack by the 3 straights starts. So they are skipping his next start and he won't have pitched for 9 days before going in Philly. I don't really buy it. I'm not sure how giving a guy 9 days is any sort of routine. That said, Yo had a similar amount of time off and pitched great the other day. I'm a cynic though and I think it's because they're looking to trade him.

Re: Brewers 2011 - Yo...Marcum for the post-season or jen may get a little Greinke

Last thing I read about Marcum said end of July. Maybe Dougie got confused on air when he said "after August". I was surprised when I first heard him say that so I rewound the DVR and it doesn't lie.

Also, Thornburg's propensity for serving up dingers is a tad concerning. I think he's up to 7 now is 11 innings (through 5 today).

Re: Brewers 2011 - Yo...Marcum for the post-season or jen may get a little Greinke

Hey, did you guys know this is a big series? JSOnline told me. :p

<a href="http://www.jsonline.com/sports/brewers/brewers-still-confident-in-axford-ju66097-162970246.html">Axford is not done closing</a>. He's taking a mental rest.

As far as Roenicke sticking with guys - he has to manage people as well as players. I'm going to trust he knows them better than we do, and I enjoy his aggressive style. Definitely like him.

Braun is expected back tonight.

Matchups for the Reds series -

Fri: Estrada vs. Bailey
Sat: Yo vs Arroyo
Sun: Fiers vs Cueto

Re: Brewers 2011 - Yo...Marcum for the post-season or jen may get a little Greinke

Isn't there a 2012 thread?? How lazy have we gotten as fan nation? :-P Anyway, I'm sure I'll get some flak for this, but this is a free country, and I'm entitled to my opinon, dangit. You know what? I say trade Greinke now. Even if he wins every start, that is only 1 win in 5 days. If they can't win more than that, there is no point, and to me it seems like...they can't. I want to stay positive, and I think they can be competetive, but there are just way too many teams to climb over to grab a post season spot. I would rather get something for him, and then hope and pray he liked Milwaukee enough to resign there again in the offseason. Call me pessimistic if you will, but the odds are WAY against the Brewers at this point - dug themselves too big a hole

Well. Game over. Season over. See you next year. Hope they can resign Greinke in the offseason. I will be the first to eat a HHHHHHUUUUUUUGGGGGGGEEEEEEEEEEE plate of crow if they turn it around, but I'm not optimistic. I am still a fan. WIll still go to games, and watch them, because that is what I do. But I say "FIRESALE!" and reap, or attempt to reap, some young prospects to rebuild for the future. Which can be as early as next year. I'm confident of this.

Yeah, they've been essentially treading water for several months now. If this was the make or break stretch and Melvin intimated it was, then it's time to start looking ahead. They just didn't due enough. 2 out of 3 vs Pitt and StL is good, but getting swept by Cincy while scoring 1,2, and 1 runs ain't gonna get it done.

Re: Brewers 2011 - Yo...Marcum for the post-season or jen may get a little Greinke

Yikes. You can't make this **** up. The bullpen must not like Greinke, because they are doing everything they can over the last few weeks (and especially the last two nights) to tell Dougie the season's over. Question for Roenicke: why take out Greinke with only 87 pitches when he'd retired 14 straight and your bullpen is, shall we say, pathetic?

To keep his pitch count down and make Grienke's stock as high as possible.

Is there a worse bullpen in baseball's history? How the * can they be this awful?

*sigh*

Re: Brewers 2011 - Yo...Marcum for the post-season or jen may get a little Greinke

Is Axford going to be closer again since K-rod is blowin saves left and right now?

Re: Brewers 2011 - Yo...Marcum for the post-season or jen may get a little Greinke

Melvin says he's trying to trade Kottaras, to find him a job somewhere and maybe get something for him. I like the move to keep Maldonado.

Roenicke will use closer by committee.

It's 7:30 am and Greinke is still a Brewer. :p Every morning, I expect to wake up and see that he's gone.

Went to the game last night, and the Chef's Table was outstanding. DC TaKorean Food Truck Tangy Chicken Tacos. Best thing I've had at the Chef's Table all season. I hope the stand has done well this year, because it's a really great idea.

Brewers have traded grienke to Angela for Jean Segura (SS) and 2 AA pitchers.
