Re: Boston University Offseason Thread 2: Moving Forward by Booting Forwards

Jeff Wyer??

VJW's had zero to do with Wyer being offered at UNH. Had deal well before he even played for them. Played first game with Warriors on 10/10/2009 and hooked on with UNH back in March or 2009. It was the Reading connection with Doherty etc..

I hate to agree with Hokydad here, but he's right. Coyle played against weaker competition in a low-level league that never produces impact players. All of the better players are in the USHL or NAHL. He would have been better off staying at Thayer.

FYP :p

Re: Boston University Offseason Thread 2: Moving Forward by Booting Forwards

So what other recent BU players came from the EJHL? Gilroy, Higgins...IIRC, Higgins was one of the top scorers in the league, but despite his Beanpot highlight goal and hat trick vs. UNO, he didn't jump in and tear it up right away.

from what I've read, it sounds like Nieto is more likely to contribute from day one.

Also K Gilroy, Gaudet, Rosen and Ruikka.

And I think Gilroy was 21, not just turning 18. He is going to be fine and will be a huge contributor, just not this year.

Toss in Bobby Butler, Brett Tyler and others. The real reason why its so hard to make the jump is that the EJ has no depth. In USHL you are up against top players every shift, every night. You can grab a few names here and there but not top to bottom.
Even Gaudet is an 88 where Coyle is a 92

Here is an example of what USHL is like. This is just two of the teams, total of over 240 last year alone went D 1.

A couple of significant contributors who came to BU via the EJHL were Kevin Schaeffer and Jakabs Redlihs (now with Dynamo Riga). Jason Lawrence spent a season the in the EJHL before going to the NTDP.

FWIW, an NHL scout whose opinion I respect (but, alas, he doesn't bid on jerseys  ) likes both Nieto and Clendening, but thinks Coyle--whom he calls "a 100%-ter who is a hard nosed, skilled competitor"--will be a better player for BU. Will that be from day one? We'll see.

No one is claiming the EJHL is close to the USHL talent-wise. But it has produced more than a few impact players. Besides those noted by other posters, Brian Foster, Kory Falite, Conor Knapp, Paul Thompson, Brian Flynn, Nick Petrecki, Eric Nystrom, and Rob Scuderi.

Still--like that stockbroker disclaimer about "past-performance"--the success of other EJHL players has little to do with how Coyle will do at BU--either immediately or over his career. But it's encouraging to know that Coyle's draft team--San Jose--has made some excellent picks of EJHL players--Ryan Vesce and Doug Murray, both NHLers, and Petrecki who could be there soon, to name a few. So perhaps there is a very good reason why Coyle is the first-ever first rounder from the EJHL.

Coyle's decision to leave Thayer in order to play bigger, older, often-more-skilled competition, and more games worked out well for him and should benefit BU, too. He earned a call-up to the NTDP for an international tournament and became a combine standout and a first-round draft choice. Sorry TimP, completely wrong.

every bad league has good players.

That's true. I know that both Ruikka and Rosen were also in the USHL and also played together on the same team before going to the EJHL. Not sure about the other guys mentioned.

USA Jr. Eval Camp Roster

Clendening, Coyle, and Nieto are at the World Juniors Evaluation Camp this week.

I figure it's close enough to the season that this can go here rather than the recruiting thread (or is that just wishful thinking, trying to end this waaay too long offseason?).

Also, the number of BC players from last season on the roster is insane.

Also, does anyone know how to get in to the exhibition games? Do you need tickets or anything? I'm going to be in Lake Placid (driving through, anyway, to get to Saranac Lake) on August 7th, and would love to catch at least part of the Finland game.

Re: Boston University Offseason Thread 2: Moving Forward by Booting Forwards

Got my new points statement in the mail yesterday. Not sure what it all means in the long run, but I like the effort bring put into it.

Re: Boston University Offseason Thread 2: Moving Forward by Booting Forwards

About halfway through when he circles through the neutral zone and heads up the right wing looking for the pass... I saw him do that at least three times in the Chowder Cup game I watched. He gets a full head of steam going, catches the pass on the go and just flies down the wing. He's definitely very good at it, but I wonder how he'll adjust when (not if) HE teams start to take that away from him.

FL, He's probably going to take a lot of direct smash hits as college d men aren't going to let him do that as he's done in juniors. As everyone knows the game changes dramatically when players jump to D1 levels. He may have to adjust his style in some fashion, but I would assume he's def going to get some "wake up calls" in the beginning. His hockey sense will either force him to alternate strategies or the trainers will be busy with smelling salts!:D

Nieto was cut from WJC camp. Heard Coyle was doing very well, one of top F's in camp so far...
