Boston University 2011 Offseason

Re: Boston University 2011 Offseason

"He lives vicariously through himself. Sharks have a week named after him. If he patted you on your back, you'd put it on your resume. He is the life of parties that he doesn't even attend. He is.......the most interesting poster on this board!"
Of course the most interesting poster on the board is a BU guy, just like the most interesting man in the world, Jonathan Goldsmith.

Kudos for this comment on reddit.com:

He can outrun the B Line and the 57 bus...walking on his hands.
Terriers refuse to bite him...and eagles want to be him.
The beanpot is actually /his/ beanpot.
He has been privately coaching the school's new football team...the New England Patriots.
He is the most interesting man in the world.
I don't always cheer for hockey, but when I do, it's because BC sucks.
Stay scarlet and white, my friends.

Re: Boston University 2011 Offseason

JD--- when you chimed in the talk was on HtH. You typed what it would be since grandpie was "good" and discounted beanpots and typed how Hea tourney and NCAA tourney were important. We know how NCAAs tally. I didnt know how Hea went off the top of my head, so I looked quickly and shared. If you had something else in your head as a part of the discussion, you shouldn't have kept that to yourself... Play fair!!!

I was just looking for the overall head-to-head results since the beginning of the 1997-1998 season. I was curious. I'm praying that Sean will crack and provide us that valuable info from his spreadsheet.

JP and JY are 2 of the 3 winningest college coaches of all time. Both produce elite players in high numbers, and have won championships at every level prodigiously. How is it not obvious to all but those with a grudge or some bizarre personal animus that they are basically on the same level: the elite of their sport?

They will both go down as great coaches. As stated before, I just think it's pretty clear which one should go down as the better one.

Ask the GM of the LA Kings if he think JP is some big step below JY in coaching skill.

As I'm not Hokydad, I don't have Dean Lombardi's number. Is there a certain quote you're referring to?

How else should I have read this? I usually interpret “undoubtedly irrelevant” to be similar to “totally without meaning”. ;)

When compared to postseason play? Yes, the results are meaningless. That doesn't mean the Beanpot itself is without meaning. It's great for the city, alums, kids involved, fans, etc. and provides a great opportunity for the kids to play on a big stage (possibly for the first time).

Money quote:

"Michigan is the worst." continued Lombardi. "For hockey people, if you've got a choice between a kid - all things being equal - one's going to Michigan and one's going to Boston University, you all want your player [going to Boston University]."

http://board.uscho.com/showthread.p...Kings-Rips-Jack-Johnson-and-Univ.-of-Michigan

(BTW, before the Wolverines flip out, I don't that Red sucks as a coach. It's just one example of how highly NHL poeple esteem BU products.)

When compared to postseason play? Yes, the results are meaningless.

I never said they were in anyway equivilent. Pretty clear since I didn't even bother to include the tournament results in the data. But to clarify, results of the Beanpot tournament are not relevant to the discussion of the merits of JP and JY as coaches, but the the results of BU - BC regular season games from 1997 - 2010 are definitive evidence that JY is a significantly better coach than JP?

Whatever, JD. The data is the data. You're entitled to believe whatever you want. Good luck to JY and JP this year.

Re: Boston University 2011 Offseason

Anyway, here is my last word on this silly discussion: JP vs. JY H2H at their alma maters:

BU 34 wins BC 33 wins 7 Ties

OK good... so right now Jack is "one better"..... Now we can move on to a new subject....

Anyone have a scouting report on St FX?

I'm looking forward to some hockey!

Re: Boston University 2011 Offseason

if i may add.... jerry's all time record (coaching ;)) vs bu is 31-40-6
-
jack's all time record (coaching) vs bc is 74-62-11

OK, so where's the quote involving BC?

Results of the Beanpot are irrelevant compared to how your team performs in the postseason. That's all. There is no discussion in regard to the merits of the coaches--no discussion whatsoever in my opinion. This entire time, I was just curious what the head-to-head results were since the beginning of the '97-'98 season. Don't read that much into it.

The data is the data.

This I agree with.

I have Coach York's all-time record vs BU as 34-46-7 and Coach Parker's all-time record vs BC as 74-61-12.

Sean

08/09 media guide (pg62) has "York vs Terriers" at 24-35-6

since then:
08/09 - 3bu-1bc-0
09/10 - 2-2-0
10/11 - 0bu-4bc-0

same media guide (pg 30) has Jack's record vs bc as 69-55-11

--if book is wrong, i am wrong. :(

Re: Boston University 2011 Offseason

oh, wait. the 08/09 record vs bc was 3-0-1. i have an extra win for Jerry and loss for Jack. whoopsie :(

Re: Boston University 2011 Offseason

good thing they don't waste the trees anymore then :p
Maybe, but I miss the media guides, imperfect as they were. :( If it wasn't for mistakes and missing information in the BU media guides I would never have created my database and done all the research I have done.

Re: Boston University 2011 Offseason

Allow me to interrupt the sniping for moment. Thought for a moment this should go in the Alumni thread but I think this thread is a better place.

On the Loss of a Twin Brother. :(

Two memories come to mind:

1) the deep sadness when I saw Mark's name scroll across the bottom of the TV screen that fateful day
2) the incredible turnout for his memorial in Roslindale. So many people - they opened up the church basement with an audio feed from above.

RIP Mark.

For those that want to make a case for Parker, it can best be found in tournament play (19-9) and number of championships listed (36-15).

When Len Ceglarski was the BC coach, it seemed like BC would win the regular season games and BU would win the tournament games.

Ceglarski's record in the Beanpot was so underwhelming that one might have thought that he had coached at Northeastern, not BC.

I'm partial to the 1995-96 Media Guide as I think it is simple and tastefully done, but I think the 1968-69 Winter Sports Guide has what I consider the most striking cover of all the BU guides I own.

QUOTE]

The 68-69 cover was captioned "BU's Big Guns" and, IIRC, the photo was taken at Commonwealth Armory, now the site of Agganis Arena. On the left is the late Jimmy Hayes, a regional hoops All-American who later played in the ABA. On the right, winger Mike Hyndman, whose 67 points as sophomore was, at the time, second most in a season at BU. He also became an All American, and later punched out Ryan O'Neal in "Love Story."
