Not going to happen, but imagine if it did.

Sullivan and others are better and will be higher up the list .

Look for Mike Grier, who has been outstanding at Buffalo as a player coach type and a possible add on there to be in the mix if and when JP moves on.

Sullivan, Grier and a great recruiter would be far superior.

Re: Boston University 2011 Offseason

The BU/BC basketball date and time was announced today on the BC website. 2:00 on 12/3 which is yes about 16 hours after the hockey teams plays at Conte and will end about three hours before BC comes to Agganis that night. The game is at Conte obviously which was predictable but is put right between the the two hockey games which has got to only create more buzz around that weekend. Should be a fun weekend.

It would be silly if the Athletic Dept did not;

b> Offer him a position on the staff if only to assist in recruiting.

Doesn't Parker control his staff? Plus, the guy has millions and just retired...can't see him jumping right into a position at BU.

For perspective BC is #16 after their losses, so this ranking is definitely suspect.

And where would you rank BC? Despite the big losses, take a look at the roster coming back. Still a lot of talent led by the best dman in Hockey East.

Re: Boston University 2011 Offseason

Saw a lot of Kurker at St. John's. Big bodied kid, and uses his size as well as anybody at that level. Not an exceptional skater, but was athletic enough to occasionally play well on the same line as Harvard-bound Colin Blackwell. I'll be interested to see how he develops, and if his ability to box out around net and fight along the boards translates to college game. Could be a good find. Certainly, if you're one of those folks who wants to see more Terriers in front of the net, he could be your kind of skater. He definitely seemed to embrace that role when I saw him.

I just received a recruitment brochure from the Friends of BU Hockey. The brochure displays a picture of BU players huddled around the net pregame. One of the players in the picture is Andy Glass.

I saw that too. It's that kind of attention to detail that should never allow that to happen translate on the ice by taking a very talented BU team that should be a Frozen Four bound squad and have them looking at the high point of the season making the Beanpot finals. Let's see all the posters here still living in the 90's come to the CEO's defense and blame the PR department instead of where the blame should be placed.

Not going to happen, but imagine if it did.

Former BU captain and Boston Bruins head coach Mike Sullivan will be at, or near, the top of list whenever Jack Parker decides it is time to retire.
Colorado Avalanche coach Joe Sacco may also be available then. David Quinn, John Hynes and Mike Bavis would also receive serious consideration.

If BU were Northeastern, they'd also need to check to see if a former hockey player/long ago assistant coach was working in the Development Office.
Except Mike Eruzione would never go for it. ;)

Is your statement, as it concerns Sullivan and Sacco, based upon inside knowledge, or is it speculation based upon observation?

The reason I ask is this - whenever there's a discussion as to who will be Parker's successor, Sullivan's name is mentioned. Recently, Sacco and Mike Grier have been added to the conversation (admittedly, all of this conversation occurs on this board.)

Now Sullivan, Sacco and Grier were all terrific players at BU, and all went on to lengthy NHL careers. But what is it about them that causes persons to think they'll be solid college coaches, or even that they have any interest in coaching at BU? Except for a brief turn as a volunteer assistant at BU a few years back by Sullivan, none of these guys has had any exposure to college hockey in 15 - 20 years. To the best of my knowledge, none of them has any experience assessing and projecting the talents of young players. More importantly, none of them has any experience in the most critical aspect of the college game which is recruiting, of course.

The whole thing seems comical to me. Since you made this statement most recently, can you tell me why you think Sullivan and Sacco are valid candidates to replace Parker when he steps down?

both(meaning sacco/Sullivan) have roots here, joe in your town,
both played here from 6-22
both has family here and love the area
both have kids here, young ones at that plaing mass travel hockey
both coached youth and were active in while here
both were considered player coach types.
both are passionate about BU
both are very well liked and connected in USHL and all of the junior programs. Friends everywhere..
both have coached in AHL, which deals witha ton of college and younger kids, big time focus on development
both would be an easy sell for any parent to hand their kids to for 4 years.
Both could easily be a head coach at BU and could easily add a go getter ast type to round the kids up and they come in to close.

Either would be a no brainer.

Re: Boston University 2011 Offseason

BUoldtimer,

One thing that we know is that whomever eventually replaces Jack Parker will be part of the BU Family. There will be plenty of candidates.
That hire will not be a 'Leon Abbott hire' - a surprise from the outside.

When Jack Parker briefly accepted the ADs job, and was going to step down as hockey coach, the potential replacements then were Toot Cahoon, Terry Meagher and even Buddy Powers, among others. BU alums with (head) coaching experience.

Sullivan and Sacco both had long professional playing careers and have NHL (head) coaching experience. A higher level that everyone (supposedly) aspires to reach. That certainly won't hurt with recruiting, knowing that the head coach has "been there and done that." I said supposedly because Jack Parker chose to be a college-hockey lifer, turning down multiple chances to coach the Bruins, Whalers and Kings to stay at BU.

BU is a prime hockey job. Not just a prime college hockey job. That will appeal to those that are plying their trade in the NHL. It is not a stepping stone job.
Mike Grier and Chris Drury, unlike Sacco and Sullivan, have yet to start any coaching careers, so there is no read on them.

I don't think it is possible to have any real inside knowledge at this time, because we don't know how many more years that Parker will coach. I don't think Parker has any idea of that either, but I would expect him to go for as long as his health allows and he believes that he is still effective.

We know that Parker and Sullivan are close, as Parker is with many of his former players.
Sulivan appears to be cut from the same cloth, perhaps more than the others.

But whenever the time comes, there will be no shortage of outstanding candidates. And you can bank on the next head coach being a BU man.

Re: Boston University 2011 Offseason

What's comical is us even talking about it! That old man will still be coaching long after my grandchildren are dead and gone!!! :D :D
