Boston University 2010-11 part II - The Hunt For Red November

Re: Boston University 2010-11 part II - The Hunt For Red November

I rarely post on this site anymore but was able to come up and catch the game on Sat. night. I have very little to add other than to say that I hope the underclassmen stay. The line of Nieto-Coyle-Chiasson, in particular, looks like it could be dominant next season if all 3 stick around.

On another note, we also spent Sun. afterrnoon at the Women's game. The only disappointment was a very sparse crowd. I realize the students were just getting back and the Pats were playing at 4:30 but the numbers were bad. So I am putting in a plug here: the team is great, you get to catch a game at WBA, and at $5 a ticket it is a good bargain. Definitely recommended.

I'm watching the BC - Maine game on CBS College Sports.

Can someone tell me what "jam" is? The color analyst uses that term frequently. For a minute, I thought I had a handle on it, but then he used in an entirely different context. Now, I'm confused.

that drives me crazy as well. it doesnt really seem to mean anything other than the team is playing well and executing a gameplan (usually involving forechecking). maybe 'mojo' would be a decent synonym for it; or at the very least 'legs'?

anyway, for certain bu fans who may be gossip hounds, i saw starman holding hands with the blonde rinkside chick after the game. scandalous!

I've always understood jam to mean he plays with an edge. Like "gibbons and diamond play with jam"

Maybe that's what jam is.

So, mookie, def, bomber, FL, Slurpees, et al...do the next 6-8 games make the whole season? Heavy dose of BC, Maine and UNH in there. Is that putting too much emphasis on a small set of games or will they go a long way towards helping us decide what team we have this year?

Re: Boston University 2010-11 part II - The Hunt For Red November

Have to win a bunch of them, or it 'win hockey east to advance' time.

Best part of the game (other than the win of course :)) was watching Sirman start to roll his eyes at some of the questions the blonde was shooting at him in the post-game interview. Mostly lame ones. Anyone catch that?

Honestly, how did she get a job? She's simply brutal and you can tell she's reading a script...I know nothing about the business, but at least with the good ones you can't tell they're reading something word for word.

Yeah, I need to mute it when she comes on. Actually, I wish there was a video mute, too so I don't have to see the forced facial expressions.

What mookie said. BU's tied for 12th in the PWR right now, which is a pretty good place to be. But if they lose 4 of these next 5 (or 5 of these next 7 or something if you wanna go up through BC in the Beanpot opener), you can forget about that. After BC in the Beanpot, BU doesn't play any TUC teams (unless NU continues their run and pushes their way in there), so these games against Merrimack, BC, UNH and Maine are huge. If they go 2-2-1 over these next 5, they're still probably in pretty good shape as long as they finish strong. Anything less, probably gonna have to win HE to get in. Anything more, just don't screw up down the stretch.

Audio mute and video mute? I like to call it the "off" button. :p

No doubt about it - we need to pull off some "big" wins if we want to make the NCAA's without a HE title. Frankly, here is what we need, IMHO:

1. Millan to keep playing as he has the last couple games. Two wins with some strong work in net.
2. Discipline - this team is still taking too many dumb penalties. Against UVM and Harvard, you can get away with it. Against BC, UNH, and Maine, you cannot. I'm looking at Megan and Periera primarily. I know Joe plays with high energy which can lead to penalties. But it's actually pretty simple - keep you elbows down, and your temper too.
3. Power Play - looked a little better the past two games, but again, we have to look at the competition. No slapshots from the face off dot - at least 50% of these swing out of the zone. The only time this play should be tried is when it is a cross ice pass, as on Connolly's first goal against Harvard. From the center blue line, it makes no sense. All you do is worsen your angle.
4. Big Time players - this team is not talented enough to win with a balanced scoring attack. The second line (Coyle, Chiasson, Nieto) has to take their play to a new level. We've seen glimpses of it. But not on a regular basis. We need that line to be feared in the league.

It may be unjust to get down on the team if they don't come out of this stretch at .500 or better, given the competition. However, they will need to do so to be in the NCAA's.

Thanks!...for a team that tends to be streaky anyway, let's hope they are on a good streak for the next several important games...we can step up the ladder and send 1-2 teams down below us in HE and the national picture...or we start practicing the golf swing in the mirror. I watched the Harvard game and then a bit the NC game (DVR) the other night and the difference in speed of the breakout, the confidence to make bold passes and speed of decision making are extremely pronounced to my eye. Granted, that was a team for the ages, but the contrast is stark.

First of all, the blonde woman that does "sideline" reporting for CBS College Sports is indeed brutally awful. I'd forgive it if she were hot.

Secondly, here is the hard question we need to ask regarding this upcoming stretch of games: Is BU better than BC, Maine, UNH, or Merrimack? Hmmm. Definitely not BC. Maine? UNH? Merrimack!?

I'd take 2-3. 3-2 would be awesome. 1-4 would suck, but not a shocker. 0-5 and we'll be calling for Jack's head again. :)

BU Hockey: Reality Check

PS: Defkit: Two lines need to step it up. And the d needs to find their inner nasty. You know, without the penalties.

Two lines would indeed be better than one. However, if the first line maintains their recent play, but the seond line clearly becomes the "top" line offensively, then I think we'll still be okay. I guess I would look to the third line before the first line. The first line being upperclassmen, I don't see a big increase in production as a possibility. But perhpas, Megan, Gaudet, and Gill can step it up, as underclassmen, and can find some chemistry and touch.

I think Merrimack and BU are very similar teams, have great net minders and play with a physicality that is unmatched in HE. Something interesting I've noticed about BU, can't quite put my finger on it, but they always play with an extra spring in their step...dare I say..."jam". haha

Ive been to many BU games, rarely have I seen them play a dud...I think that comes from the tradition embedded in the program and the man behind the bench that the boys are playing for. BU is always a threat, especially in the post season. I think tonight's game might be the best matchup of any two hockey east teams all year long. I'm sad I'm going to miss it.
