Re: Boston University 2010-11 part II - The Hunt For Red November
J.J., "Why do the BU kids seem to leave earlier than some other schools?" Compare the rosters of the Hockey East schools. BC and BU have many more kids who have been or are likely to be selected in the NHL draft, many of them "blue-chippahs." Parker has historically gone for the more prototypical NHL prospect while York went for many smaller, speedier types who could thrive in the collegiate arena, not so much in the rough and tumble of pro hockey. BC's success in the last decade has allowed them to go after some of the NHL style players who are flight risks because they have their pick of the litter in many recruiting areas. Look at what BC bloggers on EagleAction are saying about their new blue chip recruit, Matheson, a d-man from Ontario. Hotly pursued by BU, he wanted to stay East for college. But many think he's longed fro the BC campus for at most two years, if he gets there at all. People fear he'll turn out like some former BU targets, like Kane, Esposito and Werek, among others, and succumb to the lure of MJ rather than ever reaching campus. Purportedly BC pulled its original offer to Clendenning because he was seriously considering MJ even after he committed to BC. BTW, look at the top Western schools. Minnesota, North Dakota, Wisconsin, even Michigan, among others. They perenially hook top recruits, only to see them either never arrive on campus or leave after one or two years. While I hate to see these guys turn pro so early, it tends to make college hockey more like college b-ball, where a school can have a magical year only to fall back to the pack overnight because of early departures. Welcome to the world of bigtime college sports.
