Wow b2live is terrible. I feel like I'm watching a game from the 80s on rabbit ears.

Re: Boston University 2010-11 part II - The Hunt For Red November

We had a solid five minute stretch there in the third where we looked gooooood.

So... the last time BU missed the NCAAs two years in a row I wasn't alive...

Somethings gotta turn around quickly here, especially with the schedule getting tougher.

the interesting item is... in BOTH of these seasons, they HAVE BEEN RANKED #1 IN THE COUNTRY!!!!

now, that's gotta be some kind of record!! :D

be ranked #1, AND miss the ncaa tournament.

hmmmmm

wasn't last year preseason? that means nothing. at least this year they "earned" their way to the top, even though they didn't deserve it and got there by process of elimination more or less.

re: missing the tournament, while this stretch through the end of january and the beanpot is brutal, starting february 1 through the end of the regular season, we play 10 games, eight of which are against teams we have not lost to, and should (<-- operative word) beat. While those wins likely wouldn't do much for rpi and pwr, it would help big time in hockey east standings and getting home ice, hopefully above what will be a dreaded 4-5 series. There's an opportunity to get some momentum there, albeit against marginal to bad teams, but nonetheless, a chance to build some confidence going into the postseason.

BU was never ranked No. 1 last season, preseason or in-season. I believe the highest they got was No. 2 in one of the preseason polls.

MC's coach after the win last night:

“They weren’t handing out any trophies tonight. But we could help ourselves out by taking care of business and winning at home. It was very businesslike; it was very matter-of-fact. Not much rah-rah. That’s the benefit of having a veteran club.”

I couldn't agree with this statement more. Didn't we all see a stong year coming in the summer prior to the 08-09 season when Gilroy, Wilson, and Yip all said they'd be back on campus? I'm not sure I saw the 35 wins and the championship, but a strong team and a good year.

I guess what I'm saying is when can BU expect to have a veteran team with the amount of early departures we've had lately? Wilson, Bonino, Shattenkirk, C Cohen, Strait are a few names that come to mind. Four of these guys would be seniors this year. I don't blame them for leaving and wish them the best, but it's hard on the team.

Now we have to deal with SI articles talking about Coyle leaving after one year.

My neighbor, who's a BC season ticket holder, recently said, "Why do the BU kids seem to leave earlier than some other schools?"

I don't really have the statistics, but it does seem that way sometimes. Perhaps they recruit high draft picks is the only reason?

It would be interesting if someone could have a look at the top 20 programs of the past decade, determine the number of guys who play in the AHL/NHL from each program, and the number of years each guy stayed in school.

That would be telling IMHO.

J.J., "Why do the BU kids seem to leave earlier than some other schools?" Compare the rosters of the Hockey East schools. BC and BU have many more kids who have been or are likely to be selected in the NHL draft, many of them "blue-chippahs." Parker has historically gone for the more prototypical NHL prospect while York went for many smaller, speedier types who could thrive in the collegiate arena, not so much in the rough and tumble of pro hockey. BC's success in the last decade has allowed them to go after some of the NHL style players who are flight risks because they have their pick of the litter in many recruiting areas. Look at what BC bloggers on EagleAction are saying about their new blue chip recruit, Matheson, a d-man from Ontario. Hotly pursued by BU, he wanted to stay East for college. But many think he's longed fro the BC campus for at most two years, if he gets there at all. People fear he'll turn out like some former BU targets, like Kane, Esposito and Werek, among others, and succumb to the lure of MJ rather than ever reaching campus. Purportedly BC pulled its original offer to Clendenning because he was seriously considering MJ even after he committed to BC. BTW, look at the top Western schools. Minnesota, North Dakota, Wisconsin, even Michigan, among others. They perenially hook top recruits, only to see them either never arrive on campus or leave after one or two years. While I hate to see these guys turn pro so early, it tends to make college hockey more like college b-ball, where a school can have a magical year only to fall back to the pack overnight because of early departures. Welcome to the world of bigtime college sports.

BU, Wisc, NoDak, Michigan and Mich St certainly have had their ups and downs. JY seems to have it all figured out. Kavanaugh (sp.?), too.

Dan Cavanaugh. Safe to say that was a bad decision for him. It hurt BU too. Could have used his skills.

If JY means Jerry York, I'm assuming he means Mike Cavanaugh, the BC associate head coach and long time successful recruiter.

That actually surprises me given the 11 year FF drought from 97 to 08. Never missed the tourney twice....interesting.

Oh, yeah...my fault. I should know that Old Timer would know how to spell the last name of a BU player.
