Boston College Off-Season Thread: 2012 National Champions

Re: Boston College Off-Season Thread: 2012 National Champions

very true melissa, wasn't talking smack about the kid just trying to get some reasons as to why he won't be at BC. I think we're all disappointed a player of his caliber won't be joining the team and it being so close to the season for a reason no one can tell us, has lead to us all wanting to know why. Haven't seen people really being malicious, just reporting what they've heard, me included.

Agreed. Apparently we aren't allowed to wonder on a message board why a recruit left school early.

What's the main difference between the two? I don't know anyone who took the ACTs

I'm sure others could comment on it, as I didn't know anyone who took them either. Maybe it is a regional thing?

That's how I always understood it. ACT is big on the west coast. SAT on the east coast. Obviously it's a mix in between.

The ACT is an achievement test, measuring what a student has learned in school. The SAT is more of an aptitude test, testing reasoning and verbal abilities.

The ACT has up to 5 components: English, Mathematics, Reading, Science, and an optional Writing Test. The SAT has only 3 components: Critical Reasoning, Mathematics, and a required Writing Test.

Re: Boston College Off-Season Thread: 2012 National Champions

Basically here's the deal with the NCAA clearinghouse stuff.

For D1 athletes they need to reach a certain point on a sliding scale of GPA and SAT or ACT score. They can take the tests as many times as they want, unless a school says otherwise but don't know of any that do. What happens is usually if a student is having trouble with the SAT or ACT, they'll take the other one as well. Had a friend of mine take the SAT's 3 times and the ACT's twice to get into an Ivy league school for lacrosse. Pretty common for these kind of things to happen. Now another thing they'll do is retake some classes online, if they are allowed to for the particular course to replace a grade for a class, and has to be approved by the NCAA. This kind of thing occurs all the time.

So IF it was an NCAA clearinghouse issue it would've been not being able to achieve a certain level on the sliding scale.

If you want to see the sliding scale, its here... https://web1.ncaa.org/eligibilitycenter/hs/d1_standards.pdf

Yes, but why is this coming out now? Did he just take the ACT yesterday? I'm assuming when he was admitted, he was admitted without condition (ie, you are in provided that you improve your ACT score by 5pts). This makes no sense to me given that he is a US-based kid who was attending an accredited high school etc. You generally see this stuff come up this late with foreign players where this information is a lot less crystal.

Someone dropped the ball here big time.

I also believe it's more common in the south as well.

As for the reasons why, I have no idea. I don't know a kid that took it either.

It can take many months for the clearinghouse to review transcripts (there are thousands of student athletes entering transcripts through the clearinghouse each year, and trust me, there are no strings to pull... wait your turn in line). Maybe the results of a recent test were just reviewed and they didn't qualify. Maybe the results of a recent test have not been reviewed as of yet. Lots of reasons.

I believe recently a kid at Merrimack sat out the first semester because of clearinghouse issues. I know first hand of a player some years ago that sat out half of a fall sport season because the transcripts arrived late and she had not been cleared by the clearinghouse until mid October. So, it's not cut and dried that anyone dropped the ball here.

From what I have seen it usually only takes the clearinghouse a week or two if everything is in order. I'm guessing that BC accepted him awhile ago and issues came up after that time they weren't aware of. It's too bad the NCAA is so harsh on kids. I feel like a lot of the people who make the rules are out of touch.

Re: Boston College Off-Season Thread: 2012 National Champions

Clearinghouse is the minimum academic requirements for NCAA; BC can admit anyone it wants, at any time, regardless of their grades/scores - but that student can not participate in sports.

Re: Boston College Off-Season Thread: 2012 National Champions

Higher standard than the regular student body? I don't remember/can't imagine BC (or any other D1 school) claiming that.

Ya I'm not sure where they got that from. Whatever. Toss that in with redhead's post.

Re: Boston College Off-Season Thread: 2012 National Champions

Stole this from someone on EA:

York Quote on Twitter from the sports editors for the Heights: "Frank Vatrano has withdrawn from the University. Per BC policy, we're not allowed to discuss any academic issues. But we're certainly going to miss him. He's a terrific young guy and we wish him nothing but the best."

Now, while BC can't talk about it, USHR put a call in to the Vatrano camp. So maybe Vatrano would talk to them and reveal what his plans are.

1. I will not be buying one of those, but I appreciate the creativity/effort on your part. Will these shirts arrive before the gold unis that a lot of people purchased?

2. Me asking that question could very well lead to Patriot Golfer creating a USCHO account.

LOL. At this rate my unborn son's "Salzano For Hobey 2039" shirts will arrive before those effing jerseys.
