Boston College Off-Season Thread: 2012 National Champions

Re: Boston College Off-Season Thread: 2012 National Champions

Pretty impressive to be preseason #1 without having a roster of players :D:p

Sorting out the abundance of talent is such a thrash! Roster limits are so unfair. How do you cut someone who could play on the second line at bu?;)

I predict that the roster will be available before gametime againt New Brunswick. Maybe.

Re: Boston College Off-Season Thread: 2012 National Champions

Great get for BC to have New Brunswick in for an exhibition game. The Red Devils are perennially amongst the best university teams in Canada. Will be more than a scrimmage and will help the Eagles get ready for the HE schedule. And check out the half-visors -- would love to see the NCAA adopt them!

It will be interesting to see how the UNB-BC game goes. I'll be making the trip down with the long-time volunteer stats guy who runs vredshockey.com.

The Varsity Reds (they had to give up the Red Devils name back in the late 90's when the AD rebranded all the varsity sports) are in a bit of rebuild mode. Their top three defenceman from last year, all conference all-stars, have graduated. Their captain (and best centre) graduated. Five other players have moved on. Their second-best (or 3rd) remaining d-man, who won the training camp fitness competition, is injured. A new roster limit cap for the conference (AUS) next season is affecting recruiting this season. One of UNB's top d-men recruits has opted to try pro hockey, so they've moved veteran (but injury prone) forward Daine Todd to defence. They've got two transfer players, key forwards who played at SMU and StFX (UNB rivals), who are still sorting out their eligiblity vis-a-vis grad school and aren't eligible to play yet.

The V-Reds played their first three exhibition games this past week and they were certainly lacking their normal finish around the net.

All that being said, they'll "bring it" to the game. UNB takes a lot of pride in usually playing pretty well against NCAA teams.

Not sure if you guys knew about this ...?

Hearing rumblings that Frank Vatrano is out at BC

I'm afraid I can't say anything more about Vatrano besides this. He was not at practice today and it was not b/c of an injury.

Re: Boston College Off-Season Thread: 2012 National Champions

No, no, no...he only does that with BU. Come on Gentry.

If this is true, perhaps explains why no roster yet.

Re: Boston College Off-Season Thread: 2012 National Champions

I think not getting drafted had a lot to do with Vatrano leaving. If he goes to the Q he's probably thinking he'll get a lot more playing time, and more opportunities to show he's worthy of a pick. There were rumblings of this on some message boards way back in March about him possibly not coming. The reason being his skating was an issue, in that he could really only move in a straight line, really bad edge work. Some people were saying the staff at BC weren't happy with his development and actually looking to push him back to 2013, which still could happen who knows at this point, but I see as highly unlikely.

Jumping to the CHL will only hurt his status - IMO. He's in not a high end pick or he would have been picked up this year after spending 2 years with the USNTDP - the most promoted team in every draft. MAYBE a team will take a chance on him BECAUSE he is with the top rate NCAA program and they have 4 years to sign him. Going to the Q guarantees nothing. As disappointed as he may be getting a solid education while further developing his skill is a less risky plan. #lifeafterhockey

Re: Boston College Off-Season Thread: 2012 National Champions

Man, for as much pride as there is all over canada for "their" hockey and their guys...they sure do love plucking american kids. Since this is only breaking now, I have to wonder what could have caused a move at this point. The last scenario I can remember like this was with kenny ryan. I think he only played in one exhibition game.

Mike McMahon is reporting on twitter after conversations with his sources he expects Vatrano to sign with Moncton in the next couple days. He's usually pretty tied into these things, so I'd put it at not definite, but probable he's headed there.

Re: Boston College Off-Season Thread: 2012 National Champions

Everyone is WAY off With the reason for his departure. It has nothing to do with his play, in fact early word was he would have been an impactful player from the start. I'll leave it at this, it wasn't the coaches call nor was it Frank's call to leave. I don't want to leak it, just wanted to dispell the posts about his lack of talent. This is a huge loss.

Does this leave BC with any extra forwards?

We have a metric $#!+ton of forwards. We'll be fine. Matheson is more important to this team than Vatrano was (not that it doesn't stink to lose him).

Interesting - who else's call could it be? the school (academic issues)? his family?

That leaves the advisor and parents or the school (legal trouble?).

Re: Boston College Off-Season Thread: 2012 National Champions

academically ineligible or money issues are only 2 reasons I could see.

Re: Boston College Off-Season Thread: 2012 National Champions

Looks like he just got claimed by Dubuque in case he wants to do a year in the USHL.
