Boston College Off-Season Thread: 2012 National Champions

Re: Boston College Off-Season Thread: 2012 National Champions

Agreed with Frazier. Wisconsin is a program that has similar ties (3 major sports, old school football, etc).

I think Leahy/BC BOT realize the damage that was done by Spaz (especially in their minds, $$$ wise) and spending the extra $ is worth it in the long run. Granted we're not going to see $4MM like Saban is getting.

As for hte next coach, I've always believed that York's successor is already with him behind the bench. As for Dennehy, I also remember them going for Cross' knee a couple of years ago

Dennehy is a BC guy but I have my doubts as to whether he will be the right fit. First of all, I think it's apparent he's done amazing things at Merrimack and a lot of stuff off the ice is not even getting enough recognition. His formula and BC's formula are two very different things, both somewhat required at each school at least for now. It remains to be seen whether he could fit into BC's model. I doubt BC wants him bringing in overaged kids from Canada (where a lot of his contacts are) and France to play a boring style of hockey (top to bottom those kids battle, I'll give them that). Player development will be important. Aside from catching a nice goalie and a kid from France, can he develop 18 year old kids into NHL-ready players? A lot remains to be seen with him. You could argue that coaching at BC is like shooting fish in a barrel and he would carry a lot of credibility locally after doing what he did at Merrimack and having the title of BC hockey coach. To some degree sure it is something he can do like almost anyone could but the difference between sleep-walking to 20 wins and pulling off the February-April magic is a fine art that Jerry York has perfected and apparently very few others know. I'll take Brown, who has been around York for quite a while now, over Dennehy any day (note what BC has done since Brown has been on the staff - it might be a coincidence, it might not. Defense has been outstanding in the playoffs lately, 2008 was a freaking miracle job with those kids). I doubt Cavanaugh would get the job, he is a Spaziani/Bud Foster type guy that is the best in the business at being an assistant but probably wouldn't be able to pull of the HC job (I hope Cav stays here forever and ends up retiring with 10+ NCs).

The thuggery from Merrimack during the Maine series this past year, clearly something in my mind that was a directive from the coaching staff there, has also made me push him further from the top of my list (if not pushing him below some others, widening the gap between the next best alternatives).

Interesting you see Greg Brown with less than half of the coaching experience of Cavanaugh getting the nod.

Re: Boston College Off-Season Thread: 2012 National Champions

I don't claim to know either guy and I'm on record as saying I think Cav should be the next coach, but I get the impression that in the "hockey world", Greg Brown is a blue chip prospect if you will, a rising start in the coaching industry. Maybe I'm wrong about that, just my perception.

Re: Boston College Off-Season Thread: 2012 National Champions

Obviously WAY, WAY too early to get excited, but BC recruit Conor McGlynn played his first game of the season tonight for the USHL's Sioux City Musketeers vs Team USA and had 2 goals and an assist. He's already 6' 2" and 195 lbs and just turned 17 in June, so he looks to be a nice power forward type player for us when he shows up.

McGlynn was impressive last night. Plays a great Power Forward roll. Goes to the hard areas, hits and can skate. Will be a nice edition to the strong incoming 2013 class. Santini and Savage looked good with the nod going to Savage last night. Both players can skate and are good size Other BC recruites on hand are Adam Gilmore and Goal tender Chirs Birdsall. Birdsall was impressive for a 16 year old. Not the biggest goal tender but challenged the shooters and showed good movement in the crease. Gilmore looked ok. Needs the bring some physical play to his game. Skates well. Didn't see much time with the puck.

Re: Boston College Off-Season Thread: 2012 National Champions

2 more goals for McGlynn tonight, so he's now got a 4-1-5 line in 2 USHL games. Not bad for a 17 year old first year player. And to think he was just an afterthought in regard to next years incoming class.....

Another good game for McGlynn. Has nose for the net and really reads the play well. Was a top five point producer in the preseason with only 2 games played.

An after thought? Maybe a player coming into a solid 2013 recruiting class but not an after thought. BC has so much to look forward to with so many solid recruits coming in in 2012 and again in 2013

Re: Boston College Off-Season Thread: 2012 National Champions

"Afterthought" was probably a little too strong a word, but he certainly didn't light it up last year playing for the Oakville Blades, albeit as a 16 year old, something like 11 goals in 40 games, in a league not as good as the USHL. I think people have been paying a lot more attention to guys like Cangelosi, Fitzgerald, Calnan, Richardson, etc, but still, most teams would have killed to land a recruit like McGlynn and he obviously looks like he's pretty good.

Read what you wrote, then think about it a little bit.
Tom Brady probably wouldn't light it up playing with a high school team. Not using Brady/McGlynn as a comparison, just an analogy.
That being said, if McGlynn is good enough for the BC staff, I'm going to guess he's a pretty good hockey player. ;)

I believe he is. Very different player from his brother but he is described as a two-way player that is very tenacious. Very good in all zones and will bring a high compete level every shift.. I think he's flying under the radar and will do quite well for BC as a role player.

You're probably not too far off if you consider the brothers to be similar to Brian and Stephen Gionta.

Its not like he's some random kid coming into the USHL. He's been heavily scouted, made the top 40 camp for the NTDP and has been at every USA Hockey National Select camp he's been eligible for. Was a 6th round pick in the OHL draft, which is very high for a player that never plans on playing there. Could end up being the best forward in the group to tell you the truth. He's still filling into his frame and really putting it all together now.

Good video/report on him from last year.

I would agree. Many of the local recruits get a lot of buzz simply because they are here and are scouted. Lets assume that York and company have a handle on things with McGlynn and the balance of the 2013 class.

About Matt Gaudreau, he's not quite the player Johnny was in the USHL. Those are big shoes to fill but its the best comparison we have and perhaps unfair. Matt had an ok rookie year with Omaha posting a 8-14-22 line in 53 games. Johnny posted a 36-36-72 in 60 games as a rookie.

Some early reads on players for 2013. Still plenty of hockey to go.

Forwards

McGlynn - 4-1-5 in two games (USHL)
Cangelosi - 3-2-5 in 5 games (USHL)
Richardson - 0-5-5 in 5 games (BCHL)
Gaudreau - 0-1-1 in 3 games (USHL)
Gilmore - 0-1-1 in 4 games (USHL)

Defense

Savage - 1-2-3 in 4 games (USHL)
Santini - 0-0-0 in 4 games (USHL)

I couldn't fine anything on Calnan and Fitzgerald.

It will be interesting to see how BC manages the roster and recruits for 2013 and 2014. Defense is in good shape and they will have 8 on hand for 2013 and 7 for 2014. I don't see how they will work through the forwards. If nothing gives they'll have 19. Won't happen. Maybe a few leave for the pro ranks and one or two choose to move way from the team. Even then having 15 or 16 is trouble and the numbers don't get any better in 2014 even if they push one or two from 2013 into 2014. What are the odds that one or two look for other options?

Re: Boston College Off-Season Thread: 2012 National Champions

that is not true.

Alvarez brought in Sean Frazier, who is the deputy director of athletics, second in command.
http://www.uwathletics.com/bios/rosters/default.aspx?deptid=101

He is hockey oriented big time.

Was AD at Merrimack, Clarkson and at U Maine, all hockey schools. Does have a football background but has been all about hockey past 15-20 years and still is..

Clarkson University, Potsdam, NY
 Negotiated brand identity program & athletic apparel agreement for entire University with Boathouse Sports Company and CCM hockey outfitter.
 Created plan for the start-up of Division I Women’s Ice Hockey.
 Cultivated men’s ice hockey program that reached the 2004 ECAC Hockey Championship game which was the best finish for the program since 1999
Clarkson fans rejoiced when he left. IMO he was looking to advance his career to the next level. His steps have been
D-III
D-III with a D-I program
D-II with a D-I program
D-I assistant

IMO he stays just long enough to improve the resume, but leaves early enough so the stink does not stick. Stay away from him.

IIRC, he alienated a lot of Merrimack folks, too.

Re: Boston College Off-Season Thread: 2012 National Champions

I don't have a problem with a guy looking to advance his career. I mean, there's a reason he's in the position at Wisconsin he's in, no? After moving up the ranks at Clarkson, Maine, Merrimack...he's one step away from being an AD, the lead guy at a BCS school. Hell, if he views BC as a stepping stone job, so be it. The only way it becomes a stepping stone is if he does a good job.

Fitz and Calnan are playing in the EJ.

Fitzgerald leads the EJ in points playing for the Valley Junior Warriors. 4gp 1g 5a 6p 4PIM
Calnan is playing for Scott Harlow's South Shore Kings. 4gp 0g 1a 1p 14PIM

Wanted to see them playing in USHL but Calnan playing for Harlow is actually probably a great fit. Great training there and has developed the likes of Charlie Coyle and Chris Wagner recently. Don't know much about Heinze at Valley but anything is better than playing HS for Fitz, good to see him doing well.

It's actually spelled "Gilmour."

Hell, if he views BC as a stepping stone job, so be it. The only way it becomes a stepping stone is if he does a good job.

This is the problem I always had with Napoleon when looking at football coaches.

Yeah it would be awesome to find a Beamer type who would stay at the school for a long time consistently win 10 games, etc. But if the person views it as a stepping stone he needs to succeed to move on.

Hell, maybe he'll even like the place.

But I digress, less than 3 weeks till real hockey

Re: Boston College Off-Season Thread: 2012 National Champions

Pretty impressive to be preseason #1 without having a roster of players :D:p
