Boston College Hockey, Part II

Re: Boston College Hockey, Part II

Dear people who criticize Gibbons, please imagine me one inch from your face after eating lots of garlic and not brushing my teeth screaming every insult and bad word you know at you at the top of my lungs.

That kid sacrifices himself every night (ever take a look at his face when he has to go to the tunnel area with Bert Lenz?) for the TEAM.

Re: Boston College Hockey, Part II

Anyone else concerned by how that champ. game went? They gave up six goals and Muse was very vulnerable over his shoulder stick-side. Twice they gave up leads within 60 seconds of scoring. They couldn't stay out of the box. They had trouble setting up in the zone. And they scored several goals that a good goalie would have snagged easily, including the GWG.

Looking forward to the NCAA's - and the bracket of death, it looks like - and tonight's performance doesn't exactly fill me with confidence.

Notwithstanding, congratulations to the team and w00t, another trophy!

PS, Maine is going to be sick next year if they can find a goalie. That House-Nyquist-Diamond line is awesome.

Speaking of sacrificing themselves every night, your work doesn't go un-noticed. Slipping and sliding on the ice just to set up the goal cam, and risking life and limb to climb back over the railing into the stands. Good job out of you! :D

I really hope that you just have a superstition that requires you to be such a negative nellie all the time re: BC and that deep down you are happy.

Re: Boston College Hockey, Part II

Lots to be concerned about, but for now, lots to celebrate. Couldn't have picked a better guy to score the winner than Matt Lombardi.

On to the regionals. Can't wait.

While we shouldn't have given up 6 goals, give Maine some credit. They boast the nation's best power play and 3rd highest scoring offense. They can score (they scored 10 goals against St. Lawrence...in one game!), and when given a lot of power plays, they are going to score.
The officiating tonight wasn't great. The refs were calling way too many penalties in my opinion, and didn't call some obvious ones (like when that Maine player knocked out the net???). I think we'll just have to bank on not having a Hockey East officiating crew (preferably no Benedetto or Hanson) in any of our NCAA games. Still, we should play smarter regardless, and we usually do.
Also, in terms of us scoring a bunch of softies: don't forget we had at least 2 or 3 pucks hit post and that other play early in the game where I think the puck landed on or right near the goal line but Wilson knocked it out. Wilson made a few great glove saves, too, so those bad breaks kind of made up for the fact that we had some good breaks/cheap goals go our way.
Bring on the 'Nooks. Crazy to think that both the Hockey East and the WCHA tourney champions will be in the same bracket this season. Definitely a bracket of death...not to mention both BC and UND (and even Michigan if they get placed in our bracket!) are red hot.

This is what I have a problem with on here. It's perfectly legit to criticize Gibbons when he takes dumb, unnecessary penalties. On the other hand, I think most would praise him for sticking up for Whitney. I have no problem with that. He's a tenacious forward who is absolutely one of the best defensive forwards in the league. In fact, I think he is the best there is.

Also, it's legit to voice concerns about this team's occasional lack of killer instinct (Denver Cup, Beanpot game against BU, @UNH, game one against UMass, tonight). They are Hockey East Champions--a tremendous accomplishment. That doesn't mean there aren't things that need to be cleaned up before they take the ice again.

Way too many penalties even if the officiating was terrible. Stay out of the box and do what you do best--skate. Muse wasn't nearly as sharp (first goal was bad rebound control). Poor decisions--Dumoulin and J. Whitney on the 4th Maine goal.

It's another trophy though. They are the best team in Hockey East.

I think he brings up some very valid points, but I will address his concerns below...

Nah... they've played like this a lot this season. ;) The score would have been 7-6 if BC had a piece of 6' wide by 3' high plywood between the pipes last night. When this team plays an opponent that can shoot the puck, the D absolutely must work harder at keeping the opponent on the perimeter and quality shots from the slot to a minimum.
Or, the 'O' can light the lamp 6 or 7 times. Either way works. :)

Saw you on the jumbo screen last night Zudnic.

Re: Boston College Hockey, Part II

it may be crazy to say this but it almost felt like a loss. i mean i am REALLY happy about a 9th HE Championship n'all but last night's game raised questions that were thought to have already been answered, especially after friday's clean, crisp game. Goal tending, inexperience on defense mainly and throw in way too many penalties (some were really questionable calls, some not too smart ) against the #1 power play in the country and, oh yeah, the thing about focusing after you score a goal:( . I think i have become a spoiled fan but a performance like that at this time of year is surprising. This was our 7th HE championship in 13 years, an amazing run........Thanks, Jerry and staff and all the great players we've had during these 12-13 years, truly the golden age of BC hockey. NOW the real games start! GO EAGLES

Re: Boston College Hockey, Part II

Congrats to BC and its fans. One heck of a game last night, BC is a dangerous team, good luck in the NCAA Tournament.

You said that very well... I know the feeling. ;)
3-0 shutout to the 7-6 W_T_F? :D
It's fun to watch though, eh? :)

Re: Boston College Hockey, Part II

Classic case of BC's continued success giving fans unrealistic expectations. BC stole back the two banners that hang in the garden from BU, I don't care how they did it, they will be BC banners for another year.

Now go get the one that means the most.....

LOL

So it was unreasonable to expect a better performance last night in the following areas?

Goaltending
Defense
Faceoffs
Discipline
Killer Instinct

That is not unrealistic. Everyone is thrilled they won, but it raised some legit concerns in that if they play like this against a better team with a goalie (Eidsness and North Dakota), they will lose.

It was just one game though, the exception rather than the rule.

Denver lost twice, Wisconsin once, and Miami once this weekend. BC won ugly in a game they really didn't need vs. a team that was playing for their lives. That close game may be the best thing that ever happened to them

Re: Boston College Hockey, Part II

Hi everybody,

I have been reading this forum for the past 4-5 years and finally decided to sign up. I thought BC played a good game last night except for a few defensive zone break downs. What the hell was J. Whitney thinking when he blindly threw the puck in front of the net. And on the tying goal with 30 seconds left, if you dont win that draw you have to tie your man up. You cant let him walk to the front of the net untouched. Also I want to add that I was not that confident in Muse last night. Everything seemed like it had a chance to go in. With that said I think York will straighten things out (like he always does) and get this team ready to make a deep run in the tourny.
