BC Women's Hockey 2024-2025: Embrace The Chaos

Its all about the recruiting. We currently have very few players that can play at the D1 level. The BC roster is filled with kids that have no business being on a division 1 roster. NONE. Whose fault is that ? The players ? Of course not. Every hockey player has a dream of playing Division 1 hockey. Its the coaches who are recruiting them. Many of these kids were offered scholarships when they were freshman in high school ! BC has unfortunately proven that this recruiting strategy doesn't work. Where are all the Canadian players ? Where are the European players ? Where are the Minnesota players ? How about California ? Does anyone outside of New England want to come play hockey at Boston College ? Do the BC coaches ever leave Boston ? Last time I looked BC was ranked as a very good school, has a beautiful campus and great facilities . What in the world is going on here ? Clarkson can do it but we cant ?

Enough is enough. I've had it.

Now let's go beat another D3 team Holy Cross this weekend.

No disrespect taken Reggie. And I understand your point about playing the frosh against the #1 team in the country. However, I don't think it would have mattered who suited up for BC. Wisconsin is a wagon, and Mark Johnson is an excellent coach.

Similar to BC, Harvard has seen their recruiting go downhill to the point where we have a roster filled with D2 and D3 players. Even the few games that we won last year were one sided in favor of the opposition. It took our goalies standing on their heads to achieve victory.

I don't have the in-depth knowledge of recruiting patterns that many of you have on this board. I can only speak from the Harvard perspective. Our coaches have to deal with three important disadvantages compared to other schools. 1. the academic index or AI. 2. a VERY limited travel budget to recruit and 3. no athletic scholarships. The school looks to its alumni for recruiting support and will not, under any circumstances, dive into the endowment for funding. Just won't happen.

One reason I think Laura Bellamy was hired was her connection to her home state (Minnesota). The hope being this connection will enable her to coax a few highly ranked players to choose Harvard. I know it's a pipe dream in this age of the transfer portal and NIL, but we don't have a lot of leeway. I'm guessing that is what went into Dartmouth's thinking to hire Maura Crowell.

PK had been struggling but seemed like they were knocking on the door on their first couple opportunities today. Nice to see them break through on that.

Refs certainly gave both BC & HC a lot of special teams practice, damn.

Big weekend for BCWIH and I am looking forward to watching both games. I have said for years that of all the programs in the East, Clarkson is the one that seems to do it better than everyone else. I know Derosier is a good coach and I know they are near Canada but there is simply no reason for them to be that much better than us. NONE. Hopefully we can make a good showing this weekend.

I am interested to watch both Fess and Goffredo. They are both darn good players and seem to be off to strong starts. I watched Alexis Guay become a star last year at Clarkson after 4 very mediocre years at BC and wouldn't be surprised at all if both Fess and Goffredo have great seasons at Clarkson. Now TTT will tell you that there was no money available for them but we all know that was not the case. Both players (and families) were under the impression that they would be invited back for their 5th year until they were both blindsided after the last game. This continues to be a huge issue for me. They would both be impact players if they were wearing maroon and gold this year and everyone knows it.

Did anyone else notice that Madison Crowley Cahill was voted the Hockey East defender of the week now playing for UNH ? You just cant make this stuff up. She wasn't even on the team last year ? Again Tony will tell us all that Kinger had her reasons blah blah blah but if she was such a problem why did UNH take her ? I always thought she was a darn good defender and after watching BCWIH defense struggle, it is obvious that she could help the team this year.

Well, I'm happy to start the discussion anyway

WOOOOOOOOO

Pretty darn good weekend! Both games played out in a kind of similar fashion with Clarkson coming out firing, but the response as the game went on was tremendous.

In game 1, after getting peppered during a 5 on 3 in the 2nd, I thought the Eagles played some of their best hockey those last several minutes of the period and then really didn't give Clarkson too much in the 3rd.

Game 2, same thing with Clarkson coming out really strong in the 1st, but the response was there again. This time it was a wild and crazy 3rd period that saw BC storm back from being down 3-1 after a couple Clarkson goals early on.

They needed Campbell to be outstanding and she certainly was over the course of 120 minutes.

What was most encouraging was BC really found ways to create scoring opportunities. Too many games have had us just kind of slogging around and hoping for Newhook or something to take over This was a quality effort against a really good team.

​​That Holy Cross loss feels pretty distant in the mirror right now. Nobody in Hockey East is all that good, but there are about 5 of us who are pretty decent. Would be nice to see if we can stake a claim as a contender over the next few weeks. The rest of the first half is freaking brutal, so we're going to get a good idea of where we really stand before the break.

It's just really nice for the team to put together a weekend like this (I believe it's the first time in program history that they had a weekend sweep of a top 5 team). Sometimes a couple big games like that where you can actually feel what winning big games feels like can give you an "aha" moment that makes you play a little differently.
 
Reggie is sure risking losing whatever credibility he may have if he simply ignores what happened this weekend.

Sorry guys but is this a flippin joke ? So now I'm losing credibility because I don't post immediately after watching both games that I actually attended ? Sorry guys I actually have a life.

And to fanboy TTT shame on you for trying to imply that for some reason I might be upset that BC had 2 tremendous wins over Clarkson while you sit on your arse somewhere and watch on your computer. No one is a bigger BCWIH fan than me and I know it upsets you that I think your buddy kinger needs to go but trust me no one was happier than me walking out of Conte yesterday. I actually jumped out of my chair when Pellerin scored that goal. It was fantastic. Its been a long time.

Ok my thoughts on the weekend. And please TTT dont delete my posts if you disagree. You should be embarrassed with your censorship of this board protecting your personal friendship with the head coach.


I have said for years that there should be a division 1 and a division 1A in women's hockey. BC has no chance competing in D1. None. We saw it firsthand 2 weeks ago. Wisconsin, Minnesota, OSU, Duluth and maybe a few others should play for the D1 championship every year. Could BC ever be a contender again in D1 ? Yes of course but they have a long way to go to try and get there. As far as the 1A division ? BC is right there. Are there any good teams in the east ? Clarkson, Qpac, Princeton, Northeastern all look like they have taken a step backwards so clearly a Hockey East title and an NCAA at large bid are clearly on the table. Hockey East has never looked worse nationally but the good news is that the league has never been this even.


The POSITIVES
  • BC has 2 lines that can play with anyone in 1A. When 28/21 play like they care it makes a big difference.
  • BC has 4 D that are as good a unit as anyone in 1A.
  • Kinger actually coached to win. She never does that. The more the top 2 lines and the top 4 D play the better. They have too many players that just aren't good enough. Sorry but its the truth. No more playing your buddies kids please.
  • Campbell is great. Was the best player on the ice all weekend. I think Callaway is legit as well and we need to see more of her.
The NEGATIVES
  • Clarkson is not very good. No way they are #3 team in US. They benefitted from a great finish last year and an easy early schedule so far this year. I was shocked actually at how bad they were.
  • Clarkson needs a goalie. Badly.
  • not sure how we can lose to Holy Cross and get a lucky goal to beat Merrimack and then beat Clarkson 2X but after another lousy game this upcoming weekend (Merrimack) the HE schedule starts to pick up with I think Maine, BU, UConn, NU, PC. Those games should tell us a lot about this BC team.

Got any pics from the weekend to share? Sadly living 2.5 hours away severely cuts into how often I can get up to Conte to watch in person. Someday perhaps we will cross paths.

Definitely agree on there being a 1 and a 1A right now, the big 4 out west are in their own world. Fortunately that sort of thing has been a little bit cyclical over time. We're in a different world now with the transfer portal, but hopefully they come back to earth over the next few years.

I just strongly believe that BCWIH should be competing in that D1 division that I referenced every year. The last 5-6 years have been unacceptable. If you weren't buddy buddy with the head coach I know you would be in total agreement with me.

One of the best parts of following the team over the years (18 years, not 1.5 years) has been getting to know other fans and family members and players in the BCWH community. It's a small but tight-knit group. You should say hello sometime instead of being all "no-really-I-definitely-go-to-the-games-I-swear" and sitting like a hermit in the corner.

Ah I stand corrected! I thought I saw a mention of this after the game, but maybe it was the first time under Coach Crowley or something or I otherwise misunderstood. I know we swept UMD several years ago, they might have been top 5 at the time... Could have been some other good weekend vs. NU or BU when they were good in there somewhere. Don't think we ever did against UNH back when they were good. I'll have to dive through the old schedules.

Ok Maybe I should wear a 10 year old game jersey that barely fits like you do for the 1 game you show up for all year and stand behind the net and jump up and down and make a complete fool of yourself like you do ? That looks like a lot of fun. I see a lot of the 10 year old kids do that at the games but i don't see too many 30 year old BC grads acting like that.

Enough with the personal attacks TTT. I know its a sensitive subject for you but you're better than that

I was right about the UMD sweep being over a top 5 team, woo go me. I don't see a second one but definitely might have overlooked it reading on my phone. Closest other one I found was a sweep over #6 NU (unless you meant this was the second time -- either way you were right, this wasn't the first time we've done it).
