BC Women's Hockey 2024-2025: Embrace The Chaos

Been a while since we beat up on a bad team eh?

The grind starts next week, Maine isn't anything special but road games up there are tough.

7 in a row! We're cooking. Two games up in Maine is always tough, even if Maine is no good 6 points was great to see.

BU will be a good test.

The two of you are keeping the BC thread going and that's a good thing. A number of team threads have gone dark.

In my experience a supermajority of fans who come to the forum are parents who then drift away after their kid graduates (understandable, I'm not judging, I get it). Once in a while we pick up a unicorn long-timer or get a visit from a casual who pops back in when the team is doing well. Or when the team is doing poorly lol...

It's a relatively niche community.

Hey I don't care who we beat 7 in a row is 7 in a row so lets enjoy it while we can. BC has clearly gotten better as a team since the Holy Cross debacle so lets give Kinger some credit here.

Here is where I am with the season so far. I have watched every team play at least 1X and BC is as good as any team in Hockey East. Winning the league is the goal. As weak as the league is this year I don't care we need it badly. It looks like there are 4 good teams in Hockey East this year, BC, BU NU and UConn. We play all these teams over the next few weeks so stay tuned. We will learn a lot about this BC team over the next few weeks.

As I have been saying BC top 2 lines, their top 5 D and goalie are as good as anyone. Kinger seems to have finally stopped playing all of these players that shouldn't ever be on the ice at BC and it has made a huge difference. I remember watching Brian Durocher with Poulin and Dave Flint with Mueller and they seemed to never come off the ice ! Keep your best players on the ice coach it makes a big big difference.

AYYYY someone paid the USCHO bill, the lights are back on!

Eagles are so back. Win tomorrow plz.

PS TV folks were saying that was BC's first time ever playing at Agganis. Neat.

Much less good today, we played pretty well early (the Goulding goal was an absolute snipe, possible shot of the year candidate) but starting roughly with the disorganized scramble in the 2nd where BU got two quick ones we just looked a bit a mess. The 8 game win streak was big though and the split with BU was about what you'd expect.

Now we get UConn next week and you can probably pencil the road game in as a loss because I'm going to be there and I'm a curse.

I didn't see much of Fridays game but I was there Saturday and to be honest I wish I wasn't there. BC was outplayed all night long and the ice was tilted most of the game. BU was very good and they deserve a lot of credit but BC really had nothing going all game with the exception of the Goulding goal. The 3rd BU goal late in the game was an absolute killer. Just horrendous defense at a critical time in the game. How do you give up a breakaway there ? Again a very questionable coaching decision with a player on the ice who just has no business being out there. The BC top 6 has to be better in games like that. BC Goalie is just terrific.

Shots 35-22 UConn makes absolutely no sense, that was as good as we've looked all year. LET'S GO.

Sharpie in the loss tomorrow when I'm at the game though. I'm emotionally prepared for it, it's fine.

Just got back. Yea. Nice win today against a good UConn team. BC is a good team there is no doubt about it they are good. I think they are the second best team in Hockey east. I haven't seen Northeastern yet.

For those of you that are wondering why I am not more excited about a team that has won 9 out of its last 10 games i don't know what to say. If there is where you think BC needs belongs as a hockey team than you must be pretty happy. I just don't think they are a very good team this year. Can they win HE ? Of course. Can they make the NCAA tournament? Of course. But bottom line is they just aren't a very good team. Hockey East is a complete embarrassment as a conference. UConn was so average . Sorry but we have no chance at competing for a NCAA championship. None. And that stinks. Can they get there in another year or 2 ? I don't know. Can any of these good BC players compete and make a USA National team ? Maybe although I think the door is closing quickly on 9, 18 14 etc. They just don't seem to be getting better playing in this conference.

Sorry but I think BCWIH should be competing for an NCAA championship every year. Yes I do. And we just aren't close right now

I'm less impressed with NU than I am with UConn and BU. Too early to say on them but their offense really seems to be a struggle this year.

I mean I get it. There was a time in the 2017+ range where I was completely unimpressed with anything short of a Frozen Four. Hockey East, Beanpot, whoopie, I didn't care. It sucks to have had to realign hopes and expectations but if I hadn't I'd have been miserable watching the team, because a national title was (and still is) so important to me. And I don't want to be miserable watching the team, because I like watching them. I think you can set reasonable expectations for the current season while hoping for longer-term improvement back to the top.

But I mean... it's just where we are right now. We aren't an NCAA title contender right now. But we are a Hockey East and Beanpot contender, and winning trophies is hard and I've learned to appreciate it even though we're not good enough right now to win the one trophy I want out of all the teams I follow in sports.

The teams in the east cannot compete with the big four out west right now, though that doesn't really address the fact that the ECAC has left WHEA in the dust. It's a league-wide thing at the moment. I don't know the answer, but BU couldn't get it done during their run with Poulin, BC couldn't get it done with their run with Carpenter, and NU couldn't get it done in their run with Mueller. It's been oddly cyclical in this league over the years, but nobody has filled the most recent void yet to be WHEA's one dominant team and load up on easy wins and get a good spot in the Pairwise to try to make a run.

They just don't seem to be getting better playing in this conference.
This is definitely true and probably a big reason we lost the final in 2016 and why BU and NU couldn't do it when they got to a final either.

In any case... we're only halfway through this difficult stretch of the schedule. We looked bad-bad in the second BU game, but looked as good as we have in a while against UConn tonight. Largely it's been more the latter than the former this year. Hard not to call it an improvement on last year so far. I'll take the progress. And if we can get to the winter break sitting in an at-large NCAA tournament spot in the Pairwise, I'll be pretty thrilled.

Okay desperate times call for desperate measures. I am changing up a couple things to try to break my attendance curse:

(1) Different hat (my new Australian Rules Football hat, to help turn things 'upside down')

(2) Wearing my wife's maroon BC jersey (all my jerseys are gold or white) which I've never worn before. Reggie will appreciate that her jersey is smaller than mine. He's a man who appreciates a good fit; I respect it.

We will soon learn if I've done enough.

I think I did it TTT........IYKYK. GO BC!

Okay takeaways:

I swear to God I need to stop going to these games because my presence is clearly a hindrance. I'm also pretty sick of Toscano Family Ice Forum in general. I think BC is like 1-4-1 or something between all the men's and women's games I've gone to there since it opened (including twice in the past week). F this place.

Weird game and really not in a good way. Let's get it out there from the start that overall I didn't think we played very well. But it was also weird because I think we sat back a lot. I don't think it did us a lot of good though because it gave UConn a lot of possession and totally kneecapped our offense.

Here's the positive takeaway I got from the game: Our D really is quite good, and I know Reggie has shouted them out recently as well. In particular they are very sharp and creative at getting the puck to an open player and breaking out of their own end. That part of our game was very nice to watch.

But once we hit the neutral zone... I don't know if it was just a byproduct of us sitting back or if we just were having that much of a bad day overall or if UConn just adjusted that well to muddy things up, but it was like we didn't know wtf to do with the puck once we got to the red line. The dump and chase I think resulted in sustained BC possession exactly zero times all game, but we were forced to do it so often because getting it into the offensive zone any other way was not happening all night.

Most frustrating of all though was when we DID get across UConn's blue line, we both lacked the same creativity showed by the D on the back end AND lacked any desire whatsoever to PUTTTTT THE PUCK ON FREAKING NETTTTTTTTT. OH MY GOD. Especially with the offense really not getting anything going, most of the time our best chances came from the frustratingly few times we threw the puck into the mixer and chased rebounds. I lost track of how many times we finally got some space on zone entry, and then inexplicably dipsy-doodled the puck to the perimeter with a couple passes that either didn't connect or took us further from the net.

We really, desperately, need to shoot more. It explains why the shots were so lopsided Friday despite us playing so well.

Other thoughts:

-Man, I really don't know where this version of Grace Campbell came from but she has been playing like a total megastar for weeks now.

-I haven't decided yet on whether I like us splitting up all our best players over 3 lines, but (tonight's offensive struggles aside) I think I do. There have been some positive effects from this like Goulding playing the best hockey of her career as well as just us generally looking like we've got 3 really solid lines...

-...but, one of the downsides is it feels like Newhook has really not made her presence felt these last couple weeks, and I wonder if she could use a bit of a line shakeup. We will go as far as she takes us this year and need her spark back pronto.

Northeastern next. We need a win in this one.

Agree with TTT just a bad loss. The top of the league is so close this year I hate seeing BC lose some of these very winnable games. UConn is so beatable. I'm not going to blame Kinger for the loss but man do we always seem to find a way to lose these close games.

No idea what is going on with the offense. They have very little sustained offensive zone time. Its always a 1 and done and lets go back and play defense. Its hard to watch what is going on with 21 and 28. They both seem like they have lost interest in playing hockey. This is not the first time I have seen a 5th year come back at BC and you would think they would dominate and that simply doesn't happen. BC has as good as any forward group in the league and they need to start showing it.

The 5 BC defenseman and the goalie continue to be really good. I would like to see them get more involved in the offensive zone. We need more offensive zone time ! #19 might have the hardest shot I have ever seen ! (Yes and that includes Megan Keller !) We need to see more of it

HUGE game vs Northeastern. I think its on NESN actually. Needles to say NU has been beating the crap out of us for too long and its time for someone to take the HE title away from them finally. It really should be us.

UConn won both titles last year. I guess it was just more Huskies by another name.

TTT, for some reason, it seems UCONN is a thorn in BCs side. Even the year way back (I think your first year at BC), when BC went to their first FF, UConn beat BC twice that season. So, it's not you. I think it's just the adrenaline UConn had when they would play BC. We tied them a few times too.
