Any chance the Penn State scandal has an impact on hockey?

Re: Any chance the Penn State scandal has an impact on hockey?

Dont know. Some analysts are calling this worse than a death penalty.
Worse for who? I'd be interested in a fuller version of that comment.

Just thinking out loud, I suppose it's possible that Football might bounce back more quickly if they could take one year off and then be done with it. But for the rest of the sports (other than Basketball) an immediate 100% loss of all Football revenue could be catastrophic. Would all the non-revenue sports get a one year death penalty by default? I really don't know. But I highly doubt that any taxpayer dollars would be available to replace the lost funds.

The actual penalties seem designed to limit the most extreme collateral damage. Financially it's going to be a prolonged struggle for the other programs, but at least it won't be capital punishment for the innocent.

I don't think it is worse for the fans nor the local businesses that rely on those home football weekends for a large chunk of their annual revenues. The fans still have games to go to (we'll see how many are true PSU football fans vs. those that are only fans of winning PSU football teams) and those businesses have those fans eating, sleeping, hanging out in town that they would lose with a death penalty.

Re: Any chance the Penn State scandal has an impact on hockey?

Agreed. As a preliminary matter, I have my doubts as to whether "no cuts to other sports" is really enforceable. But even assuming that it is, I've got to believe that all PSU sports are looking at a pay freeze and a hiring freeze for the full five years. Getting any new budget item approved will probably be close to mission impossible. I'm not against the fine, but there's no question that countless innocent people will be hurt by it. Their only crime? Penn State was their employer or potential employer.
If the sanctions do result pay freezes and hiring freezes, those will be decisions of Penn State, not inevitable consequences of the sanctions. To my knowledge, there is nothing in the consent decree that requires Penn State to institute pay or hiring freezes. I agree that innocent people will get hurt, but not by "it", if by "it" you mean the sanctions. The "it" that will hurt them are actions of Penn State, both in decisions they made since at least 1998 and in decisions they make in the future.

Based on 6K per night @ Pegula x 20 home games can the men's hockey team be self sufficient??

Not if they have to support the boat anchor that the women's team will be. Men's hockey shouldn't be looked at by itself, it has to be grouped with women's hockey, without one, you can't have the other.

I'm sure you're correct about the consent decree. No doubt that it's up to Penn State to come up with the particulars. I was talking about consequences in practical terms. And when you hit an institution with financial penalties this hard, I'd argue that consequences for little guy are virtually inevitable.

Why? In a severe budget crunch, fairness has very little to do with who gets the limited resources. The power to push back usually determines who wins, or at least who loses less.

At the same time, the NCAA actually deserves some credit for taking this factor into account. Trying to protect the non-revenue sports from outright cuts evidences that they took the collateral damage issue seriously. Absent that restriction, I can easily imagine that substantial across the board cuts would have been made to fund the fine payments, to the great detriment of the non-revenue sports. Instead, PSU officials are now talking about using Athletics Department reserve funds and taking out loans. Do you think that those actions will be taken to fund pay raises or new hires for non-revenue sports? I don't. Not because there's a specific provision it in the decree, but because that's how budgetary politics works.

Still, if the immunity from draconian cuts holds, that's half a loaf for the little guy.

Considering Michigan has lost $$ on hockey some years, and they don't even have a woman's program to carry, I sincerely doubt it.

Hockey isn't a consistent revenue sport for anyone other than Minnesota.

Even in this thread you have to beat your chest about Minnesota?

Re: Any chance the Penn State scandal has an impact on hockey?

I wouldn't be surprised if programs like BC and NoDak generate revenue for their school's athletic departments as well, but who knows...

UND does but it's fun to watch JDubbs make silly statements.

LynahFan;5475959Sandusky's trial established many facts which prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Paterno said:
That's just not true, and potentially libelous. The trial established that Sandusky committed heinous crimes. There is very, very little evidence that Joe Paterno engaged in an active conspiracy.

There was enough that the former director of the FBI thought it necessary to put it in his official report on the subject. That is pretty ****ing.

NoDak is pretty consistently in the black. They don't make as much as Minnesota (no one does), but they do make money. Not sure when they became a Big Ten team though (which is what my statement and this thread concerns). Nice try though ;)

BC I am unsure of, and care very little about. And again, not a Big Ten team. Wouldn't surprise me either way.

Re: Any chance the Penn State scandal has an impact on hockey?

No, this thread is not about the Big Ten. This thread is about Penn State. This thread is no more about the Big Ten than the Minnesota thread is about the Big Ten.

And you made no indication you were only referring to Big Ten teams, so there is no nice try. I am correct. Your failure to grasp the topic of this thread does not change this.

No, this thread is not about the Big Ten. This thread is primarily about Penn State. This thread is no more about the Big Ten then the Minnesota thread is about the Big Ten. And you made no indication you were only referring to Big Ten teams, so there is no nice try. I am correct.

Sure it is. Penn State is a Big Ten team, and the sanctions effect the Big Ten. Count the number of posts that talk about how this will effect the BTHC.

I am right. I always am ;)

And yes, my post was in concern to Big Ten teams. Shouldn't you be more concerned that your team's new conference is so poorly ran that it's official website's domain expired almost two weeks ago and has been down since that time with not more than a peep?

Maybe we should be taking wagers on how long until the NCHC folds? No wonder your program is losing recruits to the CHL at a rapid pace :)
