Re: All Things DU XXV - Murray Up and Get The Chevy Out of The Repair Shop

I'm pretty sure that I can summarize the shirtless guy's thoughts as follows:

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Apparently the guy was sent down to section 18 by the AD on his quest for body paint. No doubt he was on some sort of black op mission to infiltrate DG's inner circle.

Interesting Denver Cup obervations from a BC fan:

http://board.uscho.com/showpost.php?p=4546791&postcount=658

Interesting observations. His kudos to Maiani are appreciated, as Anthony played very well. But if the BC fan thinks Maiani was the best player on the ice, I wonder if he missed Rakhshani taking over the game in the 3rd period.

Also, as to the Denver nightlife being dull: maybe it was a quiet weekend in Denver. But I suspect he was hanging out in the wrong places if he was at Choppers and the Twisted Kilt!

Good points on the BC fans. They did make some noise. Though it seemed like the BC chanters were trying to lower their voices several octaves to make themselves sound more manly. Is that an east coast thing???

Also good to read the BC fan's comments about Denver as a tough-to-beat team. The promising thing, though, is that these Pios have an extra gear that they haven't even hit yet. If they hit that gear in March and April, watch out.

Re: All Things DU XXV - Murray Up and Get The Chevy Out of The Repair Shop

I don't want to see DU replicate Pepsi Center in terms of our game night. We're not the NBA, NHL or even Minor league hockey. There are plenty of cookie cutter generic sports experiences out there with canned music, dumb promotions and non-stop action, designed for people with no attention spans.

We are an elite COLLEGE hockey program at an elite UNIVERSITY in a unique City and State. Our game night experience should replicate the University of Denver experience. It should be:

Collegiate - it should look, sound and feel collegiate. What is collegiate? It's DU fight songs, DU band, Student chants, DU sprit groups, DU history photos and videos, DU alumni, DU mascots, DU groups singing anthems, DU kids on the ice in between periods, recognition of other DU sports and other DU groups, DU students having a good time, DU trivia, DU memorabilia, DU giveways, DU colors, etc.

Denver and Colorado: AS well as collegiate, we need a more of a sense of place, referencing where we are - references to altitude, Colorado (Rocky Mountain Way, etc.), Colorado foods, ski and snow experiences, etc.

What we don't need: Generic stuff that could be 'any arena USA'. If it isn't about DU, Colorado or Denver, I don't think we need it.

Yup. There seeme to be an improvement here. We don't seem to be running away from our history and traditions as much as before. But a lot of work still remains. The powers that be would never agree that the CC Sucks banner was a highlight, but it was. They would never think the carrying of the coffin was a highlight, but it was (and I was there for that one) and the spontaneous display for the UMD boy who'd been felled by a stroke was a marvelous moment (and I was there for that one, too). These are "collegiate" moments.

The most arresting sports image this year for me was the shot of Tim Tebow, in tears as the 'Gators lost the SEC championship game, with an African American teammate stroking his head, consoling him. THAT was a collegiate moment.

As I say, we've evidently moved past chancellors who think they've got the power to get rid of the D-Rah and other inexcusable nonsense. We need to continue the efforts of so many of our posters in encouraging the administration. The whole "Boone" thing is beyond great. I get reminded of budgetary constraints every time I bring up memorializing our immortals. While that may be the reality, it doesn't mean we shouldn't put it on the to do list.

I want Magness to reflect what Swami says: an elite program at an elite institution. Exactly. I want recruits and guests to get the powerful aroma of history, tradition and success when they walk in the place. Part of that would involve increased visibility for the pep band. And while I'm at it, we have an Alma Mater too, let's get that into the mix. It's always a great moment at big time college football games when the players (win or lose)stand before the student section for their alma mater. "She's the pride of Colorado, Hail to Denver U."

Somebody's doing some good video work for DU--The 60th Anniversary piece was great, and there are a couple I've found on YouTube that are also outstanding. More Please.

Seems like we're moving in the right direction. Just gotta keep up the pressure. And a tip of the hat to those who've done so much to help move us forward.

Great points.

I was able to meet a lot of DU hockey fans this weekend that had no direct affiliation with the university. Their stories seemed to have a constant theme. Former Avs fans who came to a DU game and got caught up with the excitement of college hockey.

But it also explains the biggest challenge facing the athletic department. These people are there for the hockey. They have ZERO interest in other DU sports. Unless the Athletic Department can create a sense "community" at these games and then transpose the game night experience to DU's other sports, hockey will thrive and everything else will flounder.

If DU thinks they can draw 6,000 per night for hoops or lax, just because DU hockey sells out. They are clearly mistaken.

Its very similar to many college football fans. They are there for the football, nothing else. I flew through Phoenix last night and met a couple of Boise State football fans heading to the Fiesta Bowl. They knew everything about the team & players, present and past. I asked one of them, how many students went to Boise State? They didn't have a clue.

Agreed. In my day b'ball was played in the field house and they still didn't draw as many as my high school. And they were playing some well known schools, Marquette, CSU, New Mexico, BYU etc. So whether we like it or not at DU it's hockey. . . . . . . .and everything else. LAX may grow and get some attention, but hockey is going to be king, no matter what. That's neither good nor bad, just the way it is. So the effort should be to make the environment at hockey games as exciting as possible. We've got to keep those hockey fans coming (including students), and paying money and some of 'em donating, too. If there's any spillover that benefits other sports, that's lagniappe.

It will help all of the sports if the university funds the PR department. We'll see if that happens or not...

Personally, I'm glad DU is known as a hockey school with skiing coming in second. It makes sense to people here on the East coast as they picture Denver as a winter wonderland. It's fitting that a Colorado school would put an emphasis on winter related sports. This is also my own personal bias though. I have no patience for bball and consider hockey a vastly superior sport. On another note, I got to say that after all those lean years (late eighties to the late nineties) for our program it is just so cool to see our team flourish year after year. When you think of the big picture, we really have nothing to complain about!!

Re: All Things DU XXV - Murray Up and Get The Chevy Out of The Repair Shop

While we all agree that DU is a hockey school first, there are enormous financial rewards out there for making the men's NCAA hoops tourney, which is something that might happen this year or perhaps next year, given DU's upward trajectory in that sport under Joe Scott. From a national visibility standpoint, just one or two wins in the NCAA hoops tourney generates several times the visibility of an NCAA hockey title.

Having a higher basketball RPI is a crucial piece of the puzzle in getting out of the Sun Belt conference and into a more appropriate conference, especially since DU doesn't have football.

Additionally, if they can get basketball to about 4,000 fans a game, it starts to make money in its own right. Today, hoops gets 1,500 to 2,000 on average. If they keep winning, the fans will come.

And while I, like Dmann am not a big basketball fan, it really would be nice if there were two money-generating sports. It would be pretty awesome to get into the national tournament.

Lean years. A huge understatement for DU hockey. There were seasons where the final series with CC would determine last place in the conference! A variety of factors are responsible for where we find ourselves today--an elite team that must always be taken into consideration in any discussion of who's going to win the NC.

Having restored hockey to its rightful place, I see no problem with trying to upgrade other sports (particularly basketball because of the revenue potential). Under the Pritchard/Oyer administration we tried downgrading everything except hockey and women's gymnastics. Disaster all 'round. So let's try the other way: work to improve all sports. I'm pleasantly surprised at the improvement in basketball and it's clear we're trying to move up in lax. Certainly it's great for marketing DU that the ski team is back on top.

Coincidentally (or perhaps not) those east coast students also like basketball and hockey. I think they can get excited about both. As for the community, I think we can expect more butts at basketball games when/if the program gets more visibility. Swami's right, a tournament berth would be worth its weight in gold and credibility.

Bottom line: I don't think working to improve our visibility in other sports hurts hockey. In fact, a higher national profile in other sports would probably help recruiting, and certainly wouldn't hurt it.

Looking for a fun roadtrip?

See the University of Denver play at the Wisconsin Badgers (Jan. 22-23) in the Kohl Center. The DU Alumni Association in Chicago are planning on attending the games and a half dozen DU fans from Denver have already booked their airfares.

Airtran has $168 internet airfares from Denver to Milwaukee available on its website. Milwaukee is about an hour east of Madison.

Midwest Airlines has $300 airfares between Denver & Madison with stops in Milwaukee.

That was one heck of a game. Very fun to watch so much talent on the ice for both teams. I'm so glad USA pulled it out in OT after giving up two goals in the last 3 or 4 minutes of the game.
