Re: All Things DU XXV - Murray Up and Get The Chevy Out of The Repair Shop

I wish I had a few more days off so I could be at this weekend's games. Time in Denver seems to go by too quickly.

Re: All Things DU XXV - Murray Up and Get The Chevy Out of The Repair Shop

Congrats to Paul Stastny for making the 2010 US Olympic Hockey team. Stats is the first DU hockey player on an American Olympic team since 1972 when Ron Naslund won a silver medal in Sapporo, Japan with Team USA. DU has had many Canadian Olympians, as well as Finnish and Italian Olympians since then in hockey, but DU American Olympic players have been few and far between.

Of course DU did produce Craig Patrick, who won Gold (1980) as an assistant coach and in 2002 (silver) as the GM of Team USA.

Where is the "Official" game day post?

Denver looks awesome! The pios & Nodak look to be head & shoulders better than everyone else.

Re: All Things DU XXV - Murray Up and Get The Chevy Out of The Repair Shop

I think Denver has to be very pleased with the weekend. They dominated UNO from the drop of the puck, and didn't show signs of vacation rust or missing Donovan at the WJCs. A 7-0 blow out was exactly the kind of stress-free walkover that DU hasn't had very many of this season.

Then, on Saturday, DU showed some great resilience, character and pride to storm back to victory after a flat start to overtake an excellent BC team in the third period. This victory was by sheer force of will - the refusual to go quietly into the night after the shorty by BC to establish a a 3-1 lead would have broken a lot of good teams. I think Rakhshani, if there was ever any doubt, has now stamped this team with his quality of play, his captainship and his drive for leadership that is the difference between good teams and exceptional ones. If this season turns out to be a special one, I think the BC game will be one of those "I knew it when" moments where the team could finally grasp the combination of its talent and its character to establish a team identity.

Now, this DU team still has a lot of hurdles in front of it, including some difficult road environments in places like Madison and Grand Forks. They also still have to learn to play consistently, especially on Saturdays. The slow start against BC continues a bad pattern that could be very costly if not corrected somehow. Gwoz says he has some ideas to change this, and let's hope he's got something to fix it. That's why he gets paid the big bucks to solve these issues.

As for players, I think Maiani's terrific game against UNO was nice to see - he was struggling a lot before the break. He's a game-breaker that DU needs very much to score, especially if Gwoz keeps stacking the top line of Rakhshani, Ruegsegger and Colborne (I line I like very much, BTW). I also loved Drew Shore's efforts this weekend, winning key faceoffs and using his speed to present problems. He's still needs to learn more about gap control and finishing chances, but he's developing well. Salazar continues to struggle to make an impact, and I'm not sure if they can continue to wait for him.

Defensively, I thought Ryder and Nutini had a great tourney - you expect that from guys like Wiercioch and Lee, but not from walk ons, and these two have been difference makers, filling the holes while scholarship guys like Phillips and Wrenn are learning to play it this level. Nice to see Brookwell score vs UNO and play well too. Cody is a senior with a lot of pride, and he's had a hard time this year getting PT with the promises that have been made to the freshmen. He's handling it well, and I am sure his efforts are appreciated in the locker room with his teammates. He'll be needed down the stretch, when experience is at a premium.

Re: All Things DU XXV - Murray Up and Get The Chevy Out of The Repair Shop

Great weekend and win on Saturday.

Ruegs really made that 3rd goal happen. Watched the replay this morning and he went into that crease like a man possessed. Battled 2 or 3 BC players and the goalie for the puck, I don't think he ever touched the puck, but kept the play alive long enough for Rock to come in and poke it in.

Gwoz used a third line of Shore, S. Ostrow, and Glasser in the 3rd. I thought this line was great and I'd like to see Gwoz stick with it. Going into the second half of the season I think it is time to start solidifying the lines. I'd go with:

Rock, Ruegs, Colborne
Maiani, Martin, Mini Dingle
S. Ostrow, Shore, Glasser
Vossberg, Gifford, Salazar/Knowlton

My top six D-men are: Weircioch, Donovan, Nutini, Ryder, Lee and Brookwell. Wrenn and Phillips are real close to being in my top 6 but I'll give the nod to the more experienced players.

Lastly, does Murray get a start this weekend? If so, start him on Friday.

Like the idea of giving Murray a Friday start--when the team is playing best.
Lee and Knowlton have been 2 pleasant surprises this year. Nutini has stepped up his play and I like to see Ryder on the ice.

D-Rah to Brookwell on his 2nd career goal. He also had good weekend overall.

AO*--Rakhshani, Ruegsegger and Colborne

*According to Mike Chambers, Absolutely Outstanding

I would hate to see Gwoz gamble with the momentum that has been established.Ride the Chevy!!!

Re: All Things DU XXV - Murray Up and Get The Chevy Out of The Repair Shop

No, no, no, no, no. Murray doesn't (shouldn't) get a start against a league opponant. Talk to me about Mercyhurst and I'll listen. We've got to learn if this kid has what it takes to play on this level, but not now, and not when league points are at stake. As Darrel Royal said: "dance with the one who brung you."

I love these 60th anniversary uniforms so much that I think they should become the permanent jersey. Next year, just replace the 60th anniversary logo with a small WCHA patch and it's good to go.

They are way cooler than the regulars, and I like when we wear red at home.

Re: All Things DU XXV - Murray Up and Get The Chevy Out of The Repair Shop

My first post in forever, but I just wanted to say those DU jerseys (the ones that are on USCHO's front page) are freaking gorgeous. Maybe the best new unis I've seen in forever.

Re: All Things DU XXV - Murray Up and Get The Chevy Out of The Repair Shop

What you didn't see last night

John "Big Yellow Truck" Ryder was +3 to lead DU in +/-.

Official box score had Drew Shore scoring the goal originally credited to John Lee. Lee got an assist on the play.

I know Rock got the MVP but I can't find the All Tourney Team. Does anyone know who made the All Tourney Team besides Rock?

Re: All Things DU XXV - Murray Up and Get The Chevy Out of The Repair Shop

Yep, the jerseys are good. Not sure if I'd want them to replace the regular ones....Maybe...

Chevy and Colborne also made the all tourney team. I could be wrong, but I think that the defensemen were from BC and and SLU.

I didn't think that Shore touched Lee's shot. But Shore does deserve a point for all of his good work this weekend. He's looking very good, very tenacious out there. He doesn't have the scorer's touch right now. But, as Gwoz said in the post-game, he's playing hard and making a big difference out there. The points will come for him at some point if he keeps playing like this.

Rahkshani is playing SO amazing right now. One of the most effective DU players in recent memory. I love the fact that he can score both the highlight reel goals, and the dirty goals that result from hard work.

Re: All Things DU XXV - Murray Up and Get The Chevy Out of The Repair Shop

Rhett's tied for 3rd nationally in goals scored. (The first number is games played, and the second is goals scored.)

It's admittedly way too early to talk about it, but Rhett will deserve Hobey consideration if he plays as well in the 2nd half as he has in the 1st half.

1 Corey Tropp, Jr, F, Michigan State 22 17
2 Casey Wellman, So, F, Massachusetts 18 16
3 Blair Riley, Sr, LW, Ferris State 20 15
Rhett Rakhshani, Sr, F, Denver 20 15
5 Blake Geoffrion, Sr, F, Wisconsin 18 14
Chase Polacek, Jr, F, Rensselaer 21 14
7 Mike Testwuide, Sr, RW, Colorado College 17 13

Re: All Things DU XXV - Murray Up and Get The Chevy Out of The Repair Shop

Wells Fargo Denver Cup All Tournament Team

Forward - Rhett Rakhshani - DU - MVP
Forward - Joe Colborne - DU
Forward - Travis Vermeulen - SLU

Defense - Patrick Wiercioch - DU
Defense - Tommy Cross - BC

Goalie - Marc Cheverie - DU

I agree Rhett will be in the running for the Hobey but he will be getting some competition from his team mate Chevy.
