All Things Denver XXXII

Re: All Things Denver XXXII

If everyone recalls in the magical 2003/04 season, the team really struggled in the first half of the year and then Gwoz made some crucial systems adjustments for the second half and the team went on a huge run to the national title
Was that the year the volunteer assistant coach came up with the idea that turned the PP around?

Re: All Things Denver XXXII

How about the Penalty Kill?

Using stats (conference only) from DenverPioneers.com, not the media guide I cobbled together this list:
01-02 - DU 85.3% -
02-03 - DU 77.4% -
03-04 - DU 83.7% -
04-05 - DU 84.4% -(thx '78)
05-06 - DU 82.4% -
06-07 - DU 79.8% -
07-08 - DU 90.2% -
08-09 - DU 87.6% -
09-10 - DU 87.8% -
10-11 - DU 84.6% -
11-12 - DU 77.8% -

Average for last 5 plus seasons=84.6%

From 07-08 thru 10-11 having Mannino, Chevy and Brittain certainly helped.
We also had some pretty fair D-Men on the ice--Chris Butler, Matt Donovan, Patrick Wiercioch for offense and blocking the middle guys like Andy Thomas, JP Testuide and John Ryder. And Tyler Bozak who seemed to love the PK and made a shorty or two along the way. Makowski seems to be the most aggressive D-man on the ice today.

Is it easier to fix the PP or the PK?

84.4% in 04-05 per USCHO WCHA stats

Re: All Things Denver XXXII

Went back and checked USCHO WCHA stats and was surprised that 90.2% wasn't the best in league. We were the best in 09-10 with almost 88%.

Re: All Things Denver XXXII

Going to digress a bit here and touch back on the exciting DU/Iona b-ball game and its coach, Tim Cluess. I grew up around the block from the Cluesses and went to grade school with all 4 brothers and sister. I have known them since we were all little kids. The basketball games in their driveway were legendary. I knew Kevin the best as he was a year older than me and Mary Ann was a year younger and in my sister's class. Ian O'Connor has written an unbelievable human interest story about this first family of basketball from West Hempstead. For me it brings back all sorts of memories of growing up in the "old" neighborhood where we all played hoops in driveways, the St. Thomas school yard and CYO games in the St. Thomas gym. BTW, Dr. J is mentioned in this story as being a road block to Kevin making it in the pros. Dr. J when he was a kid played more than once in the pick-up games in the schoolyard where we all grew up.

Matt Carle with 3 assists last night

Re: All Things Denver XXXII

Four points from this weekend would be a very good end to a "less than successful" first half.

Re: All Things Denver XXXII

INCH's MidSeason review with a shout out to Jussi and the question,"Will Denver ever be healthy?"
http://insidecollegehockey.com/inch/2011/12/16/wcha_1011/

Good question. And for a few gut wrenching moments last night, it looked like the situation was going to be much worse. It's just hard to understand why so many of our guys seem unable to find the back of the net. This is one of the most comprehensive scoring droughts I can recall. No question Bennett's absence makes a huge difference. Still. . .

Re: All Things Denver XXXII

Clarification from the scoring thread where the St. Cloud announcer said Nick Shore was going to Canada for the WJC. He was on the roster for the 2011 evaluation camp, but is NOT on the roster of 29 for the 2012 WJC tournament.

Re: All Things Denver XXXII

Hey DU fans. Chris Knowlton is on our flight back to Denver. What's up with that? Did the rest of the team leave him behind or something?

Re: All Things Denver XXXII

DU at the break this year is 8-7-3 with 18 games played, exactly half of the regular season. Last season at the break, DU was 12-5-3 with 20 games played. They went 9-5-2 the rest of the season to finish 21-10-5 before the playoffs. To replicate last season's record DU has to go 13-3-2 in the second half. Realisticly to make the NCAAs, you need at least 20 regular season wins. DU has their work cut out for them in the 2nd half of the season.

There are usually a few teams with 18-19 regular season wins (RPI, CC, Western Michigan, New Hampshire last year) that get in as an at-large bid. That being said, getting to 18-20 wins won't require DU to go much better than .500 the rest of the way in. However, if the CCHA continues its strong play OOC over break, and some teams from that conference don't fall in the second half, you could be looking at 5-6 CCHA schools making the NCAAs. If that happens, it most likely cuts down the WCHA's spots to about 3-4. Right now (admittedly way too early to really look at) the CCHA would have 7 teams in the tournament, along with 3 from the WCHA, 4 from Hockey East, 1 from the ECAC and 1 from Atlantic Hockey.

Re: All Things Denver XXXII

News from the U-20 Team USA Camp.
Joining the 26 players who arrived on Friday were Jason Zucker (Denver) and Kevin Gravel (St. Cloud State), who flew into Edmonton this morning after squaring off in WCHA action on Friday and Saturday.

Zucker made an immediate impact upon his arrival, as he scored one of the prettiest scrimmage goals of the camp. The two-year WJC veteran sped around defenseman Stephen Johns on his backhand, cut in front of the net and slammed the puck past the outstretched pad of Gibson for Team Blue’s lone goal in regulation (a four-quarter, running clock affair).
