Re: All Things Denver XXXII

Has anyone found any update on Patrick Wiercoch's injury?

Whatever this means:

"Wiercioch update: Binghamton defenseman Patrick Wiercioch is resting comfortably. He is still under evaluation and according to Binghamton coach Kurt Kleinendorst, he is moving in the right direction."

http://www.examiner.com/binghamton-...lled-on-to-help-binghamton-wiercioch-update-1

This seems to be the most up to date...not really much information, however.

Re: All Things Denver XXXII

Bottom line--Special teams suck. Missing Bennett cannot be the only reason.
DU wins or ties when scoring 3 or more goals.
Hats off to Jussi--hate to think what the score would be without him.

I'm frustrated by the effort put forward by this team tonight. They present as over confident (a sign that they haven't gelled as a team). You've got to know that when you take the first in a series on the road the home team is coming out guns ablazin Saturday. 0-10 on the PP for the weekend. It's the most frustrated I've heard Gwoz all year. Maybe he'll work their asses off this week.

Well, OK...DU didn't just roll over. They played. A sweep in an opposing team's barn is a tough task and lil Serratore is a good coach. Instead of harping on the team (which is Gwoz' job), I choose to give credit where it is due and Bemidji played smart, disciplined hockey in which they earned a solid 2 points for themselves.

It is what it is and it is done, move forward.

The last time DU completely underachieved was '02-03 and this season will not be comparable to that. We may not obtain our somewhat recently attained standard of a 3rd place and up finish, though we still may.

Settle down and channel (the apparent new in thang for DU posters :)) positiveness, enjoy what we have and accept where the boyz go...just remember that we have nothing to do with outcomes and need to show true support for them no matter what. I personally view it like a parent: Love ya if you do, love ya if you don't.

Though, a new PP strategy should be in the works...

GO DU!!!!!!!!!!!

Some of this sounds a lot like CC's effort against UAA Friday night after going up 2-0 early. They acted like it would be easy after that. It's the WCHA...there are NO nights off in this league, and if our teams don't realize that, they'll be bitten in the asses. Wouldn't it be nice for us if our teams played as hard against the rest of the league as they do against each other? ;)

BTW: BRING BACK SWAMI!!! He had more insight on this board than just about anyone, and even as a CC fan, I really miss his input.

Re: All Things Denver XXXII

Swami is dah man. Knows the game inside and out. Amazing last minute win for the Tigers last night.

The Pios are looking like a 500 team right now. 500 in the WCHA means you're on the road for the playoffs and most likely sitting out in March/April. I understand that 2 points on the road is considered a good weekend. The two points we got we're a gift served on a platter to Zucker by the Beavers goalie. Darn lucky to walk away with two. It concerns me that these guys don't come off as more hungry. Still missing the leadership of Kyle Ostrow--the last two years when this team needed a boost KO would pick it up and carry the whole team on his back. I'm not seeing anyone doing anything close to that. Without it we're very likely to perform at the 500 level in the second half. Another thing that concerns me is all the injuries we're dealing with early on. As long as this season is the chances are high that we'll have more in the second half versus less. Lastly, our schedule is brutal in the last 5-6 weeks of the season. We need points.

Re: All Things Denver XXXII

Wiercioch transferred to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse, NY. Makes me think Patty must need specialists for his injury.

Upstate was the only hospital in Syracuse region to be ranked by the news outlet. U.S. News also recognized Upstate for its care in the specialty areas of cancer; ear, nose and throat; kidney disorders; and urology.
From the Upstate web site.

INCH drops Denver to #14 with this comment:
Pretty soon it’ll be easier to list the DU players who aren’t hurt. The latest to go on the shelf is forward Beau Bennett, out a minimum of six weeks with a wrist injury.

I know every team suffers from injuries, but geeeezzz!!! Beau Bennett could have been the difference last Sat. on the PP. I have tried to remain positive about the goalie situation, but I have to that if we had Brittain, we would be doing better right now!

OK, fans, there is a game thread! Feel free to post.

BTW, SCSU is often referred to as Jan Brady State:)

Even though goaltending was a big concern at the beginning of the season, it is not the team's biggest issue. Right now Jussi stands 3rd in the WCHA of all goalies with a 2.3423 GAA. His saves % is 4th best at .910. The team's problem is special teams. The PP is 10th in the league at 19.61% and the penalty kill is 7th at 77.2% Championship teams have PP's that click at about 25% and PKs at 85% or better. If DU can get the special teams clicking (i.e. more scoring and giving up fewer goals on the PK), they should start winning some of these close games. Getting 30 to 40 shots on goal and only scoring 1 or 2 goals is not going to win you many games. You can't rely on the goalie to get a shutout every game. DU has been consistently inconsistent so far this season. The talent is there, the boys just need to step it up a notch.

Good news St. Cloud is 12th on the PP and 10th on the PK:eek:

I don't remember the PP ever being over 20% in the recent past, but don't remember the PK being less than 85%.

Re: All Things Denver XXXII

A look at DU's Power Play from a historical perspective.

  • 01-02 - DU 21.4% - WCHA Leader 32.3%
  • 02-03 - DU 22.0% - WCHA Leader 29.0%
  • 03-04 - DU 18.0% - WCHA Leader 27.4%
  • 04-05 - DU 21.2% - WCHA Leader 25.2%
  • 05-06 - DU 25.4% - WCHA Leader 25.4%
  • 06-07 - DU 15.5% - WCHA Leader 23.5%
  • 07-08 - DU 14.7% - WCHA Leader 21.9%
  • 08-09 - DU 16.9% - WCHA Leader 22.2%
  • 09-10 - DU 21.4% - WCHA Leader 24.8%
  • 10-11 - DU 17.0% - WCHA Leader 23.3%
  • 11-12 - DU 19.6% - WCHA Leader 26.8%

Overall the stats show that DU"s power play has struggled since 2005/06, only averaging 17.5% for the past 5 plus seasons whereas in the previous 5 seasons it averaged 21.6% and led the league in 2005/06 at 25.4%. The league leader has average 23.3% over the past 10 plus seasons. Only once in the past 5 plus seasons has it been over 20% and that was the 2009/10 season with Rakhshani and company. It is no coincidence that the power play excelled in 2004/05 and 2005/06 as it was run by Matt Carle with Paul Stastny upfront. If everyone recalls in the magical 2003/04 season, the team really struggled in the first half of the year and then Gwoz made some crucial systems adjustments for the second half and the team went on a huge run to the national title. The 2004/05 team dominated from day one and went wire to wire for their 2nd title in a row. Time to break out the power play tapes from 2005 and 2006.
