Alaska Nanooks 2015-16 Season Thread - Straight Outta Sanction…

Eh, whatever. Chris Dilks was much more level headed in his response. Stupid play either way, though. I'm kind of surprised Atkinson didn't get a game either.
I understand being upset but c'mon, you're a journalist, maybe tone it down a bit.

And I feel real dirty because I've been like "calm down, UAF isn't that bad..." *shudder*

Lol...

He should be letting MSU handle it with the league, not lobbying on MSU's behalf. This isn't Fox News or CNN.

Several of his mentions also retweeted the vid to the WCHA begging them to do something.

Apparently another of their players were blasted last week at Bemidji. Apparently no call or suspension in that case, so it seems Mr. Shane was a bit of a "Justice Seeker".

In fairness, hes been talking about hits to the head all year starting right after the coaches opening press conference. He also talked about it last year. And he mentioned the uah gam last night. And a game in the aha. I have to say that it's a problem if 3 play happen in the same night that resulted in suspensions and NONE of them were called. This isn't an msu thing, it's a college hockey thing.

Point being don't give everyone lip service about player safety and them don't do anything about hits to the head.it's a big problem to leave that garbage go and then say that you're going to be looking for it and then repeat the process year after year.

If I were a “hockey journalist” and thought I was in a position to bring attention to this hit, I probably would too. And that bonehead move was dangerous and deserved action. Atkinson deserved the 5, but it was nothing like Morley's.

The team was not just frustrated, they were probably embarrassed. It wasn’t like they played a good game and got frustrated because things just didn’t bounce their way. They were out-played in every phase of the game. It was what it was. Refocus for tonight. Despite the two, or what should have been two majors, we weren’t aggressive enough, during 5x5 or during the PK. Can’t sit back against MSU. Go out on them. It may or may not be successful, but at least we are not sitting back and becoming target practice.

Nanook fans, since GCI often has incorrect information in their listings, do you know if your games this weekend are live or tape delay? My GCI guide says they are tape delayed at 10:00 PM. GCI doesn't want to do tape delay for UAA games because they don't want people fast forwarding through the commercials. Just curious why your games, also aired through GCI, would not be live. Thanks for any input.

Probably tape delay. GCI isn't live broadcasting us from what I am aware.

That is really strange. UAA's should be tape delay too, and the word is that GCI wanted the games live. Hmmm.

To the credit of both teams and their coaching staffs, I thought Saturday's game was a hard fought, physical, but very clean game. Ferguson did a nice job making defensive adjustments, particularly on the PK. Also, nice job by the Nanook players doing a stick salute to their fans who made the trip. I don't think I've seen a road team do that in the last couple of years, and in the WCHA, fans deserve credit for traveling to see their team.

Re: Alaska Nanooks 2015-16 Season Thread - Straight Outta Sanction…

Interesting tidbit tucked into the Universities 10 year capital plan approved by the Regents today. Not one single dollar from non-state sources. Just like the Alaska Airlines Center. As I recall, revenue bonds from student fees paid for the UAF rec center years ago, and just recently UAF students had a fee surcharge applied to help pay for the new power plant, for heat & lights for which students were already paying for. I hope this doesn’t get any serious discussion in the next ten years except maybe as an example of audacity in austere times.

UAA Community Arena and Recreational Facility
FY22-FY26 (GF: $120,000.0, NGF: $0.0, Total: $120,000.0)

Although the majority of UAA Athletic programs have relocated to the new Alaska Airlines Center (AAC) in 2014, the UAA Hockey Team locker rooms and practice ice rink remain in the Wells Fargo.

14 Approved as Amended by BOR 11/04/2015
FY2017-FY2026 Capital Budget Request Project Descriptions
Sports Center (WFSC) at the core of the UAA Campus.

The WFSC facility is designated for replacement by a new building accommodating Student Support Services and an expanded Student Union in the 2013 Campus Master Plan. A new facility will be required to support the UAA Hockey Team prior to the demolition of the WFSC facility. Additionally, due to concerns of holding matches at the multi-purpose, city-owned Sullivan Arena where UAA Hockey games now take place, the new UAA facility will incorporate a competition ice arena capable of seating 3000 to 4000 fans.

WOW. Didn't see that coming!

Are you really that surprised? UAA has been blowing smoke about another new sports facility ever since they decided not to put ice in their current palace. Meanwhile the UA system is looking at another budget cut likely as bad or worse as this year, but hey, let's get state to blow money on another new arena that serves one campus!

Looking on the bright side, I doubt this will see the light of day under our current governor unless UAA covers some of the cost itself instead of leeching off the state.

Re: Alaska Nanooks 2015-16 Season Thread - Straight Outta Sanction…

I'm not surprised that UAA feels entitled to an on campus arena, I'm just surprised that it even made it into the 10 year plan. The next phase will be to listen to them complain about how short sighted the Regents are, and how they really deserve a $180m 8,000 capacity arena. How many venues for boy band concerts and quiche bake-offs does one town need?

Your neighbor (Bristol's Kids Grandma) put the ax to a duel arena a few years ago.

I am sure UA_ could play all their games on Tuesday & Wednesday if they asked nicely,

He said to make it fair he will ok it as anchorage didn't get multi millions of dollars worth of "free" wood stoves like all of parasites in _airbanks got.

If they want another arena then that's great, good for them. Just don't ask the state to foot the bill when the UA system is being forced to shed academic programs left and right because of the budget crisis. Enact student fees, find private funding or a P3 partnership instead. Or better yet, work with the Muni to replace Sullivan Arena. In the meantime, I bet Dermot Cole has a field day with this in the ADN.

The state has done more than its part in the last 20 years to build up UAA, and a lot of that has come at a direct expense of UAF. The garbage argument of "Regents hate UAA and are just pouring money into that northern icebox because it would die otherwise" became stale years and years ago. UAA has the academic and sports facilities it needs to become a major school. It's past time they learn to start flying solo on some of these capital projects.

A has-been politician not currently in office and wood stoves? ***?

They will, right after the Regents relocate the "Flagship" to Anchorage.

Re: Alaska Nanooks 2015-16 Season Thread - Straight Outta Sanction…

The new arena news is absolutely fantastic news. I do think it should be 8,000 seats "for future growth in Division I." However, I am kind of surprised that this made it to the 10 year capital planning. If anything, I would have thought UAF would have gotten a new arena first. But, in the same document, it says that the Patty Center will be refurbished. Not sure to what extent though!

UAA will get a second rink before UA_ gets its third.
