Alaska Nanooks 2015-16 Season Thread - Straight Outta Sanction…

Re: Alaska Nanooks 2015-16 Season Thread - Straight Outta Sanction…

Thanks for the link. One statement really baffled me, however. I don't mean this in a mean spirited way, but we all know support for Nanook hockey has really dwindled over the years, much as it has for UAA. Does rifle really have a "huge" following in Fairbanks?

Given our local economy, most things have dwindled over the last ten years, including attendance at Nanook games. But in the grand scheme of local activities, “hockey”, including the Nooks, Ice Dogs, High School, and youth hockey, is still a pretty big deal and draw.

Rifle has been a very successful and “respected” sport at the collegiate level, and has a real niche following in many interior communities and high schools. But almost zero fan attendance (but definitely no hecklers in the crowd :) ) Rifle is kind of the epitome of a sport for Alaskans, at least in spirit if not in fact. It would be like Hawaii dropping surfing or UND dropping lawn mower tossing.

I think the WCHA move had as much of an effect on attendance as anything else. Having Michigan, Sparty, Ohio State and Notre Dame coming to the Interior every year pulled in a lot of casual fans as well as alums of those schools. I still remember flying up to FAI for the playoff series against OSU in 2009 and the plane being full of Buckeye fans.

As for Rifle, it's probably worth noting that the NCAA had record attendance when they held the Rifle championships in Fairbanks. It's a niche sport, but very well funded via scholarships and also has 10 national championships. UAF won't ever let that one go easily.

I think at the very least, they will cut maybe one or two sports at UAA but keep both UA and UAA with Division II status and the hockey teams. So, I believe that would be a relief.

Strategic Pathways report is out on Athletics. The time to start sending emails of support would be now.

Do you have a link Squarebanks? I'm not finding anything current.

Edit: I assume THIS is what you are referring to.

I just read the report and I don't know if I like any of the options. I like the option to buy the Carlson Center though for UAF!
