Alaska Nanooks 2015-16 Season Thread - Straight Outta Sanction…

Win!!!!!!!!
Congratulations Tyler Morley on 101 points!! A great game with some crazy moments, Sparrows goal standing behind the goalie and trying to figure out why they were waving off the goal from Taylor Munson with the goalie out of the net. Let's go for 4-0 at home tomorrow!

Re: Alaska Nanooks 2015-16 Season Thread - Straight Outta Sanction…

Nice win tonight over a team that usually gives us fits at home. The team skated well for the most part with some strong individual performances.

But we also won the first game last year 3-0 and then laid an egg and lost the second game 1-4. Two years ago we won the first game 5-4 but lost the second game 1-2. We can’t afford to split at home. Buckle your helmets boys and get the sweep.

If we stay aggressive and play like the first two periods tonight we’ll be OK. If we sit back and try to protect a lead or play like we’re hoping not to lose, then once again we could end up splitting at home.

Go Nooks!

And there's the ubiquitous NMU home split.

This season is reminding me of '13-'14 so far. That year's team had some similar early season issues.

Whoooooohooooo!! What a game!! 3rd time this season UAF has come back from a 2-0 deficit. Solid goaltending after the first few minutes. Great game from Brandon Morley getting the hat trick and Bitzer helping a little at the end. Let's get the road sweep!!!

I know Bemidji hasn't exactly been lighting up the WCHA so far but that was a solid road win. Anytime you come back from a 2-0 deficit on the road is impressive.

Now, time to stop getting in those 2-0 holes...

Re: Alaska Nanooks 2015-16 Season Thread - Straight Outta Sanction…

Bemidji is a snake bitten team.
They have probably played well enough to win a couple of previous games and by all rights should have won last night. The Nooks were outplayed but fortunate. I can live with that. :) We are often on the other side of that coin. Let’s make no doubt tonight.

That was an important win last night. It’s early in the season, but I’m thinking we need to take at least 2 and maybe even 3 of 4 games on this road trip to stay in hunt for home ice. Brandon Morley played with a new found sense of confidence. Keep it rolling.

Go Nooks!

Sounds like Kyle Froese may be back tonight for the first time since January, which should help the defense as he gets back to game speed.

Re: Alaska Nanooks 2015-16 Season Thread - Straight Outta Sanction…

I’ve seen enough now to downgrade my expectations for this team. Were just not the team I thought we would be this year. 5x5 we’re a decent team but not as hard working as they need to be. Special team strategies/play suck. I’m hoping we’re good enough to make the playoffs, but can’t see us claiming home ice. They would really have to have a major turn around.

This next series against Ferris will probably come down to special teams play which means we are doomed once again. We will see exact opposite strategies. The Bulldog PK will put relentless pressure on the Nooks and we might not gain control in the zone much less get a good shot off. Our PK will sit back into a tight little group and let the Bulldogs tee off on us until they eventually score. We seem to take way too many lazy and unnecessary penalties and having a horrendous PK only makes matters worse.

When the other team gets a breakaway let them go. Jones has a better chance of stopping the breakaway than the Nooks do of a successful PK.

I would add one correction. They've shown the chops to come back from a deficit multiple times this year. The problem, in addition to the special teams deficiencies, is starting flat and constantly getting down early in games.

As much as anything, the absence of Parayko's leadership is notable. Everyone I've talked to said he was one of those rare players who just had the "it" factor, and the team fed off it. Somebody needs to step up and provide the leadership for 60 minutes, and it probably needs to be the elder Morley.

While I don't expect the younger Morley to snag a hat trick every weekend, one good sign this weekend was Basara getting on the scoreboard. He's been notably quiet so far.

This season reeks of the '13-'14 start to date. Not all is lost, but right now this looks like a 7 or 8 seed in the WCHA with a quick first round exit. We've only had one really bad season under Dallas (the year we won 12 games)...hopefully this isn't the second really bad season.

Re: Alaska Nanooks 2015-16 Season Thread - Straight Outta Sanction…

We have been down at least 0-2 in 7 out of 10 games. I believe a lot of those were due to our PK woes. We came back to win 3 of those (AIC, RPI, BSU). We were down 0-2 to BSU and came back to tie it, but lost 3-6.

Our PK strategy seems doomed to failure. When your PK is less than 70% you know you have problems. We skate too much on the PP and our passes are too slow, which allows opponents time to pressure out top or easily fill the shooting/passing lanes. We just need a lot of work or a new strategy in those areas.

Reminds me of Dallas' first year when our PP was atrocious. That team could have won the CCHA that year if it hadn't been so offensively challenged.

I wonder if Alaska regrets not protesting the sanction last year and taking it this year after the inevitable decision by the NCAA to uphold it. I understand they had that option. Their record was pretty good and seemed to be improving as the season went on. Hindsight and all given how their D and goal tending seems to be "rebuilding" in spades.

Swimming and WBB took that option. Hockey took their medicine and decided to move forward. Hindsight's 20/20, but it's hard to say "we're going to postpone the ban a year because we probably won't be as good next season."

If we can figure out the special teams quagmire I still think we can be potent in the second half.

I think that my only calculus would've been, "Will Parayko and T. Morley be back next year?" No, they aren't your whole team, but they're cogs. I was surprised that they didn't take the penalty for this season as well, but I'm guessing that they may have not wanted to hurt recruiting for future seasons.

There was a lot that went into the decision.

There are a lot of smart people in Fairbanks. They know their situation way, way better than I do. :)

Re: Alaska Nanooks 2015-16 Season Thread - Straight Outta Sanction…

The ban was a screw job but wasn’t going to be reversed. Besides probable considerations involving the already self-imposed scholarship reductions and recruiting challenges, can you imagine seniors starting summer conditioning, captain practices, regular season practices, non-conference games, and then entering the conference schedule knowing there was nothing to play for all season long? Half a season was bad enough.

Besides, our season isn’t starting off much different than in past years. We got swept at MSU on our first road trip out of state, and split one home series and one away series while spending lots of time in the box. If coaches change up special teams strategies we might get this season back on track.

The first six conference games this and the previous three years:
2015-16 -------- 2-4-0
2014-15 -------- 1-5-0
2013-14 -------- 2-4-0
2012-13 -------- 3-2-1

Nothing to panic about yet. The Nooks will rise and the Seawolves will fall, and the world will be in harmony once again.

Go Nooks!
