Alaska Nanooks 2015-16 Season Thread - Straight Outta Sanction…

Guy Gadowsky spoke and took questions at Coaches Corner last evening.
It was well advertised that he would be there and yet not one dump bear fan showed up to see him.

So what is your point? Are you trying to say that it reminded you of a Seawolve home game?
Or bragging that a group of loyal Seawolve fans fly out and attend all of John Hill's and Dave Shyiak's press conferences?

Or maybe there are no UA_ fans living in Anchorage.
Ya think?

Well advertised? I didn't hear a **** thing about it. Nor would I have gone anyway, I have no desire to give UAA any of my money and he's not even playing my team.

But in all seriousness, kudos to you on getting a B1G team to fly up here on a non-Kendall weekend.

Guy Gadowsky coaches Penn State. He is playing against the University of Alaska Anchorage. Tell me again why any non-UAA fan would give a rats *** about going to your coaches lunch or dinner or whatever it is in that scenario?

A pretty evenly played game in last night’s 2-2 tie with Ferris. I was glad to see us play a little more aggressive on the PK and not give up any PP goals. We also looked better on the PP even though we didn’t score. Face-offs were close to 50/50 which for us is a big improvement.

And I’m glad the 5 minute major did not cause us to lose the game (even tho it reduces our chances to win skating a man down). That didn't even look like a penalty to me. Veith went for the check and the Ferris guy tried to jump around the check which made for awkward contact. What glancing contact there was seemed to be shoulder/chest and butt/knee, it just spun him around. Hope the knee is OK.

Go Nooks!

Something else to note...Jesse Jenks may quietly be turning into our go-to goalie. Granted it's a small sample size (three games) compared to Jones, but his numbers (2-0-1, 2.27 GAA, .927 save percentage) are noticeably better.

Agreed. Both goals last night were pretty tough. The first by FSU was just a nice deflection. The second was a breakaway.
We almost gave up a second breakaway as time expired on an FSU penalty. That's just a lack of player awareness and maybe coaches & players not communicating well enough. Pick it up tonight boys. FSU will come out hard.

Jenks is going again tonight.

Well, going 1-1-2 on a four game roadie isn't outstanding, but I thought we saw a lot of positive movement forward.

Michigan Tech will be an interesting challenge. They're well balanced and get a lot of contribution from a lot of guys, so it's hard to zero in on a few particular players to shut down.

I also have to think Jenks gets another shot Friday night against Tech. He is playing well right now.

It would have been nice to win one at Ferris, but two ties is not too bad overall. The Bulldogs are a tough out in their own barn.

The Huskies will be a tough out even in our barn. If we sit back and play tentative they will pick us apart. We just need to stay aggressive and really battle for the puck. I can’t say we have been out-working teams this year. I think we have a couple guys who could up their effort a little. We need to go at them and take away time and space. Trust your teammates and goalie to do their part. I agree that Jenks has looked pretty solid. We need a couple sweeps at home, but that may be a tall order this weekend.

Re: Alaska Nanooks 2015-16 Season Thread - Straight Outta Sanction…

A few random thoughts about the Michigan Tech series...

--Tech is a much more balanced scoring team than we are. 54% of the 'Nooks scoring comes from our top five guys, compared to 46% for Tech. We are going to need some production this weekend from guys like Basara and Hajdukovich in order to match up.

--Tech's power play is at 24.4%, compared to a dismal 11.4% for the Nanooks. If UAF wants a shot at winning in this series, we have to stay out of the box. Giving up one goal on every four power plays to these guys won't get it done.

--Tech has 37 goals for compared to 30 goals against. UAF has 34 goals for compared to 37 goals against. The wild card for UAF might be Jesse Jenks, who has put up considerably better numbers in net than Davis Jones, albeit in fewer games. I'd be surprised if Jenks doesn't get the nod on at least Friday, as he started 3 of the 4 games on the road trip, and went unbeaten.

Realistically, the Nanooks need to stay disciplined and out of the box. If you have to take a penalty, make sure it is of the minor variety. Tech is getting about 27% of their scoring on the power play. I think our best chance is to beat them 5 on 5, especially considering the sluggishness of our own PP.

Re: Alaska Nanooks 2015-16 Season Thread - Straight Outta Sanction…

This weekend should be a pretty tough battle between to fairly even teams. MTU has split with Ferris (twice), NMU and BGSU. They swept UAH 4-2, 2-1 at UAH. The Nooks were swept at MSU, split with NMU and BSU, and tied FSU twice at FSU. MTU has played 5 of 10 conference games at home. Nooks have played 2 of 8 at home.

The Nooks may be settling in with Jenks as their starting goaltender. He started both nights at Ferris, and at 2-0-2 and a 2.41gaa has looked pretty solid. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him to be in net Friday, but if not we would probably see Davis Jones, 2-6-0, 3.39gaa. Jones has been hung out to dry a couple of games by team defense.

Haven’t heard the status of JD Peterson, or if we will see the return of Kyle Froese. Last year as a freshman, Froese was playing very well along side Parayko when he suffered a season ending injury in January. It may take a while for Froese to get back into game shape , but he will eventually be a key player on defense. An inexperienced defense has been somewhat a weakness this season, but you can see us getting better and more confident every game. This weekend will be another good test.

Special teams play has been our downfall. We did better at Ferris, but I’m not sure if that was an accident, due to the smaller rink, or if we are getting better. We need to stay aggressive, put solid pressure on both the fore-check and back-check. Do not give MTU time and space, especially on their PP. Trust your teammates and goalie to do their jobs and have your back. Lets go boys.

Go Nooks!
