Alaska Nanooks 2015-16 Season Thread - Straight Outta Sanction…

Re: Alaska Nanooks 2015-16 Season Thread - Straight Outta Sanction…

The Laker goalies didn't get much help from their teammates that weekend and Huntsville smelt the blood in the water. They deserved the sweep. Can't wait for the rematch.

... and you should go look at the quote in my original comment.

So...

Friday was pathetic. There's no way around it.

Saturday was better, aside from the shortie that Jenks blamed himself for. Take away that one play and it was an even game against a LSSU team that is a little bit better than they've gotten credit for.

Hajdukovich is no longer a captain.

Long story short, road trip shenanigans.

He must have had a really good time because he hasn't played since Ferris State, and he got knocked down to the fourth line for both of those games.

In a way I'm not surprised. I get the impression from watching us play that there are some locker room issues going on.

Any of you Nooks in town (or even Palinville) may want to come to Coaches Corner 6pm Thursday at the Alaska Airlines Center Varsity Sports Grill to hear Coach Ferguson speak.

I normally would, but I'm not flying down until Friday morning this time. Still have a gift card to the Varsity grill that I need to use...

The UA financial situation is going to get worse before it gets better...

The same holds true for the entire University system, not just UAF. The picture might be a little more grim for our Anchorage and Juneau friends who don't have the research dollars as well. Larger portions of the overall budget picture come from the state.

Looking at an income tax + reduced dividend solution. The lowest state non-zero income tax in the US right now is 2.89%, which if Alaska adopted the same at current median income levels equals roughly $500 million. That's about 1/5th of the overall projected shortfall right now...

Great foresight the people up top had for decades, regarding the states financials.

Time to put all research dollars in the UA general fund and spread it around.

Good job Nooks!

I believe last night was the fourth game in row that the Nooks haven’t given up a 5x5 goal. That would be a much more impressive stat if we hadn’t lost three of those games. But we are h*11 on wheels if you don’t count power play goals, shorthanded goals, empty netters, and penalty shots. :)

Jesse Jenks is quietly having a heck of a freshman year. Per Tim O'Donnell, he's now second in the WCHA in save percentage and third in GAA.

He is the reason UA_ didn't lose tonight.

Re: Alaska Nanooks 2015-16 Season Thread - Straight Outta Sanction…

Thoughts on the first half:
1. Our game intensity was often lacking the first half, but against UAA they clearly picked it back up a notch for most of the series (except for the 1st period Saturday night). We are not skilled enough to win on talent, so we need to move our feet and skate hard the whole game. Hope that is the second half mind-set.
2. Special teams were embarrassingly pitiful the first half. Whether it is the system we play or the execution, something has to change. Having the most penalty minutes in the conference and the poorest PK (by a wide margin) is not a good combination.
3. Jenks is solid.
4. We tend to hold the puck a bit too long, especially in traffic, and pass up quality shots for that extra pass that seldom makes connection. Get it on net. We have trouble enough with stick to stick open ice passes.
5. Until the UAA series, we usually lost the face-off battle. An important stat that needs attention.
6. Amazed how many times we cleanly get a stick on the puck during a PK but fail to clear it. Refer to PK percentage for the implications of this.
7. Looking ahead I don’t see any USHL recruits. Didn’t have any this year either. Don’t mind a good mix from different systems, but no USCHL recruits does not seem to bode well.
8. UAA sucks!
