Alaska Airlines Governors Cup UA vs. UAA Feb 25th & Feb 26th

Wondering how many lower-48'ers are wondering what an oosik is. :)

True story:

I have a couple pieces of Arctic Ocean driftwood next to an oosik on top of a bookshelf. Yesterday I came home from work (panhandling at Pike Place), and my dogs had taken the driftwood off the bookshelf and were playing with it on the floor but the oosik was untouched.

Further evidence that dogs are smarter than we give them credit for.

Serious answer for a serious question...

Hockey, rifle, and skiing are fine. Ironically Yoda's evil twin did us a lot of good because if he hadnt gotten fired, Dallas never would have been hired. Men's basketball has been in the toilet since Sokaitis left (or was forced out, depending on who you talk to). I don't like dogging one of our coaches but I don't think Clem Johnson is the answer. I'll freely admit that I don't think we have a prayer in Anchorage tonight.
That's what seems to be happening. UAA has been up nearly all game.

Our athletic department needs to become more innovative to be viable as a whole. Stop raising hockey ticket prices and run more promos to get the casual fans in the Carlson. There are 3,000 that will show up no matter what, but figure out how to get an extra 1,000 in there night in and night out. And, get the CC security staff to lighten up and let the students be students. Personally I'd like to see hockey move back to campus, but we are a long way off from that.
No way UAF gets anything athleticly on campus until UAA gets there process sorted out. UAF isn't facing Title IX suits and crumbling facilities. Plus the CC, I think, is perfectly fine for UAF. I wouldn't see any reason to leave for now.

Ticket prices are another issue. High ticket prices are a common complaint from causal fans here and I can imagine the same is going on up there.

Dat be true. I have spoken to quite a few fans (not season ticket holders) lately who have complained about the high cost of tickets. It seems like UAA would be better off to lower the prices and get more butts in the seats. It's a win win for both the fans and the team.

Re: Alaska Airlines Governors Cup UA vs. UAA Feb 25th & Feb 26th

If it’s this year’s fresh Blubber I’ll give you your preference of either some barbequed salmon lips. Or 2 pint jars of fresh caribou eyes.
If trying to pawn off freezer burned 5 year old bottom of the freezer blubber, I’ll will go 3 lbs of last year’s hooligan frozen in a leaky Safeway plastic bag, and toss in a spawned out male humpy frozen whole. That’s the best I can do.

mmf... we have a side bet on the G C do you want get in on the action?

I’ll have to think about this…Squarebanks thinks you are being funny and whimsical when you talk about barbequed salmon lips, fresh caribou eyes, last year’s hooligan in a leaky safeway bag, and frozen humphies, but I know you’re serious. I think I’ll pass.

But if you come north I’ll spring for your luncheon ticket and $5 worth of 50/50 tickets (hopefully any winnings won’t throw you into a higher tax bracket), and treat you to dinner. You may know my other guest for Friday dinner. I still owe you for being such a gracious host when I travel south.

I could be talked into betting a case of some locally produced beverage. I’ll wager something from Silver Gulch and I’m sure Anchorage has something suitable. No fair pulling out your last case of Prinz Brau from 1976. That stuff tasted like pi** back then. Payoff (either way) will have to wait until next time I drive down, which will probably be to “collect” payment. :)

Edit: Sorry for the tardy reply...been so busy at work I hardly have time even for Governor's Cup trash talk.

How much are reserved seats running now at Sully? UAF is up to $19 now for hockey. For a family of four, by the time you buy drinks and junk food, that's way north of $100 for an evening. Maybe the University is happy with the arrangement as-is, but this is a team coming off NCAA and CCHA tourney berths in the last two years. Seems to me as though the athletic department flushed a pretty good chance to get more people hooked.

I believe the cheapest seats are $15.00, but am not positive about that. They have been running good promos, but not sure where they are being advertised other than the UAA website. Most people I talk to know nothing about them. Glad to hear Craig Parkinson say the U had posters all over the place for this series, he seemed pleased with the school spirit being shown for this weekend.

UAA mens B-ball team swept UA_. 74-65 in Squarebanks, 118-72 in LosAnchorage. The UAA B-ball team has not lost to UA_ in more than 5 years. Sounds like the place was rocking with a lot of rowdy students. Hope they all make it to the hockey game on Saturday!!

Don't worry, there will be plenty of students there on Saturday...

And hint: v-ball isn't the only one that's going to beat Anchorage this week. Alaska Hockey is going to have to dig out the caribou eyeballs to make good on his promise.
I didn’t see Volleyball on the schedule. Better sharpen your ulu because I want a chunk of fresh blubber.

They would still look better than that sea creature mascot that walks around the Sully.

As much as I dislike our new sea creature, I dislike those bi-polar polar bears, (what is it Mama Papa and Baby Bear), even more. ;)

But the polar bears are cute and cuddly and kids like them. The sea creature looks like something a north slope whaler might harpoon on accident.

This is true. The polar bears are OK mascots. Not exactly fierce, but hey.

The seawolf mascot scares children and shames alumni. :D NO ONE likes it.... unless one of you want to fess up to having horrible taste?

Re: Alaska Airlines Governors Cup UA vs. UAA Feb 25th & Feb 26th

And of course it makes so much sense for a school that is 700 miles from the nearest polar bear to use that as a mascot. What sort of idiot choose a polar bear over a grizzly bear? The best bet for your school would have been the mosquito.

UAF Skeeters ... I like it. Or maybe UAF LakeFarters?

Even if Suze likes this one better ...

Really? No one? My daughter likes the Seawolf mascot. Arguement invalidated.

Really? No one?...

No one should ever, ever, ever, speak in absolutes. For example, I get quite upset when I hear someone say all Seawolf fans suck. I'm 100% sure not ALL Seawolf fans suck. Well, almost 100% sure anyway. I got your back. :)
