When your Women's Volleyball team may be the only one to gain a victory over UAA, things look bleak.
On the whole, UAF's athletic department is looking bad. What's going on?
Serious answer for a serious question...
Hockey, rifle, and skiing are fine. Ironically Yoda's evil twin did us a lot of good because if he hadnt gotten fired, Dallas never would have been hired. Men's basketball has been in the toilet since Sokaitis left (or was forced out, depending on who you talk to). I don't like dogging one of our coaches but I don't think Clem Johnson is the answer. I'll freely admit that I don't think we have a prayer in Anchorage tonight.
Women's bball has had no stability for several years, which I think is most of the problem there.
Don't know enough about volleyball to comment.
Our athletic department needs to become more innovative to be viable as a whole. Stop raising hockey ticket prices and run more promos to get the casual fans in the Carlson. There are 3,000 that will show up no matter what, but figure out how to get an extra 1,000 in there night in and night out. And, get the CC security staff to lighten up and let the students be students. Personally I'd like to see hockey move back to campus, but we are a long way off from that.
Fix basketball and turn it back into a campus event. The Patty can hold 2,000 and some games we get 10% of that. Ridiculous.
Travel costs are ridiculous. We have GOT to have a better partnership with Alaska Airlines on that issue. My worry is that nobody has bothered to ask. Getting a better hold on travel costs will help the bottom line. Or, at the very least, sell the naming rights to the Patty Center.
There's your serious answer. And hint: v-ball isn't the only one that's going to beat Anchorage this week. Alaska Hockey is going to have to dig out the caribou eyeballs to make good on his promise.
