Alaska Airlines Governors Cup UA vs. UAA Feb 25th & Feb 26th

Re: Alaska Airlines Governors Cup UA vs. UAA Feb 25th & Feb 26th

We're gonna have to agree to disagree on this one JJ. I think Shyiak's emotions and frustration got the best of him - again.

I'm going to side with Suze here. I think it was a very poor decision. I can understand wanting to pull the goalie early, but that was just unproductively desperate. UAA was only 2 goals down at the time. He had a few minutes at least to hope for a PP.

I should probably know by the headline "Alaska Airlines", but with about a six hour drive between the two cities, I assume these teams fly to Anchorage? Immediately after the game tonight? Tomorrow morning? Do they take the same flight?

UAA is leaving out tonight. Probably boarding the plane in a few for the 12:20am flight. UAF flies tomorrow at noon. Pre-game meal in anchorage and fly back right after the game. No hotel.

EDIT: This is all assuming these flights aren't rescheduled for the storm.

I have to disagree, I'm not gonna repeat myself, just look at my previous posts. You can't fault him for taking a risk that had to be taken.

UAA charters an Era plane (basically they give Era sponsorship space in exchange for the charter, same with Extended Stay for the Hotel) and leaves basically whenever they want.

Yes, but it didn't have to be taken THEN. A 2 goal lead is the worst to have, so to speak and 6 minutes is plenty of time (as Beck and Taranto demonstrated) to score a goal, maybe 2, to get back in it. If you're still down by 2 with about 2 minutes to go, then pull him.

With 6 minutes left, it was a dumb decision. Strategically it makes no sense at all. You say he had to do it to fire up his team. All he did was make it worse, getting his guys in a funk before the game tomorrow. Fail.

His team was flat, had given up, and wasn't able to generate offensively. He'd already used his timeout. Add in the fact that UAF had only taken 3 penalties all night and the chances of any advantage were slim. He had a faceoff in the offensive zone and he took the risk knowing that in previous situations this season his team has responded favorably. He needed a goal at that exact moment or the game was lost already. I repeat, he needed a goal at that exact moment or the game was lost already, so the risk had to be taken.

The problem was is that, like all night, his defenders couldn't hold the puck and they couldn't get it back deep.

I'll say it again, The Risk HAD To Be Taken.

...For me, in the spare time in Fairbanks, it's either sit in the hotel room or go to a bar, that's it...

If you're a Seawolf fan, drinking alone or in some dimly lit dive is probably not a bad or uncommon part of your hockey experience. Fairbanks, Anchorage, it really doesn't matter. We may even have more dimly lit dives to choose from. Think of the positives.

Barkeep...another round for my friend here...

Go Nooks!

Re: Alaska Airlines Governors Cup UA vs. UAA Feb 25th & Feb 26th

Tonight's game could be 180 degrees different. One bounce or break can change the whole complexion of the game, regardless of how every minute up to that point has gone.

That's why, IMHO, that was a poor coaching move last night, born out of frustration. The Coach is supposed to model how to fight through frustration and make good decisions, not model the effects of failing to do so. The Seawolves were baaaadly out-skated last night and looked bad. So what. One bounce would have put them right back in it and put the Nooks on their heels trying to protect a one goal lead. We have lost a number of games this year when we out-skated teams.

The fans were nervous. You could feel it. We were waiting for UAA to pull within one so we could say "crap...here we go again." But when UAA pulled the goalie the mood got lighter because everyone knew it was probably over. You could hear some fat lady in back humming a tune.

Go Nooks!

You also said we weren't fast or talented enough to get past uaas defense.... :D
Still don't when our defense is actually playing their game. That was the problem last night, they played horribly.

What is the WCHA format?

# 12 plays #1, #11 plays #2, etc. Nobody gets a bye. With the CCHA having 11 teams I could see the first place team getting a bye, but the first FIVE teams? Head scratcher.

I don't remember the CCHA ever doing this before. When they had 12 teams, only the first 6 got home ice, right? Or am I wrong about that?

I meant to ask the Fairbanks fans what the weather is like there now? Sounded like you were having a blizzard last night, did it stop? How much snow did you all get?

haha it may be the pregnancy brain, but i think top 4 got a first round bye, then 5-6-7-8 hosted 9-10-11-12...

and the weather is ok now, i hear its supposed to get to -30, so the snow and wind has died down, but now the temp is dropping for a few days.

After the first round you have six left, it doesn't add up, somewhere they need to get to four teams, then two. Do they have play in games after the first round, if so there are the byes, they just do them latter in the playoffs, where the CCHA has their byes early.

Re: Alaska Airlines Governors Cup UA vs. UAA Feb 25th & Feb 26th

I'll say it again, The Risk HAD To Be Taken.

Not with 5minutes left. I have to agree with Suze and 99% of the hockey fans and say that was one of the worst coaching moves.

I think we should fire our coach for being a hot head AND incompetent. And fire AD/dean (whoever) for the 4 hour tv broadcast delay at home.

our PP looked awful, 0 shots 5 on 3 ... And looked weak defensively with those 2 goals. I think we need to take chances on the penalties and be more physical. or really slow the game down.... lot of side2side, front2back passing till Nanooks run of gas.
