Alaska Airlines Governors Cup UA vs. UAA Feb 25th & Feb 26th

Re: Alaska Airlines Governors Cup UA vs. UAA Feb 25th & Feb 26th

Heck tho, it only feels like a rivalry thru the fans. Shyiak after the game on tv really kinda just blew it off like losing the cup didn't matter. I get he was proud of the win, UAA came out strong, especially compared to last night so he should be proud, but he really didn't seem to care and just wanted to move on to next weekends games.
What do you expect him say? He's got a team to manage and coach that still has two league games and the WCHA playoffs to play. He's trying to lead his team with his attitude of "well we still have important games to play." It not that he doesn't care, he does, his two career bench minor penalties are against UAF, what about his attitude in previous years? Yeah he cares, but, he's got a team that he has to keep motivated for two more league games and league playoffs. Ultimately, they won game tonight and now there are bigger fish to fry, so to speak.

Re: Alaska Airlines Governors Cup UA vs. UAA Feb 25th & Feb 26th

Nice to keep the hardware but we didn't play well for four out of six periods, and I think if Greenham had let in a fifth goal it would have been time for a Steve Thompson sighting. As it was, allowing 4 goals on 11 shots is...well, not good. I had a hunch this would be a split, the teams are two evenly matched on paper to expect much else.

I also think they should make this a best of three and maybe have the extra game in mid-December before the holiday break. That, or keep it to two games and play Thursday-Saturday or Friday-Sunday to make the travel easier.

As Colton Beck said afterwards, it's weird to win the Cup but be ****ed about the team's performance at the same time.

I can't see it going to a three-games-if-needed format. With the Aces playing at the Sully and all the other events that go on there, I can't see renting the ice when you wouldn't know if you even needed it until the first two games had been played. Just too uncertain.

Has Greenham had any other melt downs like that one last night? His save percentage is going to take a serious hit.

He got chased once by Miami last season. Most of the time he's very solid, but every goalie has a stinker occasionally. Just part of the game, I suppose.

Re: Alaska Airlines Governors Cup UA vs. UAA Feb 25th & Feb 26th

As much as I'd prefer best of three (or five), I don't see that happening for NCAA scheduling reasons. Right now we're both at the NCAA cap for regular season games, so unless both league schedules are shortened, or one of us gives up our tournament, there simply isn't room for any extra games. And I'm not sure if you can schedule a potentially unneeded game in the regular season, you might have to play it anyway.

Only way I could see it is if both teams SOMEDAY manage to get together in the same league... Could play 4 conference games against each other, and maybe schedule a non-conference game as the tie-breaker. That would still leave us with an empty slot that we'd ideally like to be filled, maybe see if we could schedule something like with the Canadian schools, have a team come up here and play UAA one day and UAF another?

Anyway, I think a more realistic option would just be changing the tie-breaker. At least something like goal differential or total goals scored has something to do with the games themselves.

Re: Alaska Airlines Governors Cup UA vs. UAA Feb 25th & Feb 26th

That is rude they did that during senior presentations...if it was during regular starting lineups i can understand, but I apologize for them that they did that during senior sendoff. Not cool.
You know this is not the first time this kind of thing has happened with the UAF fans. I've come to almost expect it to be happening every year.

Now the one question I have is this: I assume that the University is helping these kids get down to Anchorage, arrangements with travel and tickets right? So the University of Alaska Fairbanks helps these kids get down and in the building and then allows them to act disrespectful and allows them march through the UAA student section basically inviting physical altercation. It happens every year and only at the Sully with the UAF fans. No UAA fan is marching through the UAF student section at the Carlson. The UAF athletic department needs to rein in this type of behavior or this is what is gonna happen and the blame will lie entirely at their feet.

When I brought the "What the **** is a Seawolf" T-shirts (from last season) to Forrest Karr's attention, he said he knew nothing about it. He said his students had crossed the line and that there would be an administrator on the road for Saturday's game at Sullivan to keep things in control. So much for that. But I totally agree JJ. If the University is going to arrange transportation for UA_ students to come down for the games, they need to take some responsibility for their actions.

Let's see, in the past we have seen this from UA_ fans:

* Throwing tons of flash lights on the ice during the game - took forever to clean up the CLEAR plastic pieces that shattered
* Bringing in sawed off hockey sticks and pounding them on the metal floors, doing damage (the Sully security had to confiscate them)
* Repeated pounding of and damaging of the Sully glass (they have been told NOT to do this)
* Vulgar T-shirts
* Disrespectful acts during senior night presentations

Not at all something to be proud of. Bush league and classless.

I know that there is good natured ribbing on these boards between UAA and UA_ fans, so my beef is not with you. But something needs to be done about this.

Seriously, enough with the holier than thou BS. I don't condone our students doing stupid **** but it goes both ways and you know it. To wit, last year at the Sully, security had to escort YOUR students out of the section OUR students were in after they walked right down in the middle of the UAF section and started talking trash and waving a UAA flag. And, perhaps even better, some angelic Anchorageite yelled "***** THE NOOKS" as loud as he could in the parking lot afterwards.

Now, since some of my best friends in life are Seawolves I know not every UAA fan is a blathering idiot like the examples above.

Quit being so sore and be happy you blew out your arch rival last night.

That was the worst game I think I've seen UAF play in a long time. Maybe coach should have let Greenham sit a few games this year he looks fatigued, he isn't seeing the puck too well. Crazy we play that bad and take home the cup. If they play like this they are done.

Re: Alaska Airlines Governors Cup UA vs. UAA Feb 25th & Feb 26th

Governor's Cups
UAF - 10 ----- 4 via shootout after splitting the series
UAA - 8 ----- 1 via shootout after splitting the series

Without Shootouts
UAF - 6 Cups won outright
UAA - 7 Cups won outright

Be proud of your precious Shootout Cups. Cause they sure as heck aren't putting any dent in UAA's all time dominance over UAF.

UAF Hockey :: We WON the Shootout!!! <----- LMAO

Come on at least show a little class. If you don't like the rules, change them, they were agreed upon by both universities.

Ummm no. We had this discussion last season. Nobody had to be escorted out. The UA_ fans went over and caused trouble in the UAA student section. UAA fans returned the favor. It was a give and take on both sides, and nobody was offended either way ... it was actually funny and the _airbanks fans were laughing at it. Security was there just to be sure nobody was harrassing anybody else. Where was security last night?

Hello? Your fans are complaining about not liking the shoot out as much as UAA fans are. Sheesh.

I don't condone that kind of behavior myself but nearly every incident starts with a UAF fan doing something. As Suze stated, that all started with a group of UAF students walking into the UAA section, something the do every year it seems. It may seem like fun and games but it's a ticking time bomb, one of these days somebody is gonna take exception and get violent and it'll be a riot. It's teetered on the edge in years past and some day soon it's gonna tip. And when that riot happens it's gonna be bad for everybody, because it'll be everywhere.

I'm not saying UAA innocent in anyway, but the transgressions by UAA fans are nowhere near the level of the UAF fans.

Now, since some of my best friends in life are Seawolves I know not every UAA fan is a blathering idiot like the examples above.

I'm not sore about anything. I'm geniunely concerned about where things are going, because they are leading to a level of violence on a mass scale unless something is done.

I think you're complaining about too much Suze. Who cares about t-shirts or banging on the glass? The Senior Night thing is a little annoying but eh whatever. The real concern is the lack of adequate seperation. It's at the point, with the level of antipathy between the groups at a very high level, that marching through anothers section is inviting violence. That has to be controlled.

But a t-shirt? Banging on the glass? Lol ok, no big deal. I'll get you a "You Can't Spell Failure Without UAF" shirt and let the complaints come to you.

I didn't complain about the T-shirts that were worn this year, but the ones that were worn last year that had the word "F" + "uck" in them. Not cool.

Um let's see, can't afford and they probably aren't that good, those are hills not mountains, and been there and been there. No place to hang out and kill time, well except movies I could watch here.

Quit *****ing, and stay in Anchorage then. Fans like you are the reason UAA has **** for support.

Get over it man, I've seen and experienced ******** UAA fans in Anchorage. UAA can't even get enough fans in their own barn, let alone get more than 5 to the games in Fairbanks. Does UAA even provide a shuttle service? Not enough fans to justify it? It must suck to have fans with no passion. Anyway there are always a few bad apples in any crowd, including the crowds at UAA.

Re: Alaska Airlines Governors Cup UA vs. UAA Feb 25th & Feb 26th

Higher priorities Saturday night, so I finished watching the game on the DVR Sunday morning. Disappointed in the outcome but not as much in the Nooks play as some of you seem to be. Granted, I didn't see it live, and I even fast-forwarded through some parts, but it seems the Seawolves were opportunistic with their chances and the Nooks weren't, although they had lots of them. Kamal both played well and was lucky at times. Good for the Seawolves. Greenham's stats are good but a little misleading. I think he has only been average most the year. Not bad, just average. IMHO the Nooks are a faster and better skating club. We lost the game. We won the cup. We move on.

I'm not a big fan of shootouts, but I'm not sure why Seawolf fans think we have a such big advantage on them. It's a goalie defending against a breakaway. Something all teams practice, all rink rats spend hours at, no matter which conference you're in. Kamal stoned a Nook once or twice earlier in the game on breakaways, he didn't in the shootout. It's not like they're doing trick shots off the scoreboard or rafters like Jorden & Bird.

Although the results were the same for the Nooks...nothing but net!

Go Nooks!

You have a big advantage in shootouts since you all use the shootout in ccha play and 1/4 of your games ended in a shootout, yes every team practices breakaway drills, but practice doesnt help when you go against a team who's use to doing a shootout in a game situation.

So, anything else to talk about besides attendance or are you going to keep trotting out the same tired arguement?

No fans with passion eh? Did you miss the 200+ UAA students asking you why so quiet? The ones drowning you out?

And talking attendance, if I'm not mistaken I don't think the Carlson Center was sold out either? UAF can't even get enough fans in their own barn!
