2024 Elections: One Last Chance for Democracy

One thing I do think people have a legitimate beef over are abandoned cities.

Mind you, I do know that Rs are just making it a lot worse, and dumpy is even worse than that.

But we just spent a night in Dunkirk NY. This is a mid sized city that is clearly dying. There are signs that this was a nice place, but no longer. What are the plans for places like this? These towns are the core of angry people who blame others for their downturn- and they are correct in being angry, just blaming the wrong people. It’s not migrants who took their jobs, it’s the owners who moved the jobs away. But what do we do with all of the people left behind and angry? Who will listen to anyone else who is angry?

They die. Just like the buggy whip.

She's gonna go through some things?

Old White Guys disapprove. Old White Guys think that their opinion matters to women under 30. Old White Guys believe everyone feels like they do.

This is gonna be the most pathetic cancellation attempt of them all.

I saw how 300K+ people went to go register to vote after Taylor's post. Do we think these are first time voters? How many people out there are not registered? I thought that was a lot of people and good on her for making that happen.

You know, there are plenty of angry people in the inner cities, too. How come it's always Democrats who have to care about dying rural towns and smaller cities that will never vote for them, but there's never any pressure on Republicans to listen to the people from Chicago/Philly/Baltimore?

Maybe those angry people should look inward as to why their towns can never attract doctors/lawyers/engineers, or why their kids move away to the big metropolises of Des Moines/Omaha/Bismarck. Maybe they should stop cutting property taxes to appease the local Farm Bureau and actually fund their local schools to encourage families to stick around.

JD Vance on CNBC says that if immigration was the path to prosperity, then "America would be the most prosperous country in the world." (Who wants to tell him ... )

Normal variation. The arc is what matters. If I get ambitious I'll throw it in a spreadsheet and do rolling averages. That's why I am doing every 3 days. If 538 was better I'd remove partisan polling because the GOP has been flooding the zone with their BS polling. The Dems have some but they aren't as frequent so the effect is pulling the results right.

To be fair, though, in 2016 and 2020 Dump overperformed the polls, so there is a Secret Nazi Factor.

There are people on social media who do those types of spreadsheets and such...I will see if I can find them. Plenty of stats people like Tom Bonier and Simon Rosenberg follow those trends as well. Rosenberg was the one shouting from the rooftops a month or so before the Midterms saying there is no Red Wave based on the actual polling. (beyond the headlines)

Small-government, free-thinking, self-researching, libertarian, boot-strapping righties are suddenly concerned that the government won't do something to help?

Well, now I'm concerned*.

*in the same sense that Susan Collins is so often concerned.

DateRightStuff won't respond. Ever.

There are a few people who absolutely mock the hell out of his "I'm only asking questions" persona.

As for the woman, her TikTok popped up on my For You page last night and God d*amn was it heart wrenching to watch. These people on the right don't care. "SAVE THE BAYBEES!" they bleat with zero consideration of outcome.

Did the 300K register or just go the site? And they still have to actually vote, too. Don't get me wrong, every bit counts and even pushing that many people to the site is amazing, considering she was even getting young women more involved in the election cycle before the endorsement, so you can add it to the already impressive effect she's had.

I heard they registered...and most will likely vote.

They consider it...they don't care. Women are not people to these losers they are vessels. And make no mistake, to women of that brood they feel the same way until it happens to them.

I grew up in a town 1/3 of Dunkirk's current size with a similar industry boom, bust, and pull out. My home town county has been R dominated for local elections for 30 years and they still continue to blame everyone else for their problems.

I see posts from former HS classmates who whine that gas prices are affecting them, and they can never get ahead working minimum wage jobs. And then I see them supporting people who continually campaign against these people's best interests.

Took the words out of my mouth. I am so tired of being expected to listen and pander to obstinate rubes who hate us and refuse to listen to us. Your town died because your kids don't want to live in a racist pseudo-Xtian monoculture with no economic future. You have no economic future because you pandered to corporate interests and didn't plan for the future, then inevitably took it in the shorts and blamed it on the "libtard" pols for driving businesses away.

In a way it's not wanting to accept that they are actually "poor". People are brought up with such a negative connotation on that position it's hard to accept it as it's viewed as a lesser form in society. That's the root of it.

It's no different than myself working on coming to terms with the idea that I'll never be able to own a home or have a retirement fund above "minimum wage" levels.

Society overall has painted a picture from the 80s that simply is no longer reachable for 60% of the country, but still shuns the majority for not attaining it.

The best, and you are seeing in a lot of towns in Minnesota, is that migrants end up moving there and really get the economy humming! Schools re-open, shops start selling things again, restaurants thrive and everything works. Whenever they interview the locals they talk about how wonderful everything is...until they have to talk about why and then their racism causes them to short circuit. I think a few years back there was a story posted on this board about where a bus driver had been out of work because the school was empty, then the migrant families showed up. Now he is fully employed, living a much better life but he openly admits he doesn't much care for the migrants...even though they pay his phucking wages.

It wasn't reachable then...it was a lie. A carrot to keep our parents working crappy jobs for no money so people like Trump could fly around in jets pretending we could be them. I grew up working poor (or as they called it...LOWER MIDDLE CLASS) and spent most of college and grad school poor so I have no such illusions or denials. I also learned never to be in the red so I would literally figure out my monthly budgets to the friggin penny. If I had not gotten very lucky meeting my SO 12 years ago I would still be renting working mediocre jobs with no chance to retire ever.
