2024 Bracketology - The Road to Connecticut

Sorry Norwich sucked and helped tank your SOS.

It might also get worse for next year. With only 8 members does the sunyac stick with only playing teams twice and having 14 conference games or do they switch to playing teams 3 times and having 21 conference games? Do they do some sort of rotation where u play 2 teams 3x a year and play the others 2x to keep the 16 game conference schedule? It could be play 4 teams 3x and the others 2x for 18 games?

Before I answer your question, I will answer for the UCHC -- they plan on playing each team four times.

As for the SUNYAC, I know in the recent past, they talked about regional groupings to help cut down on travel costs (and they were going to use this system when they were trying to play during the pandemic year). Perhaps they bring that idea back in order to play those in their regional group three times and those in the other group two times. Aside from that, the assumptions I was getting from coaches this year is simply two times for each opponent. I got that assumption from some who were complaning about trying to find more non-conference games.

I believe it mattered in past years, but there was a post last weekend that the overtime adjustment didn't apply anymore.

I believe it does still matter this year as well. I was going to go back to find that post and ask them exactly where did they see that change.

The reason I say that is twofold. I asked about the USCHO pairwise, and was told they are using the system the NCAA told them to use -- weighted factors for home and away wins/losses and weighted factors for regulation and overtime wins/losses.

Also, I got this comment from a coach concerning Plattsburgh -- "Getting beat by a team with 10 non wins on their record hurt plattsburgh in this situation." That certainly implies a difference in regulation and overtime wins/losses.

Page 21 of the 2024 NCAA Division III Pre-Championship Manual, which contains all of the criteria. It is not something I am smart enough to make up.

LOL

- Includes 1.2/.8 Home/Away weighting.
- No adjustment to calculation for games decided in overtime.

Thanks. So, there is a weighting for home/away, but not for regulation/overtime. Interesting.

I will forward this to the person I was discussing this at USCHO.

Now that everything looks current, this is where we stand with one regular season game to go. If Trinity wins, this will be the final outcome, if Tufts wins, all hell breaks loose tomorrow

I have once again provided Option 1 (no flights), and Option 2 (one flight to keep the West together)

CCC: Endicott (15)
MASCAC: Plymouth State (T-4)
MIAC: St. Olaf (28)
NCHA: St. Norbert (T-6**)
NEHC: Hobart (1)
NESCAC: Trinity* (2)
SUNYAC: Cortland (T-24)
UCHC: Utica (T-4**)
WIAC: Stevens Point (8)

** indicates PW tiebreaker winner

At-Large:

Adrian (3)
Elmira (T-6)
Geneseo (9)
Curry (10)

First Four Out:

Plattsburgh (11)
Skidmore (12)
Bethel (13)
Stevenson (14)

OPTION 1

Round 1:

Geneseo @ Elmira
St. Olaf @ Stevens Point
Cortland @ Trinity
Endicott @ Utica
Curry @ Plymouth State

Quarterfinals:

Curry/Plymouth State @ Hobart
Geneseo/Elmira @ Adrian
Endicott/Utica @ Cortland/Trinity
St. Olaf/Stevens Point @ St. Norbert

OPTION 2

Round 1:

St. Olaf @ Adrian
Stevens Point @ St. Norbert
Cortland @ Plymouth State
Endicott @ Elmira
Curry @ Geneseo

Quarterfinals:

Curry/Geneseo @ Hobart
Endicott/Elmira @ Trinity
Stevens Point/St. Norbert @ St. Olaf/Adrian
Cortland/Plymouth State @ Utica

With Trinity going final, this is the final bracketology of the year

My gut is telling me that Option 1 will be the final bracket, but I think the 2nd option is better for competitive integrity in my opinion

Would Olaf/Adrian require a flight?

Without looking on the official NCAA mileage chart, yet.

BTW, teams can turn down a flight and take a bus. They are not obligated too, but they can choose that option. Cortland football did that for three of their playoff games. For them, it wasn't much over the 500 mile limit, and it was way more of a hassle flying. So, they felt it was easier, and better bonding, to bus it.

Would Olaf/Adrian require a flight?

Yes that would be the only flight in Option 2 (Adrian to Stevens Point is only 490)

Realistically they could flip Adrian and St. Norbert in my Option 2 and have an all-west region with no fights needed unless it's a St. Olaf-Adrian QF

The women’s bracket is out and for what it’s worth, the #1 seed and the #3 seed are playing in the QF to avoid flights. Sets up to fly 3 teams west for a FF though.

While I would prefer Option 1, Option 2 seems to be the most reasonable choice. Although I think the first round matchups in the west will be St Olaf @ St Norbert and Point @ Adrian.
