2024 Bracketology - The Road to Connecticut

As the person who Russell was discussing this with at USCHO, I can fill in some information.

USCHO's owner Tim Brule is the main developer for stats and rankings. He worked over the weekend with the NCAA's consultant on the RPI and Pairwise to get it correct. The issue was with stats coming from Genius (the NCAA stats supplier) and the NCAA itself, especially dealing with which teams were home or visitor or if a game is at a neutral site. Strangely enough Genius doesn't list home and visitor but team1 and team2 and those are sometimes are not entered correctly and we have to go in and fix them.

According to Tim, 90% of the work USCHO does fixing stats each season is from D-III because of errors with box scores. Many schools/leagues have not updated to the new NCAA software, so they are still using the old StatCrew which has to be converted to the new system after the game. Games from those schools can't be displayed as live scores because there's no live data. (And not as some say because USCHO doesn't care. If USCHO didn't care, Tim wouldn't spend hours each week fixing the mess.) We understand many schools have limited resources.

All that said, USCHO spent many hours over the weekend to get our PWR to match the NCAA's official data which the NCAA's consultant had spent hours correcting for tournament selection.

When collegehockeystats.net was in business, we had a correct feed from them and received notices when things needed to be fixed. USCHO can't force schools to update their software and we get whatever Genius sends us.

Thank you

Maybe this wasn't clear to everyone, but through our discussion, this was my understanding. We know that games from certain places would always be the last to report and I thought the consensus here was that the school was to "blame" for it. I also get, as with the D-III tournament, that the D-III pages on USCHO can't generate much (if any) revenue, so I appreciate the news I can get. I also know it may be delayed due to whomever the reporting school is. Finally, curse whatever led to the downfall of collegehockeystats.net!

Very informative Ed, thanks

Definitely a favorable matchup for the Perennial National Power, but the longer the game stays close the tighter the sticks will be gripped. Should be a fun three weeks.

Was fun watching St. Norbert go into Adrian and win Saturday. May have to do it again next week. Like I said, it should be a fun tournament.

SNC seems to have the blueprint for beating Adrian. Even in the 4-1 loss in their first matchup, it looked like SNC was the better team for the majority of that game.

I don't want to look too far past St Olaf (almost fell into that trap two years ago), but either potential QF matchup would make a hell of a rematch.

I'm curious, it seems many people here knew the At-Large selections before they happened. Does the committee predictably go by RPI?, is this a requirement or just something they do?
Has there ever been discussion on switching to something more accurate than RPI such as Elo?

Read back a bit in this discussion. Simply they are based on the Pairwise. I’m sure there is a longer answer, but this is the short a sweet one!

And it's in the pre-championships manual officially:

For the 2023-24 championship season, the men’s ice hockey committee will utilize the Pairwise ranking system, which incorporates the criteria outlined below. Also refer to Appendix C for additional detail.

● Ratings Percentage Index (RPI).
● Quality Win Bonus (applied to RPI).
● Head-to-head competition.
● Results vs. common opponents.

Also, this is the current D-III men's ice hockey committee which is responsible for following the selection and bracket criteria:

East:

Katie Boldvich, chair, Commissioner New England Hockey Conference (Men’s)

Tyler Hynes, Head Men’s Ice Hockey Coach Wilkes University

West:

Danielle Harris, Commissioner Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference

Graham Johnson, Head Men’s Ice Hockey Coach Milwaukee School of Engineering

If it works out, would love to see this QF at the Cornerstone. Just like SNC can't look past Olaf, Adrian will have their hands full with Point and those two schools have a history of their own.

After three early season road losses to tournament quality opponents, I had accepted that SNC's ceiling this year was a runner up finish in the NCHA tourney. I'm so excited that this team has a chance to make a run in March. At the risk of repeating a phrase that was beaten to death in the Packers surprise playoff run, it feels like this team is playing with house money.

Just like Higher Education, they need 4 people to do the Job, Pioneer247 does better. They should just disband the committee and wait for the Bracketology to come out here and save everyone some time.

I'll do it for free too!

The Committee does it for free, too. :-)

But in all seriousness, the Committee does a whole lot more than just the brackets. Also, whatever bracket they come up with, has to be approved by the NCAA and their budget committee (and they have been known to reject them in the past, which shows sometimes the committee does try to do the right thing). So, even Pioneer 247 does a way better bracket, even he would be shot down... :-(

They are playing their best hockey of the season at the right time and are no longer overly reliant on their excellent first line. Love #25's hands. Love #9's jam, love the smaller and more dynamic D-men (#3 #5 #23) who compliment the bigger, more stay-at-home guys perfectly. I have lots of confidence in #39. Excited for next weekend, and hopefully a couple more...

2021-22 was a fun season, but it was basically just the Peter Bates show and that burned them when they had to play a top notch opponent. Having a bit more balanced scoring has been great.

This is the first year I've felt confident in a goalie since #23's brother was in net. Nothing against the other two guys who have played significant time at that position since then, but it makes such a huge difference.
