2024 Bracketology - The Road to Connecticut

There is an article on USCHO.com bemoaning that St. Norbert and Adrian are playing in the QF this weekend. Except his argument is that the #4 team shouldn't play the #5 team in a QF matchup. Except that's exactly who the #4 team should play in a QF. If you look at the Pairwise, they are #3 and #6 - again a perfect QF matchup.

As Bartman pointed out in a different thread the PW is perfectly aligned right now with 1v8 - 2v7 - 3v6 - 4v5. So much for Fish crying foul!

Facts are despite any ratings or opinions it is simply decided on the ice. Score more goals than the other guys/gals and you win, simple as that.

Back in 2019, #4 SNC had to play on the road at #1 Stevens Point in the QF (the week after playing #8 Augsburg in the opening round). They had a reason to complain then. But there's absolutely nothing to complain about this year.

No Coghlin tonight. From SNC:

DE PERE – The NCAA Division III Men's Ice Hockey Committee has suspended St. Norbert College coach Tim Coghlin from coaching in the Green Knights' national quarterfinal game Saturday, March 16, at Adrian College for an act of misconduct following a first-round game against St. Olaf College on Saturday, March 9.

After reviewing the information presented during a misconduct administrative hearing on Wednesday, March 13, the Division III Men's Ice Hockey Committee discussed the matter and made its conclusion. St. Norbert appealed the decision to the Division III Championships Committee, which upheld the suspension on Friday, March 15.

St. Norbert College will have no further comment on this matter.

For those who don't know what the "act of misconduct" I'm assuming it was he flipped off the camera during the post game interview.

Wow. Do you know where to find the announcement from the NCAA?

The document from the DIII Championships Committee isn't very explosive, just lists who was on the call and heard the appeal. They don't go into the meat of the issue

I can't find a similar public report from the DIII Men's Ice Hockey Committee on the initial suspension. Members: Chair Katie Boldvich (NEHC Commissioner), Danielle Harris (WIAC Commissioner), Tyler Hynes (Wilkes HC) and Graham Johnson (MSOE HC).

I'm still really confused by this article. If the author would have made the argument that the pairwise rankings are flawed and SNC should have been seeded higher, I would understand his complaint (not that I would have agreed). But to argue against what is by all accounts the correct matchup at this stage of the tournament?

If we take the seeding as is, Adrian is the only team with a legit complaint about this year's bracket. As the third seed, they earned a first round bye, but instead had to play the #8 seed in the opening round.

If the bracket was arranged by seed without geographic constraints, it still would have set up the exact same QF matchup.
