2023 SUNYAC Offseason..Pick-ups,subtractions,etc etc...

As a former band kid normally I joke and say ah dont worry they'll cut all the music and arts down before they ever get to the athletes. And then I remembered the only thing Potsdam is really known for is their music school and they will cut athletics before they cut their music program.

Which makes it really scary to see that the Masters in Music Performance is one of the degrees on the chopping block…

But that is a Masters program, which most people don't go to Potsdam for. If a graduate at Crane (which is more known for it's education programs) wants to pursue music performance, they usually go to places like Eastman (like Rene Fleming did) or Julliard.

Dang. SUNY Potsdam’s enrollment has declined by 43% since 2010. At the same time, staffing numbers have not changed.

The SUNYAC is adding Canton and Morrisville as full members in all sports.

They are adding Alfred State as an associate member of track and field.

They are adding men's wrestling as a SUNYAC sport with Utica, RIT, Ithaca, and St. John Fisher as associates for that new sport

With Geneseo and Brockport leaving, and Canton coming in for hockey, that would leave the SUNYAC at 8 teams for 24-25 at this moment

So now, all of a sudden (obviously), Canton is a viable addition after many schools blocked them for so long.

Morrisville is a bit of an ironic addition. They were at one time full time members, but left because none of their sports programs were competitive in the SUNYAC. (Same reason SUNYIT (now SUNY Poly) were once members but left.) I wonder what convinced them to come back?

Again, interesting that this time Alfred State only joins for one sport, but unlike their similar institutions, Canton and Morrisville, do not join as full time members.

This one I did not expect at all. Especially after what I wrote yesterday, using football as an example. Realignments all over the country just get crazier and crazier...

Well, now I can bust on my RIT friends that they are now part of the SUNYAC. LOL

That's largely correct, though my wife has had several voice students who went to Crane and have performing careers. One of the downsides to having to cut grad. programs is that more of that tuition money stays on campus, rather than being sent to Albany and then distributed from there. Housing and fees are another matter.

I had heard Potsdam has been struggling for close to a decade now and that stat about enrollment down 43% since 2010 certainly matches up.

I hope Potsdam can find a sustainable campus with the downsizing efforts. It’s never fun to see a school close. I hope this Re-working does what they need to stay open, but I honestly wonder if they’ll be able to survive. Their athletic programs haven’t been strong for quite some time and I feel with Canton officially joining the SUNYAC, they become a more attractive option if you’re looking to go to school in Siberia.

Is Potsdam the fourth option now out of Canton, SLU and Clarkson? I would think so and can all 4 continue to survive?

What makes Canton more attractive than Potsdam now that their athletics are on the same footing? I don't know a lot about their school tbh...

Canton is considered a technical college where their focus is on more in demand jobs/careers, whereas Potsdam is the traditional liberal arts college. That basically means Canton is on the rise while Potsdam in falling rapidly academically. That rise and fall will likely carry over to sports soon. As of right now most Canton sports are an absolute joke in terms of talent compared to the other SUNYS, but Id imagine the SUNYAC is banking on the idea as time progresses Canton essentially replaces Potsdam. I wouldn't be shocked if Canton absorbs Potsdam and we have another SUNY Poly situation where the school has 2 campusus, although these ones would be much closer compared to Polys campuses

So the bottom line is that Geneseo and Brockport pulled their athletics programs from SUNYAC and moved to the Elite 8, but the Elite 8 doesn't have a hockey program, so Genny and Brockport hockey found a home in the UCHC. Which means that the hockey teams will be living on a bus and playing most of their games in eastern and south-eastern Pennsylvania (and Maryland- and the Hudson valley).

From the Geneseo press release announcing the move to the Elite 8:

"Membership in the Empire 8 will maintain Geneseo's competitive excellence and prioritize the welfare of student-athletes by cutting travel time in half for regular season conference play. This will result in less time away from campus and allow them to balance personal, academic, and athletic responsibilities at an even higher level."

The move is obviously not going to provide the same benefit in every sport. That was understood from the beginning. The press release is still accurate overall. And unlike the other sports, there are also no 18 or 19 year old hockey players, who are used to lots of travel and bus time.

Could Genny and Brockport have kept just hockey in the SUNYAC instead of jumping to the UCHC, or would that not have been allowed?

Theoretically, yes. But the SUNYAC would have to approve them as associate members for that sport (like Morrisville was all these years; in fact they did that specifically because they left the SUNYAC as a full time member but their hockey team didn't have anywhere to go) and I doubt the SUNYAC was in any mood to do that after being divorced by these schools.

I know I’m a little late to the game but how does Geneseo joining the UCHC actually cut down on travel costs when they still have to travel to play the likes of Manhattanville? That’s not much closer than Plattsburgh, Geneseos farthest SUNYAC opponent.

As pointed out above, the savings come from the reduced travel costs for the more universal sports played on almost every campus. Sports like ice hockey where participation is smaller won't see the same benefit.

The MAC is going at it alone. We won't see them in Reisterstown.
