2023 SUNYAC Offseason..Pick-ups,subtractions,etc etc...

I must be in the bargaining stage of grief because now I'm just hoping Oswego jumps to the Empire 8 too and the conference gets a proper autobid

The issue is beyond hockey. If this is the end of the SUNYAC, where are the remaining teams going full time? The UCHC and NEHC are single sport conferences.

Is there enough alignment in the other sports for the SUNYAC teams left out of the Empire 8 and what's left of the NEHC after Little East/GNAC/MASCAC realignment to form a multisport conference? What becomes of Oneonta and New Paltz who don't play hockey at all?

Do any of the SUNYAC/NEHC remaining schools cut hockey before upending the rest of their athletic departments for it? Plattsburgh and Norwich I think there's little chance but I don't know enough about the rest...

Are the SUNYAC Presidents going to replace Di Camillo? Things have corroded so badly at this point do they need a new voice in the room to try and prevent full collapse?

That’s a big consideration. The Empire 8 isn’t going to take all of them in the other sports or they’d swell to 15-16 teams. If SUNYAC still retains 6 teams, they may stay intact.

Liberty League would be short of an autobid unless some of those grandfathered play-ups stop doing so, and I don't see that ever happening.

It would put Hobart/William Smith in a position to make a decision between staying in an expanded LL or joining the reconfigured E8

If Plattsburgh, Potsdam and Canton moved Liberty you could have enough for an auto bid, Hobart would have to make a decision for sure.

Hobart
Skidmore
Buff State (affiliate)

possible adds

Plattsburgh
Potsdam
Canton
Fredonia
and maybe even Chatham?

This is all speculation of course, but its kind of fun to try to work it all out.

The SUNYAC's breakup is allegedly over travel costs. I can't see Buff State and Fredonia joining a conference that is in mostly the eastern part of NY. Chatham not a chance.

Thank you. Someone finally making sense.

All this talk of certain schools joining E8 or LL are completely forgetting the original reason for this shakeup -- to reduce travel costs. Why would these conferences take certain schools if it will increase their travel costs? And also keep in mind you need to look at the whole school first which is how the decision will ultimately be made, before you even consider one sport, like hockey which will be a secondary decision process.

So, looking at the big picture, does Plattsburgh/Potsdam/Canton even have a conference fit if the musical chairs ultimately involves the dissolution of SUNYAC as a sports conference? For the three North Country schools, keeping the SUNYAC together seems their best bet...

That's why I wanted to poach Oswego. They're geographically a good fit for the E8

This is what concerns me. Brockport and Geneseo citing travel costs basically says “we hate driving to the North Country,” as that was the only really long travel for them, and that’s going to remain a concern for basically ANY potential non-SUNYAC conference the north country schools try to apply to.

As for the reports that more are leaving the SUNYAC: the next dominoes to fall logically would be Buff State and Fredonia, as their average travel distance in the SUNYAC just shot up significantly with the departure of the Rochester-area schools. For sports with full sponsorship, that still leaves Plattsburgh, Potsdam, Oswego, Cortland, New Paltz, and Oneonta, which is enough to survive. Hockey would still have Canton and Morrisville, which is also enough, though it is entirely possible that Morrisville goes to a hypothetical Empire 8 hockey conference as THEIR 6th member.

Exactly. As Knights implies about Oswego, the outlying schools (North Country and Buffalo/Fredonia) have got to be really worried. Do the NC schools join the conference Canton is a full member of? Is there a conference that covers northern New England which makes sense? And what the heck could possibly happen with the extreme western NY schools? Remember, these answers have to relate to the entire school's program before ever thinking about hockey.

Just saw on Eliteprospects that Platty's Carson Gallagher has left the team for Toronto university, he was a top scorer for the past 2 yrs after coming over from secret heart...

Yeah. Not sure what went on there. In other news, Plattsburgh picked up a guy from Hobart. Bulgar I believe.

2 points in 19 games last year.... hardly an even trade! Some other guys will have to step up to fill the void...
