2023 SUNYAC Offseason..Pick-ups,subtractions,etc etc...

I assume they won’t stay in SUNYAC for hockey. This really sucks. So much history and rivalries in that conference.

I don’t understand the reasoning of the move. Geneseo and Brockport would be the only public schools in the conference. They don’t seem like a natural fit.

There is no way the SUNYAC will keep them. Their response I'm sure will be "f*ck off."

As for the E8 having five hockey teams, let's not forget that Utica is supposed to be going D2 (D1 for hockey). So, I don't see E8 being the answer. They will go to UCHC most likely.

As the Geneseo FAR, I can say that the move cuts the travel expenditures by 50% and the kids will be on the buses much less time. That makes sense from both a financial perspective and an academics perspective. The status of the hockey team is TBD. (I'm not aware of any hidden agenda.)

So, they are not going to play any non-conference games?

I still call BS on this reason. 50% savings from what is usually about 2/3 of their schedule? I don't buy that for a second.

You're going to see other schools move to more regional play. It's the wave of the future. I've seen the numbers on the savings and they are significant. It makes sense from an institutional perspective, even if it's not the best move for every team.

The Diii Hockey News Twitter/X post is hinting at more moves in the SUNYAC? I know he recently interviewed both the Genny and Brockport coaches. So who knows…

If you include the affiliate members of the Empire 8 that include Oswego, Cortland and Morrisville then you have your Auto Bid. Based on the hints form DIII News I would guess those are the next dominoes to drop. The question then becomes would Hobart jump ship with Elmira away from NEHC? The new Empire 8 would be a pretty strong conference and would cut down on Hobart travel significantly.

That leaves 2 openings in the NEHC which would probably go to Plattsburgh and then either Canton or Potsdam. It will be very interesting to see where this all plays out.

When I saw this yesterday I immediately thought big savings just in travel. As someone who was very involved in St. Norbert's primary conference move from the MWC to the NACC, I can tell you when we pulled the trigger on it that the travel savings and less missed class time were two huge points that made the move a no-brainer. In 2018, our projected savings annually just on travel alone was $100,000. With inflation, that probably is now around $250-300K per year. That may not sound like a lot of money considering what you see in the Power 5, but to many Division III institutions it is not a small amount of money - even for taxpayer-funded institutions.

A conference with Utica, Oswego, Geneseo, Hobart, and Elmira would be a blood bath

Hold on a second. Let's take a step back and catch our breath.

Assuming nothing else happens in the SUNYAC, none of those hockey teams will be allowed to play anywhere else but in the SUNYAC.

If you are a full member of the SUNYAC and the SUNYAC sponsors a sport, you must play that sport in the SUNYAC. Period. So, Oswego, Cortland, and Morrisville (well, they could because they are just an affiliate member) are not playing hockey in the Empire 8 whatsoever. Only if the SUNYAC totally falls apart.

There is nothing to play out unless more schools (and that would mean the entire school) leaves the SUNYAC.

I know there has been discussion (at both the individual sport level and the conference level) of breaking the SUNYAC into two regions, then uniting the regions for SUNYACS. Either way, we are going to end up with more regional play at some point in the not-too-distant future.

That was the plan during the pandemic. But they ended up cancelling the season instead.

What is creating the speculation is that D-iii Hockey News is reporting that more schools may be leaving SUNYAC. If that happens, the breakup of SUNYAC could be possible.
