2023 D3 Bracketology

Final 4 is Friday/Sunday this year. Friday would be the only issue in Utica. I would be surprised if they didn’t find a way to work around it.

Utica can use the Nexus Center, right next door.

I haven't seen a game there yet, and the capacity seems way lower than The Aud, but I suppose it'll work.

Lots of SRO there.

NO they can't. Games and practices MUST be on the ice the host team uses for at least 50% of their home games. There are documented cases of teams losing the host bid due to these issues.

The NCAA policy has always been "you win, you host" assuming a minimum standard for the facility have been met.

No, it hasn't.

How about the higher seed hosting?

If a Trinity or a Hobart doesn't want to travel, then let the next in line take their places. (Pretty sure that Trinity and Hobart would make that shortish trip, JSYK, but what about a Trine?)

The D-3 hockey calculus remains completely ridiculous. Utterly stupid. If a school isn't willing to travel -or to host- an NCAA event, it shouldn't even be in the mix to begin with.

Why does this s*** pop up every year?

Instead of responding to particular posts, I'll summarize what I want to say here.

Host Sites
2023 -- campus site
2024 -- Trinity College
2025 -- campus site
2026 -- Utica Aud

As for campus sites, it is not entirely true that it will be in the east. They may lean that way, but if circumstances dictate the west, they will choose that.

It MUST be on the EXACT SAME RINK the host team uses for their season. No exceptions. Otherwise, it goes to the next contender. And campus site means campus site. There will be no use of a centrally geographic "neutral" site.

Attendance history DOES NOT PLAY ANY FACTOR WHATSOEVER in choosing a campus host. The ability of the facility to host does. And keep in mind, that's only if a school puts in a bid to host. If someone doesn't want it for whatever reason, they can't be forced to host it. (And there have been some cases where schools play at community rinks which have already melted the ice by mid March.)

As for Utica, it's been said many times that the Comets are willing to be flexible if the school winds up hosting the championship weekend.

It does make me wonder if there is some type of loophole here. The womens team plays their games at the Nexus and the entire facility is considered one now.

Regardless, the Comets could play their Friday game in the 1200 seat (additional 500 of standing room) Nexus Center and sell it out. Would make for a cool atmosphere.

I don't think it's completely out of the question that Utica MAY get the opportunity to host if they are in it and do the semifinals in Nexus and the finals in the Aud.

It will be a stark change from the norm, but I've heard rumblings it might be considered for this year given the other options out there right now...

It would really ruffle some feathers of schools that had to give up hosting due to conflicts. But Utica has to be in the final 4 before it is an issue.

Let's say that Utica wins-out (which is likely) and still has to travel somewhere for a 1st-round game.

Where'd that #1 or #2 PWR go, in that circumstance? And where's the bye?

The D-3 "calculus" remains moronic, unfair, and just plain stupid to boot.

Why even run a National tournament, if it can't be run with a modicum of logic involved?

So 51% is good, and 49% isn't..?

Sorry, but that's just another example of D-3 idiocy.

More concerned about the silly-a** by-laws than it is about any concept of merit or fairness.

Let's not even consider the parking nightmares that would cause......

Considering perennial national power Utica has won a grand total of ONE NCAA Tournament game in their history, you guys are getting a little far out on your skis at this point, aren't you?

Who in the world thinks Utica is going to travel for the first round if they are top two in PWR? The time and date of the first round can be adjusted. It’s been done before.

This is very interesting.

Certainly the Nexus Center would be fine, and I’ve never been against the idea. I just didn’t think they would go against the campus site definition.

One paradox — it could be argued the semifinal round needs a larger facility than the final, especially if the host team losses in the semis.

Yeah, I’ve been keeping that in my mind while planning out my possible travel plans.

I’ve just been keeping quiet so as not to piss off the Utica fans. LOL

Then just go with neutral site selections and forego the campus site selections all together. And it can stop these endless Utica b*tch*ng sessions.

You feel left out?

Considering SNC has played in nine national championship games and won five, no. Especially when you consider that SNC is 2-2 in common opponents with Utica at 0-2-1. The UCHC is terrible and I will believe Utica is worthy of its pairwise stature when/if they ever back it up for a change.
