2023 D3 Bracketology

Actually it was 16-17but Trinity not Amherst. I was corrected yesterday.

I don’t know, looking at the results and records from that 16-17 season I find it hard to believe Platty would’ve hosted Trinity in the first place in that game. Trinity had the better record and season.

It had to have been 14-15 as Scott_TG suggested.

I remember 10 or so years ago, someone out west (Hamline? Gustavus? Maybe Russell or Prez have better memories than me) got screwed out of hosting because their rink had already melted the ice to prepare for renovations, and the NCAA cited this 50% rule in rejecting a proposed alternative.

I remember that, but not the school it happened to.

Your point is a key one. When the NCAA says campus site, they mean your regular home rink. No exceptions.

Remember when U-Mass Dartmouth was the ECAC-NE champ and would’ve earned a home game in the NCAA’s but the tournament was so foreign to them they didn’t know they had to place a bid to host a game. Ended up having to travel to Middlebury to play a game they otherwise would’ve hosted.

It was a little more embarrassing than that.

They did put in an application, but for the following round. They weren’t aware they had to put in a separate application for each specific round. They essentially checked the wrong box.

A) I remember clearly the uproar when the Plattsburgh fans who wanted the Athletic Department to give up hosting the women's frozen four as the defending national champs for a men's quarterfinal had their hopes dashed.

B) If you look at the 2014-15 schedule of both programs the date lines up: March 21, 2015. Plattsburgh women defeat Elmira 3-2 on home ice for their second of four straight national championships and Plattsburgh men lose 5-1 at Trinity in the quarterfinals.

You are correct, just didn't seem that long ago.

Going into the last week of the regular season, here's what I think the bracket would look like

CCC: Endicott (1)
MASCAC: Plymouth State (6)
MIAC: St. Scholastica (T-26)
NCHA: Adrian (T-4)
NEHC: Hobart (T-2)
NESCAC: Trinity (11)
SUNYAC: Oswego (14)
UCHC: Utica (T-2*)
WIAC: Stevens Point (10)

At-Large:
Curry (T-4*)
Plattsburgh (7)
UNE (8)

First Round:

Oswego @ Endicott
Trinity @ Utica
UNE @ Curry
Plattsburgh @ Plymouth State

Quarterfinals:

Plattsburgh/Plymouth State @ Oswego/Endicott
UNE/Curry @ Trinity/Utica
Adrian @ Hobart
St. Scholastica @ Stevens Point

Just 1 thing, at the time Plattsburgh is in first in SUNYAC. Who knows how that will end up. If Plattsburgh wins their final regular season game at Morrisville, Oswego needs two wins the final weekend for first or a win and a tie/OTL to have a deadlock for first. We are in a dark zone for the tiebreakers this season so like I said, who knows!!

I've been using Pts% for when teams have an uneven number of games, and Oswego's is higher than Plattsburgh's by .006, so that's why they're in the auto-bid spot right now

The likelihood of MIAC/WIAC getting first round byes, and then playing one another for a chance to go to the final 4 is asinine. So much for bracket integrity.

Either way, Oswego's would still be higher

Nope !

You're using Winning%, which is not the same as Points%.

Oswego has only played 14 conference games, to Plattsburgh's 15, so the max points they could have earned at this moment are 28 for Oswego and 30 for Plattsburgh, so if you divide total points by the max number of points, you get

Plattsburgh: 23/30 = .767
Oswego: 22/28 = .786

This is also why if Oswego wins out, they will be the 1 seed in the SUNYAC, hope this helps!

If they both win out Oswego will be first, understood. If Plattsburgh wins their final game Wednesday at Morrisville and Oswego wins one and only ties or loses in OT next weekend they will both have 25 pts. I believe this would put Plattsburgh in first due to the tie breaker which would come down to points against each other in conference games. (Plattsburgh won 6-1 and Oswego won 5-1) Plattsburgh with 7 and Oswego with 6. Of course SUNYAC has not been forthcoming with the tie breakers so this could also be wrong. If Oswego goes 1-1 next weekend and Plattsburgh beats Morrisville Wednesday Plattsburgh is the regular season champ. A tight 1. Genny losing last night took them out of the picture for first and more than likely will be at best third place due to the tiebreakers.

Ok, all of that had nothing to do with what I'm talking about besides "If they both win out Oswego will be first". I'm not in the game of predicting who's going to win each game, just using the data in front of me, and that data put Oswego in the auto-bid spot

I understand what you did now. But it is all just a guess anyway because it is the Tournament winner that gets the autobid anyway.

For crying out loud, everybody knows that.

Mock brackets are just for fun and giggles. And give us some idea of the playoff landscape.

But there’s always that guy…
