2023 D3 Bracketology

It's never going to change man. Just accept it for what it is and move on. It's been the same set-up for 30+ years. [/QUOTE]

Well, the seedings used to be made via the BS coach's polls.

There is a more logical progress, as of late.

Fishman'81 I agree that DIII deserves more funding from the NCAA but with the power 5 conferences already threatening to leave and do their own thing, the odds of the NCAA reallocating more from the D1 budget seems even more of an impossibility than it already is.

That is true. There is an off day this year (same for D3 women).

I thought someone once mentioned that the Comets are willing to be flexible if Utica gets to host the championship weekend.

Eshe and the Comets have actually been very accommodating. If there's a glitch this year, it'll be the first one I've seen.

(And, of course, there are new rinks right across the street as well.)

And with the Nexus Center next door, there's more than enough ice for everyone

And like what was said above, if Utica is in the Frozen Four and it's at the Aud, they will sell all ~4000 seats with very little trouble, so they'll make it work with the AHL

The Nexus Center is hosting USPHL Nationals during that time.

Very likely that you have that right.

Possibly, though, having fewer D-3 teams might make for a better division.

The degree of disparity in D-3 is fairly ridiculous.

The NCAA requires that the rink for practices must also be the rink used for the games (Unless that has changed in the last few years)

Correct on this being the requirement in the past. Unsure like you if it's changed. I'm still holding out hope of one year trying to do both the men and the women in Lake Placid. But, the ice time thing will put a wrench in it if all practices have to be on the main sheet.

Wednesday - women's practice day
Thursday - men's practice day/women's semifinals
Friday - men's semifinals
Saturday - women's championship
Sunday - men's championship

Thursday is your toughest day on ice scheduling with four teams needing 90 minute practice time and two full games to play. (plus the playing teams usually get optional 60 minute skate the morning of that normally the non-dress would go to).

As for the rinks across the street: the NCAA has in the past required the host facility be one in which the host team has played at least 50% of their home games that season.

I remember 10 or so years ago, someone out west (Hamline? Gustavus? Maybe Russell or Prez have better memories than me) got screwed out of hosting because their rink had already melted the ice to prepare for renovations, and the NCAA cited this 50% rule in rejecting a proposed alternative.

5 or 6 years ago Plattsburgh men were supposed to host Amherst in a NCAA game. The same weekend The women were hosting the final 4. Plattsburgh had to go play at Amherst (and lost) because the NCAA would not allow a time change for the game or allow practices at the AM Can rink across town.

believe that was actually Trinity. But yes, the situation you described did happen.

This is what I think the bracket would look like through the games of 2/4

CCC: Endicott (1)
MASCAC: Plymouth State (6)
MIAC: St. Scholastica (T-20)
NCHA: Adrian (T-4)
NEHC: Hobart (T-2)
NESCAC: Trinity (T-11
SUNYAC: Oswego (T-15)
UCHC: Utica (T-2*)
WIAC: Stevens Point (10)

At-Large:

Curry (T-4*)
Plattsburgh (7)
Norwich (8)

First Round:

Oswego @ Adrian
Trinity @ Utica
Norwich @ Curry
Plattsburgh @ Plymouth State

Quarterfinals:

Plymouth State/Plattsburgh @ Endicott
Curry/Norwich @ Utica/Trinity
Oswego/Adrian @ Hobart
St. Scholastica @ Stevens Point

As a Plattsburgh fan who enjoys watch both the men and the women, I had blocked that particular memory…

That was the ‘11-‘12 season. Time flys, huh?

Remember when U-Mass Dartmouth was the ECAC-NE champ and would’ve earned a home game in the NCAA’s but the tournament was so foreign to them they didn’t know they had to place a bid to host a game. Ended up having to travel to Middlebury to play a game they otherwise would’ve hosted.

It was 2015 and the Plattsburgh men lost to Trinity. There was no hosting conflict in 2012 as RIT was hosting the women's frozen four.

Plattsburgh men did lose on the road to Amherst in 2012 but they were not on the road due to the women's frozen four.
