2014 Four Nations Cup

Re: 2014 Four Nations Cup

Canada tops Finland 3-1, getting goals from Wakefield, Irwin and Johnston. SOG were 49-12.

The expected Gold Medal game between Canada and the U.S. starts at 10:00PM EST tomorrow (Saturday).

Anybody know why Rattray wasn't playing last night for Team Canada?

The choice of who to sit has been very surprising...Jenner in Game 1...Fortino in Game 2 (vs US!!)...Rattray in Game 3. Clearly not based on being a bubble player as all feature prominently in playing time when in lineup.

On that basis, I'm puzzled why Howe didn't get to play a game.

Re: 2014 Four Nations Cup

Any thoughts on tonight's keepers? (I take it there's no tradition of a set rotation in these affairs.)

Re: 2014 Four Nations Cup

I would expect it to be Lacasse as the most experienced senior goalie of the 3 , but since she was less than stellar last time out, who knows.

Re: 2014 Four Nations Cup

Is Schaus (or even McLaughlin) a worse keeper than Rigsby? I was surprised Rigsby got the nod in the Canada game.

Rougeau obviously has skill and great skating abilities but makes sketchy decisions in her own d zone that at times terrify me to the very soul. The coach should put Fortino in and leave Rougeau out again. Also, is there anyone in this tournament who has had more quality scoring chances than Natalie Spooner? She generates tons of offense with her speed and knows how to drive to the net with her skill and talent, but can never finish, even on the several breakaways she's had throughout this tourney. I can see why she does not play the top line. This is why she needs a Meghan Agosta to play with her, someone who can finish their chances and bury the puck at every good opportunity.

Kelly Terry has been the most pleasant surprise thus far. Very smart on both ends of the ice and great stick skills. I am glad the coach has put her in the lineup every game. She looks like Amanda Kessel at times.

Kelly Terry scored more big goals than anyone for Minnesota last year. She was the fastest player on the team. Worked hard all the time both ends of the ice and was an amazing back checker.

Would be great to see her become serious part of Canadian team. (Love seeing her coaching UM this year!)

I did not know much of Kelly Terry before this week (but knew much of Sarah Davis :p) and will watch her closely. Her speed and stick skills look Kessel-esque at times which stands out a lot amongst the older Canadian team.

And boy am I glad not to see Apps, Ouellette, Wickenheiser, Hefford on the ice at this tournament :D

Personally, I think the weakest D of the 7 and the one I get most nervous about is Larocque. She's also the oldest. I'd say the best has easily been Birchard....still shake my head wondering how she possibly got left off the Olympic team.

Terry hasn't logged a ton of ice time compared to most others, but has not looked at all out of place. Turnbull and Clark have not really played much (or if they have, they've been largely invisible). It probably would make the most sense to sit one of them. But then again there's not been much sense to the roster decisions so far: Rattray was among the most impressive the 2 games she played.

As far as the goalie situation, it could be smart to have saved Schaus for the big game. This gives the US the psychological edge of knowing they've not been beaten with her backstopping them. I have no idea what Canada will do. Do they play Maschmeyer again? She showed a lot of poise vs Finland with the score close. Or go with the vet even though she was shaky vs US last game?

If Terry had had the year she had as a senior one year earlier, I think she'd have been seriously considered for the Olympic team. For some reason, her scoring touch deserted her as both a sophomore and a junior. She did everything else fabulously, and she's a world class player just for her defense, but she couldn't get the puck to go into the net. Fortunately, that changed her last year her.

And, if there's a medical emergency on the ice, she's a trained EMT.

Yes. Larocque is also the slowest of the Ds and unless she has a Ward or Fortino to play with, her game gets very much exposed. I shuddered at the Larocque/Rougeau defense pairing the coach put together in the US game and may need a Xanax for today if that happens again. Agreed that Birchard should have been on the Olympic team. Imagine what a Ward/Birchard pairing would've been like :)

Agreed about the Turnbull/Clark situation. One of them should sit out. At this point if Lacasse's technique doesn't settle itself down her spot should go to someone else. Still cannot believe she only let in 2 goals out of 32 shots!

The commentators also noted Lamoureux asked the US coach to play D, and the coach let her. Is she taking Gigi Marvin role?

I have been SCREAMING for Schaus to get a start in one of these gold medal games over Rigsby.

As a Canada fan I really hope Lamoureux gets a lot of ice time again. Whether it's creating PP situations for Canada, or coughing up the puck....

It was funny seeing the clips on TSN assembled of all the Lamoureux mistakes with Botterill going through each one, telling us how badly she was playing on Wednesday's game :D
