2012 Presidential Election Part 4

Re: 2012 Presidential Election Part 4

Trying to find the link from the news story the day after the Al Smith dinner....

Remember how Romney had joked that the headlines would be "Obama embraced by Catholics; Romney dines with rich people"?

Well, someone was making a big deal the next day over Ann Romney's $1,500 dollar dress...conveniently ignoring that Michelle Obama had a $3,000 dress on that same evening!

Re: 2012 Presidential Election Part 4

Is the stock market finally taking the possibility of a Romney victory seriously? Markets down big again today. Romney said he won't reappoint Bernanke. Only Bernanke's reckless experiment with monetizing the debt has kept the market afloat.

I'm sure Rover, being so much smarter than the rest of us, will soon chime in to tell us that the market is actually anticipating an Obama victory and the increase in taxes on capital gains that will result, and so the professional investors are all taking their profits while they can before tax rates go up.....

Fish: Market today is down for a variety of reasons and what you mention may indeed be a part. But earnings are being looked at critically and for the most part the ones today and yesterday stunk up the joint. Plus Spanish debt was downgraded and Europe always is convenient to blame when we have a triple digit down day here. Such a rotten day for me I won't even bother to look at the totals until later when dinner has had a chance to settle.:(

While I am smarter than most of you, I'd chalk recent market movements up to......nothing to do with politics.

Re: 2012 Presidential Election Part 4

One of the most amusing stereotypes of Ronald Reagan is that he was some crazy cowboy who would start a war with anyone over anything. yeah, that invasion of Grenada really left us bogged down in an unwinnable war, eh?

You'll notice from the historical record that Reagan's policies won the Cold War without a single bullet being fired. Yeah, if you are strong no one will mess with you, and so one of the best ways to deter war is to be ready to fight so that others won't want to fight you.

I may not always agree with what you post but this time-at least about the market movement, is right on the money.

Re: 2012 Presidential Election Part 4

While not disputing the reality of media bias for a second, I'm more inclined to think this was a simple cock-up. To me, the gold standard of media bias was the network reporter who said Senator Goldwater was going to:

"travel to Germany to join-up with the right-wing there", and visit "Hitler's one-time stomping ground" in Berchtesgaden.

And this at a time when there were only 3 networks, and most of us got our news during one half hour period every night. That set a very high bar. One which libstain "reporters" have been trying to clear for decades.

Which historical record is that?

The Forgotten Cold War: 20 Years Later, Myths About U.S. Victory Persist
Reagan Didn’t End the Cold War

Why Neither Reagan Nor the United States Won the Cold War

Remember the shrieks from libstains when he joked about blowing the sh*t out of the Soviet Union during a mic check?

Re: 2012 Presidential Election Part 4

Reminds me of the guy introducing his one hit "in response to a diminishing number of requests." Libstains have lost this one. Get over it. Creedence called him "Ronnie the popular." Pat Brown said he wanted Reagan, and got him, and a premature retirement from politics at the same time. That peanut growing dipsh*t from Georgia also said he wanted Reagan, with the same result.

Thanks, Doc, I was being droll...perhaps too subtle?

..... the market has been stuck in a trading range for quite awhile, though it appears a key support level might have been broken (if you are into technical analysis at all).

After all these years-I no longer look at technical trends. I mostly sit back and collect dividends and occassionally buy something that looks like a bargain and hold it for as long as it takes. The market of course is concerned about the election-but I honestly believe that the market experts do not know which way things will go simply because they do not know what either candidate getting elected will do.

Pakistan endorses Romney. The rest of the world.....

Re: 2012 Presidential Election Part 4

Hmm...we were talking about so-called "voter suppresion" laws, and someone in our group expressed some sympathy....I guess that the idea of each person voting just once does come as quite a shock to some people, and they'll need time to create additional false identities and get the extra IDs to go with them to be ready for the next election (the laws uniformly have been allowed to stand, they are merely stayed from taking effect in this election being "too" close to Election Day.
