Re: 2012 Presidential Election 5: Election Day Countdown

I didn't say it was right, just that is what happens. I pull out my checkbook and that is all they care about.

Again, not saying I am against the ID thing, just not the norm everywhere to need ID, esp small places. Cripes my cousin worked at the bank she goes to about 60 yrs ago. Everyone knows her there! She has a social hour when she banks. No one would even think to ID her. SHe would be offended if they did!

But if she drives, flies or does a handful of other things she would need a picture ID of some sort. That the local bar doesn't card someone due to familiarity doesn't mean they shouldn't have an ID for the rest of the world.

I'm sure there are people who get by just fine without a picture ID in a hundred small towns in America...given enough notice, they could acquire one without too much fanfare.

A long time ago I could have gotten your elderly friend an ID that would say she was 21 so she could go to "Who's On First?"

Re: 2012 Presidential Election 5: Election Day Countdown

How'd you open the account?

Well ****. You got me there. I suppose I did need an id for that. :)

Who needs banks? Money grubbing sobs, anyway. No safer place to keep your funds than your mattress. Just deal exclusively in cash. Certain "industries" have no use for formal accounting practices/paychecks.

Dude... seriously... did you REALLY have to put the united brothel into my head?!

Re: 2012 Presidential Election 5: Election Day Countdown

If they are unable to get an ID maybe they don't deserve the priviliage [sic] of voting.
I've politely stayed away from this thread, and just skimmed to see what the opinions were, but upon reading this, I'd like to state:

Go slip in a puddle of AIDS and die.

It's everyone's right as a citizen of a state of the United States to be part of the election process. (Some, more recently granted that right than others.)

All these folks then can't drive. Don't have credit cards. Don't have any type of bank account. Don't you need ID to go set up welfare? How do you cash your welfare check? Social security check? Again, you can't open a bank account without an ID

For the record, the State of Illinois Unemployment Insurance offices only needs a social security card (or did last time I was laid off), to verify that the slip of paper with a name/number on it matches the computer records that list a name/number. Last time I checked, naturalized citizens are pretty much handed a SSN card without ID, and as long as you don't lose it or change your name, you're good to go.

For the State of Illinois, the following are all acceptable forms of ID:
Cancelled Check (within 90 days prior to application)
• CDTP Certification Form
• Court Order
• Credit Card/Debit Card (major brand)
• Driver Education Certificate
• Government Driver’s License
• Government ID Card (current)
• Illinois Driver’s License (current)
• Illinois ID Card (current)
• Medicare Card with suffix A, J, H, M or T
• Military Service Record (DD214)

• Out-of-State Driver’s License/ID Card (current)
• Passport (valid U.S. or foreign)
• Social Security Card
• U.S. Military Driver’s License/ID Card
• Adoption Records
• Birth Certificate
• Court Order (Change of birth date)
• Certified Grade/High School/College/University Transcript
• Naturalization Certificate
• Passport (valid with complete date of birth)
• Social Security Award Letter (primary beneficiary only)
• U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS)
Forms — I-551 (Alien Registration Card); I-571
(Refugee Travel Document); I-766 (Employment Authorization
Card); I-797A (Notice of Action Status
Change); I-94 (Arrival/Departure Record) with Valid
Passport
• U.S. Visa

Social Security Annual Statement; Social Security
Disability Insurance Statement; Supplemental Security
Income Benefits Statement; Voter Registration

• Pay Stub or Electronic Deposit Receipt

Wells Fargo asks me for my ID everytime I make any transaction. I get ID'd when I use a credit card also. If you don't have an ID right now, you should have one.
Wells Fargo also signed me up for services I didn't ask for when a teller was pressured to make "sales" to improve her numbers for the month. Speaking of fraud...

Genius!!!

So how does this work for bb_dl?

Go in, punch in your social and a pin, and you get a ballot!! No ID to scare anyone! Les's auntie has a ssn - right?

Actually, come to think of it, this is probably the only effective way to enforce voter identification. You wouldn't even need a PIN; a SSN would do. As of the Tax Reform Act of 1990, you need it at birth in order to be claimed as a dependent. Not to mention, if you wanted to investigate voter fraud, you would have a certain department at your disposal. ;)

Come to think of it, do the Amish have SSNs?

Youi can get money from the ATM without sticking your card in it? Which ATM is this again?

ATM requires a debit card, yes. Photo id, no. Although maybe I'll try showing the poll worker my debit card in the next election.

Heh. Poll worker. That just sounds dirty.

I hope you investors got all your money out of the stock market yesterday. Otherwise you've taken a pretty serious beating.

I find it really hilarious that a smart businessman like Trump can go on a Twitter rant while looking completely misinformed about the Electoral College and why the networks called the race when they did (even though Romney was ahead in the popular vote he failed to realize other votes would be coming in for Obama).

Re: 2012 Presidential Election 5: Election Day Countdown

As I said last night (before I passed out): congratulations to the President and Senate Democrats. Both prevailed when the conventional wisdom said they wouldn't.

The President ran exactly the kind of campaign he needed given the situation: his efforts were directed at making Romney an implausible president. "Tax cheat," "gave a guy's wife cancer" "outsourcer of jobs" "rapacious capialist" "doesn't care about people like me" "war on women." And he was able to carpet bomb those swing states with tens of millions of dollars in media to support his narrative. This was smart politics and, frankly, his only chance of winning. And if I'd been in his place, that's exactly how I would have run. Politics ain't bean bag.

Some other takeaways: that "oversampling" of Democrats was bull. And while the turnout was down, the "enthusiasm gap" among Democrats was also bull. The Democratic GOTV efforts, particularly in a comparatively low turnout election, were astounding and IMO made the difference.

On the Senate side, the GOP turned chicken salad into chicken kaka. Two races begging for a GOP victory went Democratic in whole or in part because of social conservative dead endism. Dick Lugar would have coasted to victory in Indiana, but he was defeated in the primary by Mourdock. In Missouri, Curly, Larry or Moe could have beatnen Claire. Unfortunately, the dead enders didn't nominate one of those worthies, instead chosing a guy who made Curly look like a Supreme Court nominee. And there's some evidence this extremism may have hurt Scott Brown, too. It takes a real genius to make abortion a major issue in an election where the vast majority of us weren't even thinking about it.

Ideological purity is a wonderful thing, in a colleagial system. That's not the system we have. And some (mostly social) conservatives need to understand that if they want to win national and statewide races. And future pro-life candidates need to refuse to elaborate beyond a simple statement of their fundamental belief. And avoid like the Angel of Death any question or answer that gets within a mile of discussing rape. They've got to figure out an answer and stick to it. And stay away from hypotheticals, even though their opponants and the media with skewer them for it.

I think anyone running for President as a Republican had better be bi-lingual or send away for Rosetta Stone. But it will take more than that and more than a brown skin to win over Latinos. Immigration surely is a singular issue. During the primaries we had some serious debates among conservatives around here over Rick Perry's seeming "soft" position on illegals. Namely, that children of illegals, who had been graduated from Texas high schools, should be permitted to pay in state tuition rates. The GOP needs to find some balance between "open borders" and punishing kids who have done nothing wrong except be born. But that's not all. The GOP needs to reach beyond boiler plate rhetoric about "boot straps" and embrace policies which reward honesty and hard work. Policies which offer a route into the middle class. The GOP is long on "stick" and short on "carrot." It's possible to take a more enlightened approach to the illegals already here and enforcing our immigration laws as strictly as possible.

Reaching out to African Americans is also vital. Generations of nearly unanimous support of Democrats probably can't ever be overcome. But as more and more African Americans rise to the middle class, they are more likely to be receptive to the GOP message. Any improvement in GOP vote totals among African Americans, no matter how small, could be critical. It's not just a matter of reaching out. They have to reach out and mean it. Nominating black candidates is part of it. But by no means all.

Finally, there's been a lot of talk today about voter ID. While it is certainly true that supporters believe all sorts of nonsense goes on in inner city precincts (the official at BHO's polling place wearing an Obama hat comes to mind). An unchecked torrent of unverified voters. So yes, supporters of voter ID hope that by changing the status quo, it will disadvantage Democrats. But Democrats, rather than admitting their firm belief that the status quo advantages them, offer emotional, specious arguments ("poll tax" "disenfranchise" etc). Polls from WaPo and NYT found overwhelming support for voter ID (among minorities, too). And accomodations can be made for the tiny percentage of those who are too poor and/or infirm to easily obtain ID. So why not join the rest of the civilized world and require voters to identify themselves?

Like the man said: "The people have spoken. . .the b*stards!"

So the next discussion now that the election is over is the fiscal cliff on 12/31?

Everyone's taxes go up if nothing gets done.

I thought Obama intends to work to extend the current rates? I could be wrong of course...

Re: 2012 Presidential Election 5: Election Day Countdown

I like it in principle, but just think of how many ID thieves are stealing SSNs over our digital infrastructure now. The PINs will surely be deciphered too.

Re: 2012 Presidential Election 5: Election Day Countdown

IMO these are conservative ideologues who are terrified of 'communism' rather than smart money managers with legit concerns. Here's the thinking...folks who are smart money managers that had serious concerns would have been smart enough to know that Obama was a pretty decent favorite and got out well before now. Only those on the right would have believed the right media and that Romney would win...and then went into extreme white knuckle panic mode when they found out that they were snowed by Dick Morris and Karl Rove (again).

It probably goes a few hundred more points and then proceeds back up. It will be at that point that the ideologues will be relieved of their money.
