2011-12 Vermont Season Thread (Vezina & Conn Smyth trophy edition)

Re: 2011-12 Vermont Season Thread (Vezina & Conn Smyth trophy edition)

One goal against a mediocre St. Lawrence team, and that coming because of a 5-3 power play. I'd like to say they're some signs of hope, but there aren't. We suck with a capital S!

Ehhh, you're ultimately right, but it easily could have been 4 or 5, UVM had several great chances that Moss made some great saves on. I don't know what happened on the UVM no-goal that had to be reviewed just into the 2nd period since it was on the far end from where I was sitting, but the review was quite long, so it must have been really close.

It was a pretty fun game to watch, sloppy at times, but pretty evenly matched with 2 pretty good skating teams. The gut is a pretty nice barn to watch a game, definitely glad I made the trip over.

Here's what Sneddon had to say about the disallowed goal in the article in the burlington free press (http://www.burlingtonfreepress.com/...Vermont-2-1?odyssey=tab|topnews|text|Sports):

In the second period, a lengthy review failed to result in an apparent goal by UVM’s Sebastian Stalberg. Closing quickly on the right side, Stalberg appeared to slam the puck past Moss, but neither the goal judge nor the referee signaled score.

After both referees studied the replay for several minutes, the no-goal call held, though Sneddon said referee Tim Benedetto explained that though the puck entered the net, the replay did not offer sound to see when the whistle had blown.

“We didn’t have sound, so he sees the puck is in the net and he doesn’t know when he blew the whistle and he can’t verify if it’s a goal or not,” Sneddon said. “That’s tough to swallow.”

“I don’t know why the goal light didn’t go on ... but it was in the net and they had called no goal on the ice. It’s a tough pill to swallow because the kids saw it was in the net.”

Sneddon's gotta go...

This is pretty pathetic and he's the guy in charge. 22 wins in 08/09 followed up with 17 in 09/10 and just 8 last year is an alarming trend especially when they have just 3 victories this season. Sneddon's overall record at UVM has been pretty good given the situation he inherited at the beginning. This is Sneddon's 9th campaign and Vermont has 6 winning seasons during those years. But, he is trending downwards and seems to have too many conflicts with players. The UVM style is dull, boring, and uninspired. The only problem I have with Gutterson is that it is not full and that's because of the product. I personally dislike Sneddon's tactics with the media. He seems quick to throw kids under the bus when things are going bad and to toot his own horn when they're going good.

Gilligan had his flaws but even when they were going bad, they were fun to watch. The competition is better now but this doesn't mean the team can't play an up-tempo brand of hockey. Maybe it has changed a bit this year but perhaps this is because the kids are tuning out Sneddon as other posters have suggested.

I always found it strange that UVM brought in an unproven Harvard/Union guy as the team prepared to leave ECAC. Union improved over his tenure but even his best season was mediocre 13-13-6. It is hard to argue with the 2 recent trips to the NCAAs but the program is now stale if not spoiled.

If we're stuck with Sneddon for a few more years, can we at least bring back George Commo? He'd find a way to make this brand of hockey sound exciting!

May be just rumors, but it would not surprise me at all considering how this year has gone. From one fan's viewpoint, the team does not look like they have jelled for what ever reason ( injuries, lack of playing consistently on the same line etc)
I would hope there would be some loyalty to the program, but who knows.
Could Fallon be filling such a void ?

If we lose Paliotta and Brickley lose we will be in big trouble. I bet Sneddon leaves shortly after. Why isn't the Gutt selling out? It sold out every game when I was there except for a few around the holidays.

Re: 2011-12 Vermont Season Thread (Vezina & Conn Smyth trophy edition)

Let's not jump the gun here...Brickley is in the USA developmental team camp. Cant read anything into his absence.

Re: 2011-12 Vermont Season Thread (Vezina & Conn Smyth trophy edition)

Granted, there have been many empty seats at the Gut lately, but I actually think those seats are season ticket holders just not bothering to come, thus they have been paid for and unused.

Re: 2011-12 Vermont Season Thread (Vezina & Conn Smyth trophy edition)

According to Ted Ryan's blog, Brickley and Paliotta are staying put. He also says this in regard to Girgensons: "Girgensons, the leading scorer for the Dubuque Fighting Saints of the USHL (12-14-26), is scheduled to join Vermont next September, though he might never pull on a UVM jersey if he becomes a first-round NHL draft pick next spring." Sounds like there's a good chance this mythical savior of the UVM hockey program might never make it to Burlington. We shall see. Sneddon also states he doesn't think the team's dismal play is hurting recruiting. Don't know how true that is, but what else is he going to say?

This is impressive compared to some coaches at the D-1 level!!:)

I agree that it is impressive. But despite this success, the program is in a lull. "What have you done for me lately" doesn't always apply in college sports but the expectations should be higher when a team is only a few seasons removed from a Frozen Four appearance.

Re: 2011-12 Vermont Season Thread (Vezina & Conn Smyth trophy edition)

With regards to Brickley and Paliotta. We wont know the real truth until the CHL trading deadline of January 7th. Can you imagine the pressure those teams are giving these two..."come to our team and develop under one of the most respected D coaches in Canada on a winning team or stay in Vermont and maybe develop on a losing team under Joe Gasparini???" Thats not fair!

Re: 2011-12 Vermont Season Thread (Vezina & Conn Smyth trophy edition)

I wonder how much the current lull has to do with the transition from a team that had most of it's players stay all 4 years to a team that now (with better players) has to deal with the possibility of players moving on in 2 or 3 years. That gives less time to develop players in the system and also makes it a little less of a team atmosphere I would think. When you have players that need to do well in order to get that big contract, that can also drastically change how a player plays. How many highly drafted players have panned out for UVM? Torrey. is that it? It seemed for a while that Kevin was getting his teams to overachieve by playing good physical hockey with strong defense. We would grind out games. Now it seems we are prone to low energy and stupid mistakes not to mention we seem to lose 2 players a year. It probably would help with recruiting if we get a new building, but our recruiting has been really good compared to the past and the results just aren't there. I think the issue may be the current coach's inability to get the best out of our highest recruited players.

Re: 2011-12 Vermont Season Thread (Vezina & Conn Smyth trophy edition)

I still think this team is going to be good next year. We are losing NOTHING and gaining a lot as long as there are not any unexpected departures. I think Girgensons shows up, Brickley stays and McCarthy will redshirt and give us two more years. Losing him really did devastate the team this year.
