2010 NHL Off-Season: Sather is a dink

Re: 2010 NHL Off-Season: Sather is a dink

The Islanders have apparently offered Ilya Kovalchuk a 10 year, $100 million deal.

Fun fact: The Isles are currently $9 million under the salary floor.

Other fun fact: If Kovalchuk accepted, the Isles would be spending $19.2 million on Kovalchuk, Rick DiPietro and Alexei Yashin next year.

JFC. Yashin? YASHIN? YASHIN?! Didn't he like, retire or something about 10 years ago??? You know what I mean.

He and Bobby Bonilla are still collecting their coin.

He was bought out. He's been playing in the KHL since 2007-2008. That 10 year contract takes a while to go away when it's bought out. :D

Actually, I think until recently at the earliest, Randall Cunningham is still getting paid by the Vikes.

Amazing things, those contracts. I chose the wrong business (as agents get a cut, too, which you MAY have known about). ;)

I've loved Gagne as long as he's been a Flyer, but he's clearly on the downside of his career. He may have one or two good years left, but he's just not as explosive as he used to be. That being said, I'd much rather them try to get rid of Hartnell, but it doesn't look like thats going to happen.

With that much money invested in defense, whoever plays goal should be irrelevant.

You really feel that way? I personally can't believe Philly is banking on Leighton as their #1--none of their fans seem to like it either.

The Bruins have stepped up their in-house PR to talk about how great of a guy Savard is to his teammates, despite stories contrary to that circling about. Looks like they're going to have to live with it.

Just curious, but where are the stories about Savard being a bad teammate? It's completely overstated. The guy has been a very good playoff performer. Isn't that more important?

I think it has more to do with Neely being named President and him not liking Savard's "soft" game.

Thought Chicago was the only team facing a salary cap reduction next year? Nope! Boston next up with a significant penalty (almost a 1.8M reduction in next years cap). Nine teams total face cap reduction.

I thought Jeremy Jacobs was still cheap? :p

They got killed by Rask's performance bonuses, but apparenlty Recchi also had a games played performance bonus that he hit that worked against them. If anyone is interested, you can view a list of available performance bonuses here, starting at page 260. Additionally, I think that there is a lot of misconception around how the LTIR works with the cap.

Personally, I wish the penalties were even more severe. It's a joke that the rich teams can get away with their mistakes by burying contracts in the minors. I thought the point of the salary cap was to level the playing field?

On the goaltending point, I don't think Philly is done looking for help, just that they're not going to chase after Turco or Nabokov nor be looking to trade for Thomas. I'd imagine Philly is bummed out that guys like Ellis and Niittymaki are gone already though.

The stuff about Savard being bad in the room is stuff people are talking about out of the press. I've spoken with a few folks that are a bit closer to the scene and a bit more involved in things around the Bruins and their opinions of Savard are not very high.

You are apparently spot on about Neely's thoughts though, he's not a huge fan.

He's not worth $5 million dollars anymore, but he's still a good 2nd line winger who will pot 20-30 goals and is only 30. I agree about Hartnell though.

I doubt the Flyers were going to offer $2M to Niittymaki after knowing all to well his problems with consistency and after publicly referring to him as "damaged goods." They screwed up signing Leighton the day before a buyer's market, and obviously felt that he wasn't a step down from Ellis or Mason (which everyone else knows is a hilarious mistake in judgment). I do think they're still after Turco, and that he'll be a target when Gagne is traded.

Unfortunately neither of them wanted to move to Cali.

Hamhuis decided to play near where he grew up in BC, can't fault him for that. Martin got a glowing recommendation of Pittsburgh from Jordan Leopold. Perhaps if the Kings had a former Gopher to help them recruit things would've been different.

That was always the knock on him with the Rangers, and even when he was in Hartford, was that he was monumentally full of himself. Is it even newsworthy at this point?

Farkin' Setoguchi gets 36 freaking points and still hits a bonus (20 goals)
