2010 NHL Off-Season: Sather is a dink

Re: 2010 NHL Off-Season: Sather is a dink

I'm serious. It's not anything significant, it was only a few hundred/thousand (?) but he was still getting paid well after he was gone. An obscene amount of time.

Considering NFL contracts arent guaranteed I highly doubt that.

Re: 2010 NHL Off-Season: Sather is a dink

Other fun fact: If Kovalchuk accepted, the Isles would be spending $19.2 million on Kovalchuk, Rick DiPietro and Alexei Yashin next year.
Well, at least one of them will actually play for the Isles next year.

Just curious, but where are the stories about Savard being a bad teammate? It's completely overstated. The guy has been a very good playoff performer. Isn't that more important?

I think it has more to do with Neely being named President and him not liking Savard's "soft" game.
Have you really not heard any of the rumblings about this the past few years, or are you just taking this stance because someone outside Boston is presenting it?

I'm with J.D. on this one. I never heard anything about it until last week.

Looks like Ciskie got into a sparring match with the web guy of the Thrashers, and is losing. :D

On Twitter. @benthrashers and whatever Ciskies twitter name is.

Out of curiosity (and the lack of seeing ANYTHING remotely substantial in regards to this):

What can Chicago do (realistically) about Huet?

Also, the players Chicago acquired in the Versteeg and Ladd trades... Does anyone know anything about them?

I'm just curious since I doubt Detroit's going to be doing really much of anything this offseason... Though getting rid of Osgood's contract entirely would be good. Why pay big bucks for a #2 guy even if he's a HOF former #1 guy?

Last thing I heard was that Huet's going to be sent to Rockford, and Huet's agent has been talking to European teams.

With Nabokov, Theodore, and Turco all UFA's getting little interest, there's no way Thomas or Huet has any kind of trade value.

Not possible. Nothing within the Thrashers organization is capable of this foreign concept called "winning"

There was never any doubt that Huet's trade value was zilch. Unlike Thomas, Huet's body of work suggests nothing better than career backup. Like Thomas, however, he was paid way more than his actual worth.

So Huet would turn into the Blackhawk's version of Alexei Yashin?

Or if Huet signed with a KHL or other European pro league, would a contract buyout be part of the deal?

I guess I'm not certain how such a thing works out.

I've heard the "rumblings", but they've been quiet here when you consider how he's performed--especially in the playoffs. Go back and look at the emotion he shows in the playoffs. I see a guy who wants to win. I haven't heard former teammates in Boston, Julien, Chiarelli...haven't really heard any of that here other than what his reputation was. Like I said, it's completely overstated.

What I don't think is, is that Neely may be the driving force here.

Agreed. I have been in Boston for the last two seasons and watched the Bruins a lot. I never heard anyone talk about him being a problem. And the playoff performance has spoken much more loudly than any supposed rumbling.

I'm not sure. The (one) article I read seemed to imply that the Euro team would pay him some amount, and the Hawks would be on the hook for the remaining part to avoid having to buy him out, but that seems like such a giant CBA violation that it's beyond belief.

Re: 2010 NHL Off-Season: Sather is a dink

Supposedly the Kings are "out" of the Kovalchuk race as in they aren't raising their offer, and it sounds like he may end up getting close to a 100 million dollar contract.

The next crazy story is that SKA St. Petersburg in the KHL offered Kovalchuk $36 million for 4 years. Supposedly he said he wanted $40 million.

I have no idea what to believe anymore but the salary request stories seem to all come away saying the same thing in that he wants better than $9 million a year. Bonkers. Any year before the last two had he been open to bidding from everyone, he could've gotten his money easily. Now? No way, unless he wants to end up on a bad team. Self-fulfilling prophecy sort of crap.

This is correct...essentially, the player is loaned to a European team and the salary vanishes off of the cap...and no so amazingly enough, no CBA violation. My guess is that the player has to be willing to go as well. Personally, if I'm in Huet's shoes, at that stage of my career, I'd tell the Blackhawks to pound sand and make them send me to the minors.

Edit: Oh, and I forgot to mention....know which team has been in this situation before with their goalies? That's right! Your Chicago Blackhawks!

Belfour and Hasak?

Belfour and Hasak?

Khabibulin 2 years ago. Obviously it didn't come to pass, but he was placed on waivers right before the season, went unclaimed, and the Hawks' talked to teams in the KHL about taking him on. This was after the Huet signing.

Addiitonally, shipping players off to Europe to avoid salary is not unprecedented. The Devils did it with Vitali Vishnevski.

I'm with Brian Burke - this is not a salary cap league. Anytime you allow teams to bury money/carry dead contracts, you can't call it a slary cap league.
