2010 NHL Off-Season: Sather is a dink

Re: 2010 NHL Off-Season: Sather is a dink

As a Rangers fan I have been waiting for this day to come:

D Wade Redden has been placed on waivers.

Do you know if we had to do this for salary cap purposes?

I'm not objecting to it one bit, I was just curious where that puts us cap-wise.

Self edit:

according to NHL numbers...the Rangers are at $63.1 million right now and the cap is 59 I believe.

So does Redden have to be claimed in order for the Rangers to get half his salary off the books?

No one is going to claim him, he'll get sent to the minors or choose to just sit, and his cap hit will be off the books.

He goes to the AHL and his whole salary is off the books.

They can get rid of him for good, potentially, by bringing him back through re-entry waivers and then someone claims him. The Rangers would then be on the hook for 50% of his contract. Only way the Rangers do this is if a team works out a deal with them to do it as that would add $3.25 million to their cap.

Doing it this way, they can just bury him in the AHL and his full salary is off the books. The Rangers are now $2 million below the cap.

But, Redden is on the summer cap (NHL Cap +10%) until the end of his contract. It still hurts the Rangers a little bit during the offseason, but it all depends on what he does after he clears. Apparently, his wife just had a child a couple of days ago and if he has too much pride to play in the A, he could retire. With a newborn, I don't see Redden being loaned to a European team any time soon.

He gets all of his money regardless of where he's playing. Summer cap doesn't mean squat since no one goes that egregiously high with salary. He'll end up in the AHL making a boat load of money because Glen Sather is a boob.

Oh, I know he'll get all of his money. Sather said no matter what Redden's decision is, they'll honor his contract. Redden, despite his bad play, is a professional so I'm not sure whether he'd be any problem in Hartford (bad talking the organization to prospects ala Rissmiller), but if he chooses to retire or go on loan to someone in Europe, I'm sure the Rangers will have no problem with that.

It'd be up to the Rangers to work out a deal to send him to Europe. It's what Chicago will do with Huet and what Washington's already done before with Nylander.

Of course, now the Islanders are without Mark Streit for six months with a torn rotator cuff and torn labrum. They'll be in the market for a defenseman but I doubt Redden would be high on that list.

Apparently, the Rangers have given Redden's agent the responsibility of finding him a European team if he wants to go there.

And unless Redden comes up through re-entry waivers, the Isles aren't even going to remotely think about taking on that contract.

Agreed. Although with Streit headed to LTIR, they'll be under the salary floor again. Strange bedfellows and all. I figure that they'll make a call to Edmonton to save them from Sheldon Souray. The Oilers didn't put him on waivers yesterday which was, to say the least, peculiar.

Souray was put on waivers July 2nd.

Edit: Hell dude, you wrote about it

:p

The Boozin' Wall must've gotten off light. He's playing in tonight's preseason game against Vancouver.
