2010 DII Football

Re: 2010 DII Football

Simon Fraser wins in a wild one. UBC had it on the seven yard line, no time left, and couldn't punch it in. This game just had everything. A streaker, a drunk pops into the radio booth to ask the score, somebody jumped the UBC mascot, and the radio broadcasters were last minute call ins who I believe they were called in from a bar.

27-20 Clan.

Line of the game????

Exhibition game my *ss!!!

The radio drunks there were saying that this game probably just put the matchup back on the map in BC. It kinda sucked with both of them in the CIS and Canadian West. Gotta wonder if this nudges UBC closer to going NCAA. If not this year, the next 2 or 3 years when SFU's young team is a lot more experianced. Game easily could have been a blowout for SFU as well.

Re: 2010 DII Football

Not a whole lot of people sitting at the happy football table last nite. Michigan Tech, Northern Michigan, Minnesota State, Nebraska-Omaha, and Bemidji all lost. Really kinda bummed about Tech losing though. Would have things even more interesting if Tech had made it to Halloween weekend Undefeated. Oh well.

Re: 2010 DII Football

I gotta say I'm happy. Duluth pounds a decent Winona team 59-17 and St. Cloud has another solid win against Mankato 31-17. Also, Augustana continues to make the Huskies loss look not-so-bad.

Re: 2010 DII Football

Pace @
Assumption
- As wide open as what the NE-10 is right now, Pace isn't one of the teams with a shot right now, but Assumption does. The Greyhounds need to have a statement game here with the Setters.

didn't exactly put up a lot of points, but did come away with a 20-0 win. limited pace to 162 yards of total offense... assumption once again controlled the clock with 38 minutes of possession. defense had 4 ints. looks like pace only crossed the assumption 40 twice, once to the 38 before getting picked off and then they managed to get down to the assumption 9 before missing a field goal

Meh, we figured Tech was due for a loss, and it makes sense that it would be at SVSU's homecoming game. At least they aren't going into the last half of the season with an inflated sense of who they are!

Re: 2010 DII Football

Ehhh, I though that Saggy wouldnt have it's act together enough to hold off Tech. They've a lot of last minute meltdowns.

Re: 2010 DII Football

We just don't play well there, for whatever reason. Throw in the homecoming factor, and our D maybe being a little cocky, and you could smell the loss.

True. MTU could still make the playoffs, just going to be a tougher road to do so with a loss already. Going to a tough looking Hillsdale next week. Ferris is likely to be exposed as a paper bulldog next weekend with a trip up to Northern. Best thing MTU has going for it that they have Northwood, GVSU, and Northern all at home at the end of the year.

SNOW BOWLS. :D

Re: 2010 DII Football

Snow bowls are a blast as long as you have the proper gear to be out in one. That and if it's cold enough so that it's not a wet sloppy snow. I would rather have it in the 20's than 30's. And they are a total hoot if you have some team from down south that has a bunch of guys that have never seen snow. 2001 semi-final with Catawba. Those guys just had, "dang it's cold out here." look on there faces as they came out for warmups. Good times!!!

Re: 2010 DII Football

Bemidji State hosted Wayne (NE) State last October 10th, and it was 29 and snowing. Now, it's not like Nebraska is exactly "down south," but those kids looked like they had traveled to the arctic circle. Good times...

As an aside, a year later, and it's been in the mid 70's here lately. Amazing to see that it was 29 and snowing almost exactly a year ago.

Yeah, Nebraska guys should have been able to handle that. Not like they were from Mississippi where if they see a snow flake they hit the panic button and make a run on the grocery store for survial stuff.

Re: 2010 DII Football

Games this weekend.

Saturday 16, 2010

Noon

Ashland @
Wayne State (Mich.)
- Bit of a budding rivalry between the two schools, should be a good game on the Lodge.

1 pm
New Haven @
American International
- 3 teams are currently tied for the NE-10 lead right now at 3-1, and two of the three are in this game. Must watch football right here.

Mercyhurst @
Edinboro
- A pair of 4 and 2 squads going at it in Western PA. A win here would keep MC's Playoff hopes alive, and with California (PA) coming to Erie next week, the Lakers need to be playing some very sharp football for a while here.

Assumption @
Merrimack
- The only reason why these two teams aren't in the top of the conference is because they've only played 3 conference games instead of 4. Winner of this game stays tucked in right behind the two possible teams that would still be 4-1 in conference play after this weekend in the NE-10 title hunt.

Ferris State @
Northern Michigan
- Earlier, I would say that Northern Michigan is the clear favorite here, as Ferris has been beating up on the weakest part of the GLIAC lately. However, the problem for NMU right now is overcoming the GVSU "Hangover". Its bit of a statistical trend for teams in the GLIAC to lose again the week after they play GVSU. And given that Carter Kopack, the Wildcat's QB, is now out with a torn Achilles, things don't look good for the Cat's. However, the Bulldogs could be looking forward to next weekend when they host GVSU and could be looking past a wounded Wildcat team that still has plenty of fight left in them, and hasn't been slapping around Tiffin and ODU lately.

Stonehill @
Pace
- Earlier this season Stonehill beat Pace 41-33 at home in a non-conference matchup. This one counts for the NE-10, and winner gets out of the conference cellar.

Bentley @
Southern Connecticut
- Bentley could make the winner of the AIC-New Haven game very happy as SoConn is the third team that's in the 3 way tie for first place in the NE-10.

1:30 pm

Michigan Tech @
Hillsdale (8)
- Tech makes a long road trip down to Michigan's Amish Country for their most difficult road trip of the year. Last week they got beat by a Saginaw Valley squad that had finally put it together. Hillsdale has some close calls besides the GVSU game. They had a shootout with Lake Erie earlier this year, and while the Storm is quickly getting a rep as a scrappy bunch, that shouldn't be happening for the 8th ranked team in the nation. MTU does have the horses to run with the Chargers in this game.

2 pm

Upper Iowa @
Minnesota State
- UIU is having the kind of season that makes schools want to have their homecomings be scheduled with them coming. Sadly for the Mavs, they had homecoming last weekend.

Mary @
Minnesota-Duluth (1)
- Ummmm.... Yeah, its homecoming week at UMD. Mary and PC are the lambs that are coming in for a slaughter. Eh, on the bright side, the Penalty Box members would have a semi-legit reason to be on campus all day drunk on Saturday. ;)

Bemidji State @
MSU Moorhead
- Bemidji needs this win here to keep their heads above .500 on the season.

Fort Hays @
Nebraska-Omaha
- UNO needs this win here if they're going to finish at .500 on the season.

Southwest Minnesota 0
St. Cloud (24)
- Don't look now, but St. Cloud only has one loss on the year, and other than a roadie to Duluth on Halloween weekend, everything else on their schedule looks winnable. 9-2 might just get them into the playoffs, especially if UMD and Augustana both go undefeated as they don't meet each other. Not bad for a crew that was having the words "Budget Cuts" tossed around at them.

5 pm

Simon Fraser @
BYE
- After a huge win against cross-town rivals UBC in a very wild Shrum Bowl, the Clan couldn't have picked a better weekend to face BYE. The Clan should win by 2 touchdowns easy. ;)

Re: 2010 DII Football

Acckk!!! Almost forgot to do last weekend's scores......

Friday, October 8th

Merrimack 28
Bentley 31
- Bentley with a squeaker of a win. Bentley proved the old adage of hanging onto the football longer than the other guy is usually a good thing.

Simon Fraser 27
British Columbia (CIS) 20
- A wild one to be sure. The drunks on the radio calling the game said it best. Exhibition Game My *BUM*. These two teams were playing for nothing but pride, and the Clan got the bragging rights for this year with only 6 days to get ready to play under CIS rules instead of NCAA rules. Next year the game is at SFU and will be played under NCAA rules.

Saturday, October 9

Michigan Tech 31
Saginaw Valley 43
- First loss of the year for the Huskies. The Cardinals held it together for once against a good squad.

Pace 0
Assumption 20
- Not a bad little whoopin there.

American International 27
Saint Anselm 7
- Good win here for the Yellowjackets.

Findlay 10
Ferris State 23
- Ferris continues to feast on the weaker members on the South Division of the GLIAC.

Mercyhurst 28
IUP 27
- Nail-biter here. Way to go Lakers!!

St. Cloud 31
Minnesota State 17
- St. Cloud wins Mankato's homecoming game and claims the Traveling Trainers Trophy.

Nebraska-Omaha 28
Washburn 40
- Not a good first road game of the year for the Mavericks of UNO.

Bemidji State 14
Concordia-St. Paul 20
- The Beavers had looked somewhat promising this year.

Northern Michigan 7
Grand Valley (2) 28
- A solid effort here from NMU. Just got off to a slow start early, almost like they were too amped up to play. Clean up the play in the first quarter and things would have been very interesting in Allendale.

Wayne State (Mich.) 28
Lake Erie 16
- The Storm is quickly picking up a reputation as being a scrappy bunch of guys that don't ever give up. That should earn em some wins later this year, namely when they host Tiffin and ODU.

Winona State 17
Minnesota-Duluth (1) 59
- Talk about your statement games. Winona is always a good squad, and UMD goes out and whoops em. The only team that the Bulldogs didn't drop 30+ on this year was a pretty good Central Washington squad in the first game of the year. Scores like this make me nervous about the playoffs.

Actually they did drop 35 on Central Washington.

Re: 2010 DII Football

Cal U makes the big time!!! http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/news/story?id=5684400

"Roy Yarbrough, a professor at California University of Pennsylvania who consults with schools on choosing new mascots and symbols, said Ole Miss could spend $100,000 or more for costumes, letterhead and marketing fees.

He said there's still a risk the bear will be rejected, citing the example of a school in Pekin, Ill., that once had a racial epithet for Chinese people as its mascot. They changed it in the 1980s, but it's still a sore issue.

"If no one accepts the new mascot, Colonel Reb could make a comeback," he said."
