2010 DII Football

Re: 2010 DII Football

Tech puts on a Homecoming show and rolls over ODU, 45-6. Now, two tough road games at Saggy and Hillsdale will prove just what this team is worth. Saggy is down, but we don't always play well there, and they played a potent Hillsdale squad about as well as they could in a 35-21 loss this afternoon.

Wayne uses home field advantage to hand NMU their first GLIAC loss, 28-16.

Grand Valley looked like Grand Valley against Tiffin, in a 71-10 win. :p

Conversation in our apartment:

me: :jaw drop: Wow... Grand Valley beat Tiffin 71-10
FM: Haha, Tiffin scored on you!

;)

That loss to Wayne State smarts a little. :(

That TD was against the 2's anyways. the Fieldgoal was given up by the starters.

Eh, it was the first time that GVSU had hung 70+ on somebody since WSU in 2001, or even 60+ since Gannon in 2005. One thing about Martin, he was just happy to sit on a three TD lead and yell at the other side to give up. They actually coached the 2's and 3's yesterday. No Dive Right, Dive, Left, and just to keep em guessing, Dive Middle. Bad news for the GLIAC. ;)

I also saw about the oddest thing I've ever seen at a football game yesterday. Their marching band packed up and left the game at about midway thru the 3rd quarter. I know it was wet and rainy and had been coming down pretty hard around then, but ****, you guys got rain coats. Suck it up kids. If I was a Tiffin Alumni that had to sit thru that, I would have been Mad as Hell about the band leaving.

Re: 2010 DII Football

I could see packing up midway through the 4th, but I agree that's pretty lame.

Yeah, that, but just hanging around til 0:00 to do the fight song quick, that I could see, but just to pack all up and leave the stadium? Downright UnAmerican!!!

Wood instruments like clarinets are obviously very vulnerable to moisture.

That's why we bring kazoos instead :D

Lord help everyone if we find vuvuzelas.

The only schools I've seen do that are the tiny BFE high schools who only field a "marching" band for Homecoming.

I have seen games where the woodwinds (flute/piccs, clarinets, saxes) pack up the instruments but stay in the stands, and the brass hang around.

Also, I have sat through games where the other team hung 70 on us. It blows, but it builds character. Tiffin should sit in the box and feel shame.

Thats because the woodwinds are all a bunch of sissies!!!!

Yeah, packing their instruments up I could see, but for everybody to just pack up and leave.......

Beavers win their homecoming game, and get to take the traditional dip into Lake Bemidji.

Also rumor has it that there was some sort of shirt that talked about how "beating the Cocks (Upper Iowa) would make their Beavers Wet" haven't been able to find pictures to confirm this yet....

I saw them jump in back in my day up there with a little snow on the ground...

I'm pretty sure there was one year where they had to cut or break the ice to do so.

If I'm not mistaken, I do believe they start releasing Regional Rankings this week.

NWMSU was the current holder of The Man title, so that game unified the title.

Abilene Christian now currently holds the title of "The Man" now. I'm pretty sure I had all of the dates from 1988 to 1990 filled out, but I can't currently find that research I had from them and this was the most up to date copy of the list I had. I used this website here.... http://michigan-football.com/ncaa/ncaa_ii.htm and I pretty much used that site from there on to determine "The Man". It does get harder to figure out when teams moved up back then, but usually poking thru their older media guides will give you the dates you need, and you also might fight the info to confirm what division a school was when it played somebody who my have been a holder of the title belt then. If anybody can fill in those missing dates or track it back from an earlier champion, it would be a big help as well. In theory here, all NC winners were the Man, even if it was just an interim title.

Re: 2010 DII Football

Scores from last weekend.....

Friday

Assumption 17
Southern Connecticut 23
- Big plays for SCSU was the difference maker in this matchup.

Saturday

Mercyhurst 10
Gannon 14
- Gannon sneaks by in a big rivalry game.

Northern Michigan 18
Wayne State (Mich.) 26
- Wayne State is victorious in a very hard hitting matchup on the Lodge. Northern's Oline really needs to step it up ASAP if NMU wants to stay in the hunt.

Bentley 14
American International 17
- The Yellowjackets sting the Falcons, and take a win to stay out of the NE-Cellar.

Ferris State 22
Lake Erie 12
- Ferris keeps winning, but could just be Paper Bulldogs.

Saint Anselm 14
Merrimack 52
- The Mack attacks St. A's pretty soundly.

Ohio Dominican 6
Michigan Tech 45
- a small error over at D2F kept this game from being listed on the scoreboard there until today. ODU probably wishes that it still wasn't listed as Tech cruises in a homecoming victory.

New Haven 49
Stonehill 28
- Turnovers are what spoiled things for Stonehill here. New Haven had 21 points off of 3 Stonehill turnovers.

Upper Iowa 12
Bemidji State 51
- Beating the Cocks gets the Beavers wet. *rimshot!* :D

Minnesota-Duluth (1) 56
MSU Moorhead 7
- Duluth rolls as Odim pads his stats for the Harlin Hill Award chase with 5 touchdowns on the day as the Bulldogs slay the Dragons.

Emporia State 17
Nebraska-Omaha 42
- Things seem to be turning around in Omaha. And as it was Homecoming for UNO, all the more sweeter.

St. Cloud 42
Northern State 10
- The Huskies seem bent on making things hard for those that want to drop Football at SCSU.

Dixie State 28
Simon Fraser 21
- Turnovers and other miscues are whats behind the loss here for the Clan. The silver lining?? closest game yet for the Canucks.

Minnesota State 21
Winona State 43
- The Landcows ran into a buzz-saw in Winona. They jumped out to a 3 TD lead, and never looked back at the purple Mavericks.

Re: 2010 DII Football

This weekend games. All times EDT.

Friday Night

7 pm
Merrimack @
Bentley
- if either squad wants to catch Southern Conn. for the league title, they gotta win this game. Bentley isn't totally out of the playoff hunt with three losses that count for the playoffs with one that doesn't, but they would have to win out from here on out to make them.

10pm
Simon Fraser @
British Columbia (CIS)
- The Shrum Bowl. This game doesn't have any impact as far as either programs chances in the playoffs go. And even if it did, it would really only matter to other Members of the GNAC and Canadian West. But don't tell these guys that. One win between the 2 squads, so its purely for bragging rights. Due to this game being played at UBC's Thunderbird Stadium, this game will be played under CIS rules. Next year when the Clan hosts, it will be under NCAA. Should be a wild game.

Saturday

Noon

Michigan Tech @
Saginaw Valley
- Michigan Tech takes its undefeated squad south of the Bridge looking for another important road win for the Huskies. Saginaw Valley looks like their wheels are about to fall off after dropping several games that they should have won. Homecoming crowd here, so best advice here for the Huskies is to jump out early and watch the Cardinal faithful leave after halftime.

1 pm

Pace @
Assumption
- As wide open as what the NE-10 is right now, Pace isn't one of the teams with a shot right now, but Assumption does. The Greyhounds need to have a statement game here with the Setters.

American International @
Saint Anselm
- Ditto for AIC here.

2 pm

Findlay @
Ferris State
- The Bulldogs should continue to impress against the lower end of the GLIAC here. After Findlay however, the Bulldogs diet of Cupcakes is pretty much over.

Mercyhurst @
IUP
- Mercyhurst lost to their crosstown rivals Gannon last week. The best way for them to wash that bad taste out of their mouths is to go beat up on a team that due to being labeled Hostile and Abusive by the PC crowd, they ended up changing their name to a cartoon porn star.

St. Cloud @
Minnesota State
- Homecoming for Mankato, and the traveling Trainers Kit is up for grabs. Both squads here need a win to keep pace behind Duluth if they want any shots at making the playoffs.

Nebraska-Omaha @
Washburn
- The Mavericks have righted the ship at home, but this here is their first road game of the year.

7 pm

Northern Michigan @
Grand Valley (2)
- Northern is again on the road and the Homecoming date for the opponent. Doubtfull that GVSU will be much gentler than what Wayne State was last week. Key to this game is the matchup between NMU's maligned Oline vs. GVSU's depleted Dline.

Wayne State (Mich.) @
Lake Erie
Lake Erie is still looking for that first win, and on paper, Wayne should win this one easily. However, the Storm has put points up on people who weren't totally focused on them. Wayne doesn't need to get caught looking ahead on the schedule here.

Winona State @
Minnesota-Duluth (1)
- Warriors would easily earn a spot in the top 25 poll with a win here, But I'm not sure I see it happening here.

Re: 2010 DII Football

I have a feeling that Tech's first loss will either be this weekend or next, but they will split the SVSU/Hillsdale games.

Re: 2010 DII Football

UBC's Shrum Bowl preview.

Its huge because of the tradition. Its got massive importance to the football community - every year people talk about who won the Shrum Bowl. Also there are recruiting implications. Some people like to promote that NCAA Division II is a better caliber of football, but I dont agree with that at all. This game could go a long way to dispelling that myth that. The Shrum Bowl is massive on many different levels as far as football in B.C. goes. Its a game both teams want to win and both teams are taking seriously.

I know that this game is a big deal between UBC and SFU and throwing barbs at one another is part and parcel of a good clean healthy rivalry. However, you insult D2 here, and you're picking a fight with All of D2 and the USA.

Go Clan!!

Also, a little known fact, BC high schools all play with 4 downs.

Re: 2010 DII Football

Listening to the Shrum bowl right now. I'm pretty sure the bums they pulled in off the street here to call the game are drunk. :D
