2010 DII Football

Great game might be pushing it, it was pretty sloppy, but a tense game with a great ending! Go Dogs! (I always care about the football team:))

Both teams had chances where they could have pulled away from the other team there, but just couldnt excute it. Still, gotta love the drama of a field goal to win the game right at the end of it. Only way that kick would have been better was if DSU was up by one or two instead of the teams being tied up.

Re: 2010 DII Football

Great job Dogs! To win without Odim, Winfield, etc. is really an accomplishment.

Nebraska-Omaha announces that they moving up to D1 and are going to cut football and wressling, effective immediately. Never mind the fact that yesterday UNO won the D2 National Championship in wrestling for the third year running. Really nice Alberts.

The thing with that though, is that even with cutting Football and Wrestling, they're still going to be barely breaking even right now with a move up to D1. And they did just crap on a lot of donors in the Omaha area. I believe UNO just had a pretty nice scoreboard installed a year or two ago at their football field. I can't imagine the local boosters that made that gift happen are going to be thrilled about this at all. Plus, hell, they dropped a program hours after they just won a national championship. Thats just bad PR right there. All this just to go to the Summit League?? Eh, if you're going to be a good D1 school, you would get plenty of other offers soon enough. Summit just wants them to fill a scheduling hole.

Re: 2010 DII Football

Just curious, if they are dropping football and wrestling, are they dropping a bunch of womens' sports also? Usually there's a lot of womens sports that balance out the large number of guys playing football, so it makes you wonder how their sports balance will be after this.

Also, you especially hate to see successful programs like this wrestling program cut.

They're adding men's soccer and golf and upping baseball.

Huh. Those don't seem like they'd produce much revenue, but I guess football and wrestling must be bigger revenue losers if what they are doing makes sense. But I suppose the assumed formula where football makes money and supports a bunch of other sports doesn't always play out at every school.

I saw somewere that said that Maverick Football was losing about a million a year, but I would wager that the players paid to be in school wasn't included in that figure. In D2, they can only give the kids the equilent of 36 scholorships, so most kids get maybe an eigth or a quarter scholorship. They would have to pay UNO the rest to attend school. Thats why you tend to see really big teams at Private schools, as they can offer a lot of kids the chance to come play football for basically book money, and then have them come up with the rest of the cash to attend school.
